This wikiHow teaches you how to build a mob spawner, a trap for enemies in Minecraft that allows you to collect objects they drop after death. If you prefer to build an apparatus that lets you spawn swarms of enemies on command, try making a dispenser in Creative Mode.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Preparation Stage
Step 1. Consider using Creative Mode when building a mob spawner
Since mob spawners are resource-intensive and quite dangerous to build without a "safety net", it's best to create one in Creative Mode, then switch the game to Survival to enjoy its benefits.
Creating a game in Creative mode, then switching it to Survival mode will disable in-game achievements
Step 2. Understand how the mob spawner works
By building the platform high enough, you can create a surface where enemies will appear. These enemies will eventually find a channel entrance in the middle of the platform; upon entering this channel, enemies will fall to their death, landing in a set of inverted cone-shaped funnels or pyramids called hoppers at the bottom of the channel. This funnel will channel the items dropped by the enemy into the chest it is connected to, which you can check later if needed.
Step 3. Make sure you're in the right biome for the enemy you want to trap
If you want to trap a certain type of enemy (such as a mage), you will need to be in the exact location of the related enemy (for example, wizards usually appear near water).
Step 4. Find a flat place to build the mob spawner
So that you don't have to change the nature of the area, it's a good idea to find a flat, level surface as a mob spawner location.
Step 5. Gather the required equipment
You will need to find or create the following objects:
- 12 piles of stones/ cobblestone (768 cobblestones in total)
- 8 buckets of water
- 4 funnels
- 4 small chests
Method 2 of 4: Building a Mob Spawner Tower
Step 1. Create the tower
Each side of the tower must be two blocks wide and 28 blocks high. You will build a tower that is 28 blocks high with a 2x2 space in the middle.
Step 2. Make branches on each side of the tower
Add 7 blocks to the two blocks on each side of the spire. Thus, you make 4 branches with a total length of 8 blocks that lead out of the center hole of the tower.
Step 3. Create a wall around each branch
Each branch will need a wall two blocks high around it to keep enemies from jumping out after falling in.
Step 4. Fill in the area between the branches
To increase the surface area where enemies will appear, add cobblestone between each branch to create a large, rectangular platform.
The cobblestone used here should be placed at the height of the top of the wall built around the branch
Step 5. Create a wall around the entire top of the mob spawner
This wall must be two blocks high to prevent enemies from escaping the mob spawner.
You can also use a fence for this step
Step 6. Add water to each end of the branch
Select a bucket of water in your inventory, then select every two blocks at the farthest end of each branch. This move results in a stream of water from one end of each branch towards the center of the mob spawner, stopping just before reaching the center hole.
The maximum distance that one block of water flows on flat ground before stopping is 8 blocks
Method 3 of 4: Building a Mob Spawner Basement
Step 1. Create a channel
Dig a 2x2 hole 6 blocks deep in the inner base of the tower. You'll need to make a hole deep enough at the base of the tower so that enemies that appear at the top of the tower and fall into it will be channeled into this hole.
Step 2. Make 4 funnels into the bottom of the hole
Select a stack of hoppers on the equip bar, then select every four blocks at the bottom of the channel.
Step 3. Remove one block from each base of the funnel
This will keep the funnel suspended in mid-air.
Step 4. Place the crate under the funnel
Select a chest in your equip bar, then select every 4 empty blocks under the funnel. Thus, you will create two large chests under the funnel.
Step 5. Create a basement that is accessible from the surface level
This step will vary somewhat depending on the topography of your world, but usually you'll need to build a ladder to get back to the surface; Since you are using two large chests, you will need to repeat this step on the opposite side of the basement.
When defending the basement, make sure you have a sword. This way, you can kill all the enemies that are still alive after you fall
Step 6. Wait for the enemies to appear
It usually takes up to a full day (day and night) before enemies start appearing; when you do, your funnel chest will start to fill up with items dropped by enemies when you die.
Method 4 of 4: Using the Dispenser in Creative Mode
Step 1. Understand how this method works
If you play in Creative Mode, you can build a simple apparatus that spawns enemies depending on the various mob spawn commands (commonly referred to as " eggs " in games) placed in the apparatus.
This method is not available in Survival Mode, and will not automatically spawn enemies; This method is best used for creating arena-style traps
Step 2. Put the necessary items in the inventory
Add the following items to the equip bar via your creative menu:
- 1 lever
- 3 redstone dust
- 1 dispenser
- 1 stack (of 64) desired mob spawn eggs (you can add 2 or more stacks if you want to randomize your mob spawner)
Step 3. Place the dispenser on the ground
Select the dispenser in the equip bar, then select the location where you want to place the dispenser.
Step 4. Place the redstone dust in a line behind the dispenser
Now you have a row of redstone moving away from the dispenser.
Step 5. Install the lever at the end of the redstone row
Placing a lever at the end of a redstone row allows you to turn redstone on and off.
At this point, you can test the lever by selecting it; if the redstone dust illuminates when selecting the lever, it means the system is working and you can turn it off again
Step 6. Select a dispenser
To do this, tap, right-click, or press the left trigger button on the dispenser. This step will open the dispenser inventory.
Step 7. Put the mob spawn egg into the dispenser
Move one or more eggs that you want to use to spawn enemies to the inventory dispenser.
Step 8. Close the dispenser
Your dispenser is now ready to spawn enemies.
Step 9. Select the lever twice
This will turn on the dispenser, which will then spawn an enemy from one of your eggs, before turning the dispenser off again.
- You can repeat this process to spawn another enemy.
- If you have more than one type of mob spawn egg in the dispenser, the enemies that spawn will be randomized.
Tips
- Enemies cannot survive falling from the height of the tower, but can survive if there are enough "corpses" piled up in the channel.
- Build your mob spawner from obsidian or bedrock. That way, the mob spawner won't be damaged if you spawn a Creeper and make it explode.
- While mob spawners can still be created in Survival Mode, they are quite challenging. If you decide to create a mob spawner in Survival mode, make sure you're near the bed in case it dies.
Warning
- If you spawn Endermen, these enemies can start dismantling your mob spawner.
- Creepers can explode and destroy mob spawners, so build using obsidian or bedrock.
