Online buyers are no stranger to the term "buyer's remorse". If you regret a purchase you just made, you can usually cancel the order and get your money back. There are some general rules for canceling an online order and getting your money back.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Canceling Immediately
Step 1. Keep copies of all order confirmations
Take screenshots of important customer service numbers and links. If you need to cancel an order, you will have easy access to the company's cancellation procedure.
Step 2. Get to know your seller
Some e-commerce sites are better than others when it comes to order cancellations. Most big name retailers and Amazon have cancellation procedures on their sites, whereas some sites with consumer-to-consumer methods, such as eBay may not allow cancellations on some purchases.
If the retailer doesn't list a cancellation policy, but you follow through, the courts and credit card companies will often still provide customer support. If the company says the cancellation isn't accepted, you most likely won't receive support through your credit card company
Step 3. Try to cancel the online order as soon as possible
The best course of action for doing a full cancellation and getting a refund is to cancel it before the item is shipped.
Step 4. Search the online form to cancel your order
Log in to your account and search for your order list. Then, click "Cancel" or fill in the cancellation form with your name, email, telephone number, confirmation number, order number and reason for cancellation.
Step 5. Write an email including these details to customer service if the site instructs you to do so
Be sure to include your name, email, phone number, confirmation number, item ordered, order number and reason for cancellation.
Step 6. Call the customer service number provided on the confirmation email or on the order page
This is faster than sending an email if the site has a service line 24 hours and 7 days a week. We recommend that you try both ways, namely by filling out the email/order cancellation form and by calling them to make sure your cancellation is accepted.
Step 7. Look for the cancellation confirmation email
Customer service may provide you with a confirmation number over the phone. Save this number for future reference.
Step 8. Check your credit card bill to ensure that you have received a refund if you managed to cancel the order before the item was shipped
Note that some refunds take 30 days to appear on your bill.
Follow up if the money has not been returned within 15 to 30 days
Method 2 of 3: Canceling After Delivery
Step 1. Call the customer service number if you get an email saying that the order cannot be canceled because the item has already been shipped
In some cases, a customer service representative may stop a shipment while the item is in transit.
Step 2. Ask customer service how they will process your cancellation
Normally, your order will be treated as a returned item and shipping costs will be deducted, but you will get a full refund when the item is returned.
Step 3. Reject delivery if it is marked "Sign on Delivery
If you can't contact the company, you can try waiting for someone from UPS, USPS, DHL or FedEx and tell them you refuse to accept delivery. The item will be sent back to the return address.
Step 4. Contact customer service via email and telephone asking them to return the item and stating that the item has not been used and has not been opened
Make a note of the date and tracking number so you can use it if the package is not returned properly.
Step 5. Wait for your refund
The money will arrive within 30 days.
Method 3 of 3: Returning/Exchanging Items
Step 1. Receive the box when the order has been completed and shipped to you
Sometimes the box will simply be left at your delivery location, leaving you with no option to refuse the package.
Step 2. Open the package
Look for instructions on how to return the item.
Step 3. Make a copy of the receipt for your notes
Include a return request in your package.
Step 4. Send the package with the shipping label with the address on it and bring it to the location of the shipping agent or send it through the post office in your city
Ask for a receipt so you can prove that you sent the box.
- We recommend that you ask for a shipping signature and tracking number when returning items.
- Shipping costs for receiving the item and sending it back are usually the responsibility of the buyer. Double-check the returns section of your packing slip to see if the company offers free returns. If they offer one, make sure you drop the package off at a location they use to send returns for free, such as FedEx or UPS.
