You can unlock tons of characters in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 8. Plus, you can also unlock new Grand Prix Cups as well as old Grand Prix Cups from other Mario Kart games that have been released. This wikiHow teaches you how to unlock these characters and the Grand Prix Cup.

Method 1 of 2: Unlocking Cups and Characters in Mario Kart Wii
Step 1. Use this guide to unlock Cups and characters in Mario Kart Wii which was released in 2008
If you're looking for a guide to the Mario Kart game for Wii U that was released in 2014, check out the method that discusses Mario Kart 8 below. Note that you can play Mario Kart Wii on the Wii U console
Step 2. Unlock Cups by ranking 3, 2, or 1 in the available Cups
- Each Grand Prix Cup can be unlocked by getting a trophy (Trophy) bronze (Bronze), silver (Silver), or gold (Gold) in the Cup available at the beginning of the game. The type of Engine Class (50 cc, 100 cc, etc.) used by you will not be a problem. Here's a list of the Cups that can be unlocked and also how to unlock them:
- Star Cup: Get a rank of 3, 2, or 1 in the Mushroom Cup and Flower Cup.
- Special Cup: Get a rank of 3, 2, or 1 in the Star Cup.
- Leaf Cup: Get a rank of 3, 2, or 1 in the Banana Cup and Shell Cup.
- Lightning Cup: Get a rank of 3, 2, or 1 in the Leaf Cup.
- You can also open " Mirror Mode " for the entire Cup. This mode makes the trajectory reversed. You can unlock this mode by getting 1st in all Cups in 150 cc races. Be prepared because this mode is a little difficult to unlock.
Step 3. Unlock characters by winning 50 cc races
- Note that the difficulty (Difficulty) of racing in Mario Kart is determined by the type of Engine Class. There are three Engine Classes in Mario Kart Wii: 50 cc (easiest difficulty), 100 cc (medium difficulty), and 150 cc (most difficult). Here are the characters that can be unlocked by winning 50 cc races:
- King Boo: Win the 50cc race in the Star Cup.
- Diddy Kong: Win a 50cc race in the Lightning Cup.
- Baby Daisy: Earn one or more Stars in 50cc races in Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, Star Cup and Special Cup.
Step 4. Unlock characters by winning 100 cc races
- Unlock the following characters by playing the game on this more difficult difficulty:
- Dry Bones (Koopa skeleton): Win a 100 cc race in the Leaf Cup.
- Mii Outfit A: Win the 100 cc race in the Special Cup.

Bowser Jr.
: Earn one or more Stars in 100 cc races in Retro Cup, namely Shell Cup, Banana Cup, Leaf Cup and Lightning Cup.
Step 5. Unlock characters by winning 150 cc races
- Show off your skills by unlocking the following characters on this most difficult difficulty:
- Daisy: Win the 150 cc race in the Special Cup.
- Dry Browser (Browser framework): Earn one or more Stars in 150cc races in Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, Star Cup and Special Cup.
Step 6. Unlock characters by playing Time Trial
- In Time Trial mode, you race with only one Staff Ghost (a racer who is semi-transparent so he looks like a ghost) who cannot be hit or attacked. To win the race in this mode, you have to beat the racer. If you manage to beat the racer in a large enough time interval (sometimes two seconds or more), you will get an announcement that you have successfully unlocked the "Expert Staff Ghost" racer. The racer has the same function as the Ghost Staff. However, these racers are more difficult to beat. You don't have to beat the racer to unlock the character. However, if you manage to unlock a large number of these racers by defeating the Staff Ghost, you can unlock the following characters:

Funky Kong:
Unlock four Expert Staff Ghosts.

Baby Luigi:
Unlock eight Expert Staff Ghosts.

Birdo:
Unlock sixteen Expert Staff Ghosts or play online races and beat 250 players.

Toadette:
Play the entire Time Trial track. There are 32 tracks in total. You don't have to win races on all of the Time Trial tracks to unlock this character.

Mii Outfit B (Mario or Peach Outfit):
Unlock all Expert Staff Ghosts. You must unlock 32 Expert Staff Ghosts to unlock this character. The character has the same Stats as the Mii character which is unlocked by winning the 100 cc race in the Special Cup. Instead of wearing the normal Mii outfit, these Mii characters will wear Mario (if your Mii character is male) or Peach (if your Mii character is female) outfit.
Step 7. Open Rosalina.
- Rosalina is a character from the Super Mario Galaxy game. There are two ways to unlock this character. Do one of the following two ways:
- Get 1st in 150cc races across the Cup to unlock Mirror Mode. After that, get one Star in Mirror Mode races for all Cups.
- Install Super Mario Galaxy on your Wii. After that, start the game and save the game data (Save Game). Then play any race on Mario Kart Wii until Rosalina appears.
Step 8. Learn more complicated strategies to unlock hard-to-unlock characters
- Whether playing the Time Trial mode or the 150 cc track, knowing complex strategies can help you unlock Cups and characters faster. Try following these tips:
- Use Heavyweight type vehicles to race Time Trial mode because these vehicles have the highest Speed. Acceleration is not really needed if there are no opponents bothering you.
- Look for hidden shortcuts. The track in Mario Kart Wii has a lot of shortcuts. For example, you can take shortcuts by racing through dirt roads in Maple Treeway and passages under mine carts in Wario's Goldmine. If you're having trouble winning races on certain tracks, look for videos on the internet that provide tips for racing on those tracks. You may also find out a new shortcut.
Method 2 of 2: Unlocking Cups and Characters in Mario Kart 8
Step 1. Use this guide to unlock Cups and characters in Mario Kart 8 released for Wii U

Step 2. Unlock characters by getting 1st rank in Grand Prix Cups
- If you rank 1 on all passes in the Cup (not just on one track), you will unlock a new character that is randomly selected from the list of characters that have not been unlocked. Winning the same Cup more than once will not unlock new characters. However, winning the same Cup using a different Engine Class can unlock new characters. For example, winning a 50 cc race in the Mushroom Cup and a 100 cc race in the Mushroom Cup will unlock two new characters. The following characters can be unlocked using this method:
- Metal Mario
- Toadette
- Lakitu
- Rosalina
- Baby Rosalina
- Pink Gold Peach
- Iggy Koopa
- Roy Koopa
- Ludwig von Koopa
- Lemmy Koopa
- Larry Koopa
- Morton Koopa Jr
- Wendy O. Koopa
Step 3. Open the Mii character
Mii are special characters that can be unlocked in Mario Kart. The character's vehicle type is determined by the weight and height of your Mii Avatar. There are many rumors floating around the internet about how to unlock Mii. However, it is very likely that this character can be unlocked by winning the Cup
Step 4. Open a new Cup
- Unlock new Grand Prix Cups by ranking 1 in the available Cups. Each Cup consists of four tracks. Once the Cup is open, you can play it using any Engine Class. When you win all Cups, you can unlock special modes. The flow of the opening of the Cup can be broken down into the following chart:
- Mushroom Cup → Flower Cup → Star Cup → Special Cup
- Shell Cup → Banana Cup → Leaf Cup → Lightning Cup
- Win all Cups using a 150 cc Engine Class to unlock Mirror Mode for all Cups. This mode makes the track path reversed.
Step 5. Purchase additional characters and Cups
- Connect your Wii U to the internet and buy DLC (Downloadable Content) to get extra Cups and characters. For now there are two DLC that can be purchased:

DLC Pack 1 contains the following additional characters and Cups:
- Characters: Tanooki Mario, Link, and Cat Peach
- Cup: Egg Cup and Triforce Cup

DLC Pack 2 contains the following additional characters and Cups:
- Characters: Isabelle, Dry Bowser, and Villager (from the game Animal Crossing)

Tips
There are no cheat codes that can be used in Mario Kart Wii or Mario Kart 8
Warning
- If the desired character is not listed in this guide, the character is not playable in the game. Don't believe the rumors about the "Mii Outfit C" or the fake secret characters that are floating around the internet.
- Do not select the Quit Game option if you are playing a special mode. Instead, turn off your Wii and play another Grand Prix Cup.
