The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a very popular system in the hacking community. Apart from being very easy to access, there are many self-made programs for this system. Follow this guide to unlock the full power of your PSP.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Understanding the Basics
Step 1. Understand how to hack PSP
By hacking your PSP you can access a wide variety of homemade programs. This program is called Homebrew, and its types range from gaming to productivity programs.
- A hacked PSP will also run an emulator, which is a program for playing games from classic consoles on the PSP.
- A hacked PSP can run PSP game images without having to own a copy of the original. This only applies to official game reserves.
Step 2. Understand the types of hacks
Today there are more and more variations of PSP hacks. This console is no longer supported, and standard hacks can be performed on any system running the latest official version.
Method 2 of 3: Hacking Preparation
Step 1. Find the PSP model number
The model number will determine the programs that can be installed during and after the hack. There are basically two kinds of processes, depending on the PSP model.
- For older PSPs, remove the battery. To the right of the Sony logo, there will be the words “PSP-XXXX”. You need to know if the model is 1xxx, 2XXX, or 3xxx.
- For the PSP Go, the model number can be found by flipping the screen that opens and looking at the inscription in the upper left corner. The writing format is N1XXX.
- The ideal model is 2XXX or older. The 3xxx and PSP Go models are hackable, but the hack options are limited.
Step 2. Update the PSP
To start the hack, you'll need to make sure your PSP is updated to version 6.60. You can also use the update function on the system, or download the file directly from the Sony website.
- If you downloaded the update file from the Sony website, copy the file to your PSP by connecting your PSP to your computer. Place the file in the PSP/GAME/UPDATE/ folder and run the update file from the PSP.
- To copy files to PSP, you must change the PSP mode to USB. After connecting your PSP to your computer, scroll left on the PSP menu until you reach the settings menu, then scroll up to select USB mode. The PSP will be accessed as a storage device on the computer.
Step 3. Download the custom firmware
You will need PRO-C which can be found in several places on the internet. Extract it and then copy the firmware file to your PSP using USB mode, into the PSP/GAME/ folder.
Method 3 of 3: Installing Firmware
Step 1. Install the copied firmware file
Scroll to the Games menu. Look for the “PRO Update” icon, then select it with the X button. The screen will go black and show several options. Press X to install firmware. After a few moments, you will get a Completed message. Press X again to start firmware.
Step 2. Perform IPL flash
For 1xxx and 2XXX PSP models, you will need to launch “CIPL Flasher” in the Game menu. This will change the IPL (Initial Program Loader) so that the custom firmware can be launched at system startup.
Step 3. Run Fast Recovery
For PSP 3xxx and PSP Go, you must run Fast Recovery after system startup, because IPL cannot be flashed on these systems. Fast Recovery will load the custom firmware once the system boots up.
Step 4. Delete the installation files
The PSP has been hacked successfully and is ready to use after the IPL flash is complete. You can delete CIPL Flasher and PRO Update files. Make sure you save Fast Recovery for 3xxx or PSP Go models.
