This dark purple-black block is impervious to all explosions, except for the molt "blue skull" attack. Obsidian is very useful for creating explosion-proof shelters to protect you from attacks by creepers or other players. Obsidian is also used in several recipes, including for making enchantment tables. Unlike most items in Minecraft, you can't make obsidian through the crafting table, and this material is naturally hard to find too. Instead, you can make it by pouring water on the lava.
Step
Method 1 of 4: Making Obsidian without a Diamond Pickaxe
Step 1. Look for the lava pool
There is no recipe for obsidian. On the other hand, when flowing water hits a stationary lava "source" block, it turns into obsidian. Stationary lava can be found in the following places:
- Lava in the form of "waterfalls" is easy to find in ravines and caves, but only the block at the top is the source block.
- Lava is usually found in the lower 10 layers of the map. Dig diagonally so you don't fall into it.
- Although rare, you can also find lava lakes on the surface, but never more than 20 blocks above sea level.
- Some villages have blacksmith workshops that have two lava blocks that can be seen from the outside.
Step 2. Collect lava using a bucket
Make a bucket of three iron ingots. Use the bucket to pick up the lava. You can only pick up stationary lava blocks, not flowing lava.
In the computer crafting system, arrange the iron in a "V" shape
Step 3. Dig the hole you want to use to make obsidian
Make sure the hole can accommodate lava and that there are no flammable objects within two blocks of any direction. Wood, tall grass, and many other objects can catch fire if they are near the lava.
Step 4. Pour the lava into the hole
Remember that obsidian can only be obtained from stationary (not flowing) lava. This means you need a bucket of lava to make a block of obsidian.
Keep in mind that without using a diamond pickaxe you cannot mine obsidian without destroying it. Make sure your obsidian brewery is in the right location before proceeding
Step 5. Pour water on the lava
Use an empty bucket to fetch water. Take the water to the lava pool you created and pour the water into the lava. Lava will turn into obsidian when in contact with running water.
It's a good idea to construct a temporary non-combustible structure around the lava pool to prevent the lava from escaping
Method 2 of 4: Turning a Lava Pool into Obsidian with a Diamond Pickaxe
Step 1. Get a diamond pickaxe
Obsidian is the only block that must be mined with a diamond pickaxe. Obsidian will be destroyed if you try to mine it with other, lower quality tools.
Step 2. Look for the lava pool
Dig almost to the bottom of the map and explore. It won't take you long to find a large lava pool. You can turn an entire pool into obsidian at once because you have a diamond pickaxe. So, you don't need to transport the lava using a bucket.
Step 3. Fence the area
Make a small wall on one side of the pool, leaving room for a water block. This can prevent you from being pushed by the water and falling into the lava.
Step 4. Pour water on the lava
Place the water block in the fenced area, one level higher than the lava. The water will flow down and turn the surface of the lava lake into obsidian.
Step 5. Test the obsidian edges
Stand by the lake and dig up the obsidian a block deep. It is possible that there is another layer of lava underneath. If you're not careful, you could fall into the lava, or your obsidian block could collapse and burn before you can catch it.
Step 6. Run the water to where you are mining
. If there is lava under obsidian, stand by the water and mine obsidian from the edges. The water must flow quickly when you are mining. Turning the next layer into obsidian before the lava turns can do some damage. Continue to mine as much obsidian as needed while draining water if needed.
Method 3 of 4: Creating a Nether Portal
Step 1. Collect 20 obsidian the other way
You need 10 obsidian to make one Nether portal. However, if you already have enough obsidian to create two portals, you can use a trick to get endless obsidian without having to search for lava.
Step 2. Create a Nether portal
If you don't have a portal yet, place the obsidian blocks vertically 5 blocks high and 4 blocks wide. Activate the portal with chert (flint) and steel in the lowest obsidian block. Maybe this trick will not work if there are other portals nearby.
In the corner of the portal should not be given obsidian
Step 3. Travel through the Nether
The Nether is a dangerous place so you should prepare yourself if you've never been there before. You'll need the remaining 10 obsidian blocks, but it's best to leave them somewhere safe and explore a safe route first. You must travel both straight and horizontally within a certain minimum distance (this distance includes 3 safety limit blocks just in case):
- "Spacious" world on PC, Pocket Edition, and Console Edition: travel 19 blocks.
- The "medium" world in Console Edition: travel 25 blocks.
- "Classic" worlds in Console Edition (including all worlds on PS3 and Xbox 360): travel 45 blocks.
- If you have multiple Overworld portals, walk from the coordinates of those portals. This trick will not work if you are too close to an existing portal.
Step 4. Create a second portal
Build this portal in the Nether and activate it in the same way as the first portal. If you walk past it, you will appear in a new portal within the Overworld.
If you appear near a portal you created, it means you haven't walked far enough in the Nether. Return to the Nether and destroy your portal with the diamond pickaxe, then create a new one elsewhere
Step 5. Mine obsidian in the Overworld portal
The portal that just appeared has 14 obsidian blocks that can be picked up for free. The obsidian mine uses a diamond pickaxe.
Step 6. Exit the same Nether portal to spawn a new portal
Every time you walk through your newly created Nether portal, a new portal will appear in the Overworld. Mine here for free obsidian. Speed up your mining to get massive amounts of obsidian:
- Use the pedestal to have your spawn appear near the permanent Overworld portal.
- Place a chest near the temporary Overworld portal. Store the obsidian and diamond pickaxe in the chest after you mine the portal.
- Kill your character to spawn again.
- Walk back through the Nether and exit the same portal to create a new one. Make tunnels between the Nether portals for added security.
Method 4 of 4: Mining in End
Step 1. Look for the End portal
The End Portal leads to the final, most challenging area in Minecraft. You have to do a long quest and involve many Eyes of Ender to find and activate it. Only do this when you're ready to face the scary Ender Dragon.
If you are using Pocket Edition, Portal End can only work in unlimited worlds (not "Old") running on version 1.0 or later (released in December 2016)
Step 2. Mine the End platform
As you travel through the End portal, a platform containing 25 obsidian blocks will appear under your feet. Mine the obsidian with a diamond pickaxe (although you may have to kill the annoying dragon first).
Step 3. Mine the obsidian pillar
The island inhabited by the Ender Dragon has several tall towers with purple crystals on top. The entire tower is made of obsidian.
Step 4. Go back through the same End portal
You can return to the Overworld by killing your character, or by defeating the Ender Dragon and walking through the exit portal that appears. If you walk through the End portal, platforms containing 25 obsidian blocks will respawn. This is one of the fastest ways to get obsidian because it's always in stock.
The obsidian pillars won't spawn again if you don't re-spawn the dragons. To re-spawn the dragon, place 4 Ender crystals at the top of the exit portal that appears when the dragon dies
Tips
- You'll need obsidian to make a magic table, beacon, or Ender chest. Once you have obsidian, magic a diamond pickaxe so you can mine faster.
- If you're using the bucket method (pouring water on the lava), make sure the main material for your lava pool is source block. Otherwise, the lava will turn into cobblestone or rock when you pour water over it.
- If you're lucky, you can find obsidian in chests belonging to NPC villagers.
