Save money and protect the environment while making fish pond filters. This strainer is also good for fish!
Step
Step 1. Look for a plastic trash can with a lid
Make a drain hole in the trash can, on the side near the bottom. Place the trash can in a position that allows waste water to flow back into the fish pond.
Step 2. Fill the trash can with filter material
Step 3. Insert the waterproof pump into the fish pond
Insert the drain hose from the pump into the top of the trash can.
Step 4. Turn on the pump
The water will flow from the top of the trash can, through the filter material, into the drain hole, then into the fish pond.
Step 5. Done
Tips
- If you want to install a water inlet at the bottom of the container, you can find a tool (this is usually called a rainwater catchment pipe joint). The advantage of moving water up is that you create a height for the waterfall and if the filter gets clogged, your pool doesn't dry out. You should use a snout container or a container with a lip, the bigger the better. Use igneous rock. This rock type works very well.
- You can also make a small version of the filter system using a plastic shoebox. The smaller version can be placed in the pool and attached to the pump so that the pool water is sucked through the filter instead of flowing over the filter.
- You can also fill the trash can halfway with gravel and then place a sponge filter material on top.
