This wikiHow teaches you how to turn off the autocorrect feature on smartphones, tablets, and computers. This feature is a standard typing feature installed on most operating systems and platforms. By disabling it, your computer or mobile device will not automatically convert misspellings to the closest correct spelling.

Method 1 of 4: On iPhone or iPad
Step 1. Open the iPhone or iPad settings menu
(“Settings”).
Tap the “Settings” app icon which looks like a set of gears in a gray box.
Step 2. Swipe screen and touch option
"General".
This option is at the top of the “Settings” page.
Step 3. Swipe the screen and touch Keyboard
It's in the middle of the “General” page.
Step 4. Touch the green "Auto-Correction" switch
The switch color will change to gray
indicating that the autocorrect feature has been disabled on your iPhone or iPad.
- If the " Auto-Correction " switch is already grayed out, this feature is already turned off.
- You may also need to turn off "Check Spelling" by tapping the green toggle next to the title.
Method 2 of 4: On Android Device
Step 1. Open the device settings menu (“Settings”)
Swipe down from the top of the screen to display the notification bar, then tap the settings gear icon (“Settings”)
in the top right corner of the menu.
Step 2. Swipe the screen and touch System
This option is at the bottom of the settings menu.
On a Samsung Galaxy device, swipe up and tap “ General management ”.
Step 3. Touch Languages & input
It's at the top of the page.
Step 4. Touch Virtual keyboard
It's in the middle of the page.
Touch the option “ On-screen keyboard ” if you are using a Samsung Galaxy smartphone or tablet.
Step 5. Select the device keyboard
Touch the keyboard that is automatically installed on the device.
- For example, Samsung Galaxy users need to touch the “ Samsung Keyboard ”.
- If you are using Gboard, touch the option “ Gboard ”.
Step 6. Touch Text correction
It's in the center of the screen.
On a Samsung Galaxy device, touch the option “ Smart typing ” (if you select Gboard, you need to touch “ Text correction ”).
Step 7. Touch the bluish green " Auto-correction " switch
The switch color will change to gray
which indicates that the autocorrect feature on the device is no longer enabled.
- If the switch is already grayed out, the autocorrect feature has been disabled on the Android device. While still in this menu, you can also disable the "Show correction suggestions" feature.
- On the main Samsung Galaxy keyboard, tap the blue " Predictive text " switch.
Method 3 of 4: On Windows Computer
Step 1. Open the “Start” menu
Click the Windows logo in the lower-left corner of the screen.
Step 2. Open “Settings”
Click the gear icon in the lower-left corner of the Start menu. The settings window (“Settings”) will be displayed.
Step 3. Click Devices
It's in the middle of the “Settings” window.
Step 4. Click the Typing tab
This tab is on the left side of the “Devices” window.
Step 5. Look for the "Autocorrect misspelled words" heading
Usually, you can see the title of this segment at the top of the window.
Step 6. Click the "On" switch
This switch is under the " Autocorrect misspelled words " heading. Once clicked, the switch will be turned off
indicating that the autocorrect feature is no longer enabled on the computer.
- If the switch is marked with an " Off " label next to it, the autocorrect feature is no longer enabled on the computer.
- You also need to disable the "Highlight misspelled words" feature in this menu by clicking the "On" switch for that feature.
Method 4 of 4: On Mac Computer
Step 1. Open Apple menu
Click the Apple logo in the upper-left corner of the screen. A drop-down menu will appear after that.
Step 2. Click System Preferences…
This option is in the drop-down menu. Once clicked, the “System Preferences” window will be opened.
Step 3. Click Keyboard
This option is in the “System Preferences” window. The “Keyboard” window will be displayed after that.
Step 4. Click the Text tab
This tab is at the top of the “Keyboard” window.
Step 5. Uncheck the "Correct spelling automatically" box
It's in the upper-right corner of the window. After that, the autocorrect feature will be turned off on Mac computers.
