Have you ever wanted to own and play drums, but felt the price of this instrument was too expensive to buy? Or maybe you want to add to your collection of percussion instruments at a low cost. Whatever the reason, homemade drums are easy and fun to make from a variety of materials.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Cardboard
Step 1. Prepare your equipment
For this method, you will need an empty cylindrical container, duct tape, cardboard, colored pencils or crayons (optional), two pencils (optional), and tissue (optional).
For the container, you can use an old coffee container, a can of popcorn, or an aluminum can. This container will be the frame of the drum, so look for a clean and nice container
Step 2. Tape the duct tape across the top of the container until it's completely covered with duct tape
This section will form the top of the drum, which should be firm and strong.
Try to glue a coat or two of duct tape to the top of the can, and cross them tightly to make the drum last longer
Step 3. Measure the cardboard by wrapping it around the can
Then, cut the cardboard so that it fits the size of the can. Glue the cardboard in place, and cut off the remaining paper.
Step 4. Decorate the drums
Or, let your child decorate it with markers, crayons, or paint.
You can also cut the cardboard into a specific shape and attach it to the side of the drum
Step 5. Make a pair of drum beaters
Clump a piece of tissue at the end of a pencil. Wrap the duct tape around the tissue clump so that it sticks with the pencil.
Repeat this step on the other pencil
Step 6. Try your drums
Now is the time to have fun with your drums or let your toddler play them to make sure your drums last the whole time.
Method 2 of 3: Using Balloons
Step 1. Prepare your equipment
For this method, you'll need a clean, round container, such as an old coffee or formula can, a balloon, duct tape, and a rubber band (optional).
Step 2. Spread the balloon around the can
Use your fingers to open and stretch the balloon so that it fits into the top of the can.
Step 3. Place the other balloon flat on a hard surface
Don't blow it, you need to use balloon pieces. Using scissors, make small holes in the balloon. The size of these holes does not have to be uniform or perfect, because these holes serve more as decoration.
Step 4. Spread the balloon you cut out over the balloon already in the can
Adding two layers of balloons will make the drum more durable, and the hole in the top will make a pretty decoration.
Step 5. Glue duct tape around the can to keep the balloon in position
You can also use a rubber band and wrap it around the can to keep the balloons glued together.
Step 6. Try your drums
Or give it to your child and let them try it for you.
- If you want to weight the drum, you can fill the can with a little rice or dry beans before stretching the balloon on top.
- Make a drum bat out of pencil and tissue, or use your hands to beat the drum to your favorite song.
Method 3 of 3: Using Fake Skin
Step 1. Prepare your equipment
For this method, you will need a round container or can, a roll of faux leather, a roll of thin string, a marker, and scissors.
Step 2. Place the can on the back of the skin
Using a marker, mark around the can. Then, flip the can, and draw again.
These circles will form the bottom and top of the drum
Step 3. Cut the circle, leaving a 5 cm gap between the drawn line and your cut
This distance will be the width of the leather to which the rope will be tied.
Step 4. Use scissors to make small incisions around the outside of the two leather sheets
This wedge will be used to attach the strings that surround the drum.
Step 5. Insert the rope into the hole
Once you've threaded the string through the holes in the top and bottom leather sheets, tie it in a small knot, and cut off the rest.
Step 6. Place the peel sheet on both sides of the can
Then, tie the rope from top to bottom using the rope that has been inserted into the leather sheet, tightening as you tie it.
Step 7. Try your drums
These drums not only have to look good, they have to sound good.
