The Voldyne 5000 is a popular incentive spirometer. This tool serves to open the air sacs in the lungs after surgery and to facilitate deep breathing and keep the lungs clean. Proper use can speed up the healing period and reduce the risk of developing pneumonia or other respiratory problems.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Getting Ready
Step 1. Determine the desired target
When you use the Voldyne 5000 under the supervision of a doctor, nurse or respiratory therapist, they generally have a target number to aim for.
- The Voldyne 5000 has a target range between 250 and 2500 ml. Therefore, you should target numbers in this range. This range indicates the amount of air volume that can be accepted by your lungs.
- While it is usually preferable to start this procedure by setting a target volume target, it is not really necessary for the first use. You still have to use the results obtained from each use to determine the next target.
Step 2. Set the marker needle
Look for the yellow marker on the side of the large measuring tube. Slide the marker up or down on the number position according to the desired target.
If you don't have a target for your first use, you don't need to set the needle at this point. You just need to adjust the position of the marker on the next use
Step 3. Sit up straight
Take a position at the inner end of the mattress or chair and sit up straight. If you want, you can lean forward slightly, but don't bend over or lean back too much.
- Almost the same as above, do not let the position of the head bent back.
- If you can't get into a sitting position on the inner end of the mattress, you should at least sit as far as possible when using the mattress. When using an adjustable hospital bed, you can use the mattress adjuster or knob to raise the head and help you sit up.
Step 4. Hold the Voldyne 5000 in an upright position
Maintain this position with the label facing you.
- Keep the instrument as flat as possible so that the procedure can run smoothly and all readings will be accurate.
- You should have a clear picture of the pin, the volume target (pump) piston, and the main piston. Note that the target piston is the yellow cylinder under the "Good, Better, Best" label on the side of the tool and the main piston is a large white disc at the bottom of the large cylinder.
Part 2 of 3: B Using Voldyne 5000
Step 1. Exhale
Breathe normally, exhaling as much air as possible from your lungs.
- Exhale through your mouth to let out more air in less time.
- Full exhalation is very important. If you only exhale partially, you won't be able to inhale as deeply as you would empty your lungs, making it harder for you to reach your target or get accurate results.
Step 2. Place the mouthpiece in the mouth
Press your lips firmly against the area around the mouthpiece to lock in position.
- Position the tongue as needed to ensure that the tongue does not obstruct the connecting instrument and interfere with the wearing process.
- You must lock the mouth position on the coupling instrument and keep it firmly. Otherwise, some of the air from outside the Voldyne 5000 will be inhaled and result in a lower measurement result than it should be.
Step 3. Breathe in slowly
Breathe in deeply and slowly. Keep doing it until you reach your target or you can't take deep breaths anymore.
- If you are able to lock and maintain the position of your mouth, the process of inhaling this breath will be similar to the sensation of drinking thick liquid through a small straw.
- Watch the target piston as it moves between the "Good", "Better" and "Best" labels. This indicator functions to measure the rate of inhalation, slower breaths will produce better results. Try to keep it in the "Better" and "Best" ranges. Inhaling slowly will make the air sacs in the lungs open longer so that it will make it easier for you to breathe deeper.
- Pay attention to the main piston as well. Try to get this piston to hit the target marked by the yellow marker needle. You can let this piston go higher, but you can't force it.
Step 4. Hold your breath for 3 to 5 seconds
After inhaling, pause and hold your breath for at least 3 seconds.
Pay attention to the main piston as you hold your breath. The main piston will drop slowly to the "zero" position. After that, you can proceed to the next process
Step 5. Exhale as usual
Remove the mouthpiece and exhale as usual.
- As before, try to get all the air out of your lungs on this exhalation.
- If you feel like you're out of breath or if your lungs feel tired, take a few normal breaths before moving on to the next process. However, you should still end this process by exhaling before continuing.
Step 6. Reset indicators
Unless you are notified in advance by a nurse or respiratory therapist, you should shift the position of the indicator to the highest it has reached.
This reset aims to adjust the target based on your current lung capacity. When repeating the exercise, set the (most)recent result you have achieved as the target to aim for
Step 7. Repeat as directed
Repeat this procedure as directed by your healthcare provider. Generally, you will need to repeat this procedure 10 to 15 times during each sitting.
- If the nurse or therapist does not specify the number of repetitions, aim for at least 10 repetitions. You can do more than this amount, but stop if you feel dizzy, dizzy, or too tired to continue.
- Don't try to force yourself into this exercise. Do it gradually and breathe normally every time you do the exercise. If you feel dizzy or lightheaded, pause for a longer period of time for each repetition.
- Reset the yellow needle each time you complete the procedure, but only change it when you reach a higher target point. Do not move the needle to a lower position unless the doctor, nurse, or therapist instructs it.
Step 8. Cough
After completing the entire procedure, take a deep breath and cough two or three times.
- Coughing will help clear mucus from your lungs, making it easier for you to breathe.
- If you have had surgery on your chest or stomach, or if you have pain when you cough, hold a pillow or jacket folded against your chest firmly when you cough. Applying pressure to the incision site in this way will support the area and reduce the pain you feel.
Part 3 of 3: Continuing Therapy
Step 1. Clean after each use
Clean the mouthpiece with soap and water thoroughly after each use. Rinse and dry with a clean paper towel.
- If you wish, you can clean the splicing instrument with an antiseptic mouth wash instead of soap and water.
- When using soap and water, you should make sure to rinse off any soap residue before using the spirometer again.
- On the Voldyne 5000, the included standard mouthpiece is intended for permanent use. Use this coupling instrument every time you use it. If you replace it with a disposable splicing instrument, you must not use the same plug for more than 24 hours.
Step 2. Repeat the procedure described above throughout the day
You will need to use the device in the same way every one to two hours or as directed by a nurse, doctor, or respiratory therapist.
Note that in most cases, you are only allowed to do this exercise during your normal waking time. The body needs adequate rest to make a full recovery. Therefore, you should not wake yourself up in the middle of the night to repeat the exercise
Step 3. Keep a record of the results obtained
While this isn't required, it's a good idea to write notes of your results. This record needs to contain data items from each time the tool is used.
- For each data item, record the time and day, the number of repetitions performed, and the number of volume targets to be achieved.
- This record serves to monitor the development of your lungs and monitor any increase or decrease in lung functional ability.
- Your health care provider may also keep a similar record, but you should still keep a personal record so you can monitor your own progress.
Step 4. Take a walk
When you're well enough to get out of bed and walk safely on your own, try taking a walk between each use of the Voldyne 5000. While walking, take deep breaths and coughs two or three times.
Coughing exercises performed while walking can clear the lungs more thoroughly and make breathing much easier
Warning
- If you have lung-related pain or incisions, tell your healthcare provider about this. You will find it more difficult to breathe deeply when you feel pain.
- Tell your doctor, nurse, or respiratory therapist if you start to feel dizzy or lightheaded. Do not continue to use it while you still feel it.
- When using the Voldyne 5000 at home, call 118 or 119 or emergency services if you have unusual chest pain or have difficulty breathing (gasping for air) after the procedure.
