This wikiHow teaches you how to import images from other files into Photoshop for Windows or macOS.

Method 1 of 2: Importing from Another File Format
Step 1. Open Photoshop on PC or Mac
Open area All Apps on the “Start” menu in Windows, and the Applications folder in macOS.
Step 2. Open the file you want to work with
To do so, click menu File, choose Open, then double click the file.
To create a new file, press Ctrl+N, file name, then click OK.
Step 3. Click the “New Layer” icon
It's in the lower-right corner of the "Layers" panel. This icon is shaped like a square sheet of paper with inverted corners. Click the icon to create a new layer.
Step 4. Click the File menu
It's in the upper-left corner of the screen.
Step 5. Click Place…
It's near the middle of the menu. The computer's file browser will open.
In some versions of Photoshop, the name is Place Embedded.
Step 6. Select the images you want to import, then click Place
Step 7. Click the check mark
It's at the top of the screen. Now, the image will be opened in a new layer.
Method 2 of 2: Importing from “Open File”
Step 1. Open Photoshop on PC or Mac
Open area All Apps on the “Start” menu in Windows, and the Applications folder in macOS.
Step 2. Open the file you want to work with
To do so, click menu File, choose Open, then double click the file.
To create a new file, press Ctrl+N, file name, then click OK.
Step 3. Open the file containing the image you want to import
Click again menu File, choose Open, then double-click the second file.
Each open image now forms a tab at the top of Photoshop
Step 4. Click the tab of the image you want to import
Step 5. Click the layer containing the image in the “Layers” panel
Now this layer is selected.
Step 6. Click “Select Tool”
This is the first button on the toolbar on the left side of the screen. The icon is like a cursor with a crosshairs.
Step 7. Drag the image to another tab
Click and drag the selected image, then drag it to another tab at the top of Photoshop. When you lift your finger off the mouse, the image will be imported as a new layer.
