This wikiHow teaches you how to import and add three-dimensional models and objects from a saved file to a project in Blender on your computer. You can import a wide variety of file formats into a Blender project, or add a single object from a blend file.

Method 1 of 2: Importing Files
Step 1. Open Blender on the computer
The Blender icon looks like a blue dot inside an orange circle with three arms. You can find it in the “Start” menu on Windows, or the “Applications” folder on a Mac.
Step 2. Click the File menu in the top left corner of the screen
You can find this button on the Blender menu bar in the upper-left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will open afterwards.
Step 3. Hover over the Import option in the menu
A submenu will appear with a list of compatible file formats.
Step 4. Select the file format you want to import
A Blender file browsing window will appear and you can select the files that need to be imported. The following formats are supported:
- Collada (.dae) – This is Blender's primary format.
- Alembic (.abc)
- FBX (.fbx)
- Motion Capture (.bvh)
- Stanford (.ply)
- Wavefront (.obj)
- X3D Extensible 3D (.x3d/.wrl)
- stl (.stl)
- Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg)
- glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf)
Step 5. Locate and select the file you want to import
Use Blender's file browsing pane to locate the file, then click its name.
Step 6. Click the Import button
It's a blue button in the lower-right corner of the Blender navigation window. The selected file will be directly imported and opened in Blender.
If you don't see the object, try zooming in. Sometimes, imported objects are rendered very small and need to be enlarged
Method 2 of 2: Importing Objects Separately from Other Blender Files
Step 1. Open Blender on the computer
The Blender icon looks like a blue dot inside an orange circle with three arms. You can find it in the “Start” menu on Windows, or the “Applications” folder on a Mac.
Step 2. Click the File menu
It's in the menu bar in the upper-left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear after that.
Step 3. Click Append on the “File” menu
A new menu pane will open and you can browse the files on your computer to select the objects you need to import.
Alternatively, press the shortcut Shift+F1 on the keyboard. This shortcut will open the “Append” menu
Step 4. Find and click the Blender file with the object you want to import
Use the file navigation pane of the “Append” window to locate the Blender (.blend) file, then click on the file to view its components.
Step 5. Click Append
It's a blue button in the lower-right corner of the Blender navigation window. A new set of folders containing various Blender file components or scenes will appear.
Step 6. Click the folder containing the object you want to import
Most object meshes can be found in the " Object " folder. The folders below contain the following objects:

” Armature :
This folder contains the armatures used to create animated characters and models.

” Brushes :
This folder contains the various customization brushes used in the Blender files.

” Cameras :
This folder contains all the cameras used in the scene in the Scene file.

” Freestylelinestyle”:
This folder contains line data for the “Freestyle” engine.

” Images :
This folder contains the images used in the scene in the Blender file. These images include images of the world (eg the sky), as well as refractive and ultraviolet texture images.

This folder contains all the light effects used in the Blender file.

” Material :
This folder contains material objects. Material determines the basic color of the object, as well as the way or form of light reflection on the object.

” Mesh :
This folder contains the geometry of the three-dimensional object in the Blender file.
- ” Objects”:" This folder contains the three-dimensional objects in the scene. You can access this folder to import most of the objects in the file.

” Scenes :
This folder contains scene data in Blender files.

” Textures :
This folder contains the customized textures that are applied to objects in the Blender file.

” World :
This folder contains world data in Blender files.
Step 7. Select the object you want to import
Click the object name in the “Append” window to select it.
You can hold down the " Shift " or " Ctrl " (on a Mac," Command ") and select multiple objects at once.
Step 8. Click the Append button
It's a blue button in the lower-right corner of the screen. The selected objects will be imported into a new Blender file.
