iOS has an excellent text-to-speech option that lets your phone read text on the screen aloud in multiple languages and accents. If you are using iOS 8 or later, you can enable Speak Screen so that your e-book you are reading can change pages automatically.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Enabling Text to Speech
Step 1. Open "Settings"
Step 2. Tap on "General"
Step 3. Tap "Accessibility"
Step 4. Tap "Speech"
Step 5. Turn on "Speak Selection"
This way your device can read aloud only the texts you select.
Step 6. Turn on "Speak Screen" (iOS 8 and above)
Your device will be able to read aloud the texts that appear on the screen.
Step 7. Select a sound (optional)
If you want the text to be read aloud in a specific accent and language, tap the "Voices" option to select.
Note: Sound files will be downloaded to your phone if you add different sounds. Some sound files, such as Alex's, can take up a significant amount of your storage space
Step 8. Change the speaking speed using the toggle button
Speech speed regulates how quickly words are read to you. Slide the button to the image of the rabbit to be faster and to the image of the tortoise to be slower.
Step 9. Turn text highlighting on or off (optional)
If you turn it on, your device can highlight the words being read.
Part 2 of 3: Using Speak Selection
Step 1. Press and hold the text you want to read aloud
Use the bars found in each corner of the selection to adjust which words are selected.
Step 2. Tap the "Speak" button on the pop-up menu
If you can't see the "Speak" button, tap the right arrow at the edge of the pop-up menu to bring it up.
Step 3. Select an emoji to read the description aloud
Apart from being able to read words, your device is also capable of describing emoji. Highlight the emoji you want to describe then tap "Speak".
Part 3 of 3: Using Speak Screen (iOS 8 and Up)
Step 1. Swipe your two fingers over the screen from top to bottom
It's a good idea to spread your fingers apart as you do this.
Speak screen can also be run with the Siri application, you just say "speak the screen"
Step 2. Use the on-screen menu to adjust the reading
You can pause, play, back up files, speed up, and also change the speaking speed.
Speak screen will not work if the screen does not display written content. For example, you run Speak Screen when you display the main screen, Speak Screen will not read out the names of your apps
Step 3. Press "X" to stop Speak Screen
Press the "<" key to continue reading the text on the screen.
Step 4. Enable Speak Screen in Safari using the Reader button
When using Safari on iOS 8, you'll see a small button to the left of the address bar that will open the Speak Screen menu. This method is more effective than the swiping method which can read out hidden HTML codes.
Step 5. Use Speak Screen in iBooks so your phone can keep reading texts to you automatically
Unlike Speak Selection, Speak Screen can open the pages of your e-book automatically and still be able to keep reading while you run other applications.
