Many people choose to wear makeup every day, either to cover blemishes or just to enhance their natural beauty. However, a makeup routine can be daunting for someone just starting out. While it may seem complicated and time-consuming, knowing which products to use and in what order is actually very simple and easy to master. It will also help to break the routine into steps.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Preparing the Face
Step 1. Start with a completely clean face
The first part of this routine is cleansing your face. Use a washcloth, soap, and warm (but not hot) water to gently clean your face. Skip this step if you shower in the morning and have already cleaned your face.
What is more important is to make sure that your face is clean at night. Always make sure to remove makeup before going to bed. If not cleaned, makeup can clog pores and cause acne. Many dermatologists recommend using disposable exfoliating wipes to remove makeup
Step 2. Apply sunscreen and moisturizer
If you are going to be spending time outdoors and in the sun, be sure to apply sunscreen on your face. Use products that are specifically designed for the face, because these types have a lower risk of leaving oily stains and making it difficult to apply makeup. If your skin tends to be dry and flaky, be sure to apply a little moisturizer. Makeup can hide flaky skin, but over time it will look and look worse. If you need both, apply sunscreen first.
Step 3. Apply primer
Primer helps make makeup easy to apply and long lasting. You just need to apply it with your fingertips. Apply the primer on the skin area that will be covered with makeup. If you're going to use foundation, apply the primer on your forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks.
If you're going to be wearing eyeliner or eyeshadow, apply a primer on your eyelids and the area under your eyebrows. A general primer can usually be used in this area as well. However, you can also use a primer that is softer and made especially for the eyelids
Part 2 of 3: Applying Foundation
Step 1. Choose the right foundation
There are many types of foundations and each has different benefits and drawbacks. Although some people use stick foundations, liquid foundations tend to be the more popular choice.
- Determining the right foundation can be quite difficult. Find a foundation that best matches your natural skin tone.
- If your skin is prone to irritation, look for foundations labeled "gentle" and "for sensitive skin."
- Since quality foundation is expensive, you may not be able to experiment too much. When choosing a new foundation, try talking to a beautician at a makeup booth (supermarket) or cosmetic store. They will likely offer to do your makeup for free. They can also choose a shade that matches your skin tone. You can try applying different products on your skin without having to buy anything.
Step 2. Apply foundation
A thin and even layer of foundation will make the skin look smooth and have the same color. How you apply your foundation will depend on the type you choose.
- For liquid or cream foundation, start by adding a small dab of foundation near the center of your face (like the side of your nose) and work your way outward. You can use your fingertips, a foundation brush, or a makeup sponge. Add the amount as needed. Do not press the foundation into the skin. Apply foundation as when painting on canvas.
- Most compact foundations come in containers or sticks. You can apply it with your fingers (as when applying liquid foundation) or you can apply stick foundation directly to the skin. If stick foundation is applied directly to the skin, more area will be covered but with a thicker layer.
- Whatever type you use, apply foundation until it looks natural. Use small circular motions with your applicator of choice until the foundation looks smooth on the skin.
Step 3. Apply concealer on the problem areas
If there are areas that look uneven even after you've covered them with foundation (like pimples or eye bags), you can cover them with a little concealer. Apply a small amount of concealer to these areas and blend it in using the technique used for foundation.
Choose a concealer like when choosing a foundation. However, unlike foundation, it's best to choose a concealer one or two shades lighter than your natural skin tone. To narrow down the choices, try dabbing concealer on your hands
Step 4. Apply translucent powder
When using foundation, you should always cover it with powder. This will help make the makeup last longer and not easily come off. Use a brush to apply translucent powder to the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin.
Part 3 of 3: Adding Color
Step 1. Apply blush (blush on) and or
Blusher and bronzer are tinted powders made to make skin look better. Blusher can make your cheeks look healthy and slightly flushed, while bronzer will make your skin appear tan. Both of these products are intended for the cheeks, but you can also apply bronzer to the nose, chin, and forehead. Use a round makeup brush to apply it on the skin.
- Just like with any other type of makeup, there are a few things to keep in mind when choosing bronzer or blush. For bronzer, choose a shade that is relatively neutral and slightly darker than your natural skin tone. For blush, try to match the natural skin tone of your cheeks when you are blushing. For lighter skin tones, choose a pink or peach blush. Good blush colors for medium skin tones are muted mauve, rose, apricot, or berry. For dark skin, dramatic colors like raisin, brick red, and bright tangerine. While they may appear striking for everyday makeup, these colors will appear soft and neutral on darker skin.
- Some people use bronzer to contour the cheekbones. If you're going to do this, you'll need at least two shades of bronzer: one that's slightly lighter than your natural skin tone and one that's slightly darker. Use a clean makeup brush to add lighter color to the cheekbones first. Then, add bronzer with a darker shade underneath. Use a brush to smooth it out until it looks natural.
Step 2. Apply eye primer
If you haven't already, be sure to apply a primer to the eye area before adding eye shadow. Use your fingertips to lightly press the primer on your eyelids and the area under the crease of your eye. You can use a primer used for the face or a primer specifically for the eyes. If you're using a facial primer, check the packaging to make sure it's safe for the eyes.
Step 3. Choose an eyeshadow color
To get started, you'll need at least two colors with one darker than the other. Think about the concept of the appearance you want. When it comes to eyeshadow, you have three general options:
- Natural style. With this style, many people will not notice that you are wearing eye makeup. Choose a color that is similar to your skin tone. Use a neutral eye shadow palette consisting of peach, olive, tan, and or brown colors.
- Smoky style. For smoky eyes, you have to look like you're wearing makeup. However, this style is very popular and by many people are used in their daily life. Use a palette consisting of dark gray and charcoal. Avoid black eye shadow because it will be difficult to create.
- colorful style. For this style, you can use any color. Choose your favorite color or a color that matches your eyes. For eye shadow, you can use a darker version of the color or smoky charcoal.
Step 4. Apply the lightest eyeshadow first
This eyeshadow will be the base color. Depending on the concept you want, apply the basic eye shadow only on the eyelids or from the eyelids to the eyebrows. Use a thin makeup brush or eye shadow applicator.
Step 5. Apply a darker shade of eyeshadow on the lids
Cover the entire eyelid with the eye shadow, but stop at the crease of the eye. Start at the lash line and apply the eyeshadow to the crease of the eye. Using the same circular motions when applying the foundation, mix the two eyeshadows well.
Step 6. Make the eyes stand out with a little eyeliner
You can use pencil eyeliner, liquid eyeliner, or both (covering solid eyeliner with liquid eyeliner). Use black or dark brown eyeliner. If you want to appear in a colorful style, you can choose a darker eye shadow color instead.
- Start by marking the lash line. Start from the outer corner of the eye and work your way up to the nose.
- Smooth the line with the smudging tool on the other side of the eyeliner until the line looks full, without gaps. If there is no smudger on your eyeliner, use a cotton swab to spread it out.
- Many people only wear eyeliner on the top of the eye. However, if you choose to wear it on both halves, make sure the lines connect at the outer edge of the eye.
Step 7. Apply the final touches to the eyes
When applying eye makeup, focus on the eyelashes last. If you curl it, your lashes will appear longer. For optimal results, make sure to position the eyelash curler at the base of the lashes near the lash line. After that, apply mascara. You can not curl your lashes first and apply mascara right away.
Step 8. Add lipstick or lip gloss
Like eye shadow, for lip makeup, you also have to choose between natural or striking colors. For everyday makeup, most people choose pinks and browns that are neutral and closest to their natural lip color. There are also those who choose classic red or plum lipstick. However, there are also those who don't wear lipstick at all and only use lip gloss or clear lip balm. Choose the lip makeup product that best suits you.
- You should apply the lipstick or lip gloss when the rest of the makeup has dried. Bring the product with you in case you have to re-apply it at a later time.
- Many people just apply lipstick with their favorite color on the lips. However, you can use a lot of tricks to make it easier to use and look more professional.
- Start by adding foundation or lip balm to serve as a primer for your lipstick.
- Before applying lipstick, outline the lips with a neutral colored lip liner. This will help define your lips and keep the lipstick from smearing in a mess.
Tips
- A tinted moisturizer or BB cream is a great alternative if you don't want to wear a lot of makeup. By applying a small amount of this all-in-one product to problem areas on your face, you don't need to use primer, foundation, and concealer. Moisturizers or BB creams are great to use in summer when the foundation might feel too heavy on the skin.
- Skip a few steps if you don't think they're important. Not everyone wears eye shadow, eyeliner, blusher, bronzer, mascara, and lipstick. You can also leave foundation if your skin is already quite perfect. Do the steps that best suit your face.
- Match the color of your makeup to the dress code at your work or school.
- Even if you don't want to wear too much make-up and have clear skin (no problem), always carry concealer with you in case you need to cover up a pimple or blemish in an emergency.
