Those of you who face content on your computer every day will want to know some basic shortcuts to increase efficiency. Paste, for example, is one of the most important shortcuts for the copy process. These shortcuts are available on almost all operating systems and programs. See Step 1 below to find out how.

Step 1. Copy something to the clipboard

To paste, you have to copy something first. You can copy almost anything on your computer, from text to images to files and folders. You can also use keyboard shortcuts to copy: Ctrl+C in Windows and Linux or Command+C on Mac OS X. Copying will leave the content in its original location and create a new copy in the new location.

You can cut instead of copying, which will remove content from its original location to be pasted in the new location. The keyboard shortcut for cropping is Ctrl+X in Windows and Linux and Command+X in Mac OS X.

Step 2. Navigate to where you want to paste

When pasting with the keyboard, the content will be inserted wherever the cursor is active. If you are pasting text, make sure the cursor is in the right place in the document. If you are pasting the file, make sure that the correct window is open and active.

Step 3. Paste the content

Once the cursor is in the right place, press the keyboard shortcut to paste the content: Ctrl+V or Shift+Insert in Windows and Linux or Command+V in Mac OS X. The content will appear where your cursor is, or at the end of your current directory if you copy files.
