Unlike wigs made of synthetic hair, natural hair wigs are relatively easy to color. You can use hair dye, developer, and even the same tools to color your wig as you would normal hair dye. Just mix the hair dye, then apply it to the wig. Wash the wig after the dyeing process to keep it clean and shiny. Keep in mind that hair dye will not work with synthetic hair wigs.

Part 1 of 3: Mixing Colors
Step 1. Choose a dye for regular hair
You can use any hair dye available at the pharmacy or supermarket. However, keep in mind that you should dye your natural hair wig darker. Do not try to lighten the color of the wig as the bleaching agent used in this process can weaken the hair on the wig.
Do not use fabric dye on human hair wigs. Only use hair dye
Step 2. Select volume 20 developer
Lower volume may be too weak. A volume 20 developer will let you change your hair color a level or two while a volume 30 developer can make your hair darker. Generally, volume 20 developers are quite effective for this purpose.
Step 3. Put on rubber gloves
Gloves will protect the skin from irritation and stains from the dye. Use rubber gloves that you don't mind throwing away after use.
Step 4. Mix the dye and developer in a plastic bowl
Read the instructions on the package to find out how much dye and developer to mix. Use a plastic spoon to mix the ingredients. If your hair dye looks a little too light, don't worry. Over time the color will darken.
- If the length of the wig exceeds the shoulders, you may need two boxes of dye.
- Do not use a metal bowl or spoon to mix hair dye. Metals can cause the dye to oxidize, which can change its color.
Part 2 of 3: Applying Dye
Step 1. Do a test on a few strands of hair
Use your fingers or a small brush to apply the dye to small strands of hair. Choose hair from parts that are not easily visible. Wait 30-40 minutes. If you like the color, apply it all over the wig. If you don't like the color, choose a different hair color.
Step 2. Soak the wig in the dye
Place the wig in the bowl containing the hair dye. Use your hands to carefully pick up the dye and spread it all over the wig. Do it slowly and try not to rub the wig harshly.
Step 3. Attach the wig to the wig stand
The wig stand will help maintain the shape and style of the hair after the coloring process. Attach the wig to the stand as you would when you put the wig on the head. Use T-pin clasps to hold the wig securely in place.
The dye may drip off the wig. You can place a towel or plastic sheet around the stand to protect the furniture from stains
Step 4. Comb the wig hair
Use a comb or wig brush to spread the dye all over the wig. Make sure the dye is evenly distributed throughout the hair strands. This will help make your colored hair look more natural.
Step 5. Allow the wig to soak into the hair
Read the instructions on the packaging to see how long it will take. Most of these processes take about 30-40 minutes. If you can't find this information, check the wig every 10 minutes. Once you get the color you want, you can wash the wig.
If you don't have a wig stand, leave the wig in the bowl until the dye soaks in. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap
Part 3 of 3: Washing Wigs
Step 1. Wash the wig with shampoo
Use a dye-safe shampoo or a special shampoo for wigs. Hold the wig under a warm tap to remove excess dye before using shampoo to wash it off. Rinse off the shampoo when you're done.
Step 2. Apply conditioner to the ends of the wig
This step will make the wig shinier. Avoid using conditioner at the roots of the wig as it can cause hair loss. Rinse off the conditioner with cold or warm water.
Step 3. Dry the wig carefully with a towel
Gently squeeze the wig with a towel to absorb excess water. Put the wig back on the stand to dry it.
Step 4. Let the wig dry on its own
You can let your hair dry naturally or use a blow dryer on a low setting. If you choose the first method, leave the wig on the holder to dry completely. If you are using a hairdryer, move the appliance up and down through the hair. Make sure the wig doesn't get too hot.
Tips
- If you're not sure about doing the coloring yourself, ask a professional hair stylist for help. He may be willing to do it for you.
- If you want to apply ombre coloring to the wig, add stripes or highlight the wig, use the same technique as you would with normal hair.
- Hair that has been dyed before may not absorb dye as easily as hair that has never been dyed.
