If you've ever wanted to eat a Subway sandwich but don't want to spend the time or money buying it at the store, try making your favorite sandwich at home. Try the classic way or create a new flavour. All you need is good bread, the right toppings and a little creativity.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Preparing Subway Sandwich Ingredients
Step 1. Collect the bread of your choice
Subway offers five main bread selections (as well as some limited-time options). To make Subway sandwiches, you need to buy the best ingredients. The main breads offered at Subway are:
- 9-grain wheat
- 9-grain honey oats (oats and honey)
- Italian (typically Italian)
- Italian herbs and cheese
- Flatbread (flat bread)
Step 2. Get cheesy
Cheese is one of the best parts of any sandwich. Don't skimp on your choices when making your subway sandwich. Of course if you find the cheese you want more than what Subway has to offer, buy it! Subway options differ from store to store but depending on your location, you may have heard of some of them:
- American
- Monterey cheddar.
- Feta
- Mozzarella
- Natural Cheddar
- Natural Pepper Jack
- Natural Provolone
- Swiss naturals.
Step 3. Satisfy your desire to eat meat
Of course, the most important part of a subway sandwich (except in vegetarian sandwiches) is the meat. There are many hot and cold cuts to choose from. Hot options include meatballs, steak, chicken teriyaki, and buffalo chicken, cold cuts to make your own sandwich include:
- Turkey
- Black Forest Ham
- Salami
- Roast beef
- Bologna
- Pepperoni
- Tuna salad
- Bacon
Step 4. Don't forget the toppings
Of course, a sandwich would be incomplete without a delicious topping. Fresh vegetables are a must so head to the nearest traditional market to buy your sandwich ingredients. What you must prepare include:
- Cucumber
- Lettuce
- Tomatoes
- Red onion
- Big green chili
- Spinach
- Banana Peppers
- Jalapenos
- Olive
- Pickles
Step 5. Prepare the final touches
To perfect a Subway sandwich, you need a delicious sauce. Choose just one or try a combination – the choice is yours. Don't forget salt and pepper with your choice of sauce. The options include:
- Oil
- Vinegar
- mayonnaise
- Mustard
- Honey mustard
- Sweet Onion
- Ranch
- Chipotle Southwest
Part 2 of 3: Making Subway Sandwich
Step 1. Place a large size of wax paper
This paper should be long enough to hold the bread and will keep the toppings from falling onto the table (so you just have to put it back in the bread). Place the bread on the paper, and cut the two long sides so that they open like a mouth (the mouth that swallows all the delicious ingredients).
Step 2. Place the meat on the top bun
After the bread is cut, open it, flatten it until it stays open. Place the cutlet on the top half of the loaf. The amount of meat you put is up to you (since you make it at home there's no limit to how much you can put!). Spread the meat so that it covers the top of the loaf.
Step 3. Place the cheese on top of the meat layer
At the Subway restaurant, the cheese is cut into triangles. If you want authentic, cut your cheese into triangles. Cut or not place the cheese on top of the cutlet.
When you cut the cheese into triangles, tessellate the cheese. This means alternating pieces of cheese so they don't overlap or pile up on each other
Step 4. Bake this half-finished sandwich if you wish
When you want your cheese to melt, turn on the oven and place the sandwiches on the baking sheet. Bake for a few minutes (until cheese is melted and bread is toasted). If you prefer a less crunchy sandwich, just skip this step.
Step 5. Place the vegetables on the bottom bun
Make sure to spread it over the entire surface of the bread. Since you're making your sandwich at home, there's no set rule for putting vegetables on a sandwich (everyone has different preferences for sub-sandwiches). Generally, you can start with the lettuce first then work your way up to the larger vegetables and finally the olives/pickles/whatever smaller you want.
Step 6. Finish your sandwich with a delicious dip
Again, the amount of sauce in the sandwich depends on your preference. But don't put too much because it will make the bread soggy. Place the sauce over the meat and cheese, and cover the bread. Now it's time to eat.
You can cut the sandwich in half to make it easier to eat
Part 3 of 3: Trying Traditional Subway Recipes
Step 1. Try Italian BMT
Choose the bread you want (Italian or Italian herb and cheese are popular choices for this type of sandwich) then place the spicy pepperoni slices, Genoa salami, and Black Forest ham. Use cheese, or no formaggio (cheese in Italian) and place the vegetables right away. Finally, add oil and vinegar.
Step 2. Try Subway Melt
This sandwich is full of delicious meat and melted cheese. Try 9-grain wheat bread and place sliced ham, turkey, and bacon. Then, put your favorite cheese slices and put them all in the oven for a few minutes. When the sandwich comes out with melted cheese and crispy bread, toss in your favorite vegetables and sauce for dessert, a delicious touch.
Step 3. Try the delicious menu of Meatball Marinara
Use the meatballs and pour the marinara over them. Then add your favorite cheese (mozzarella is a good choice) and place in the oven until the cheese melts. Delicious!
Tips
- Use a serrated knife to cut the bread for a nice cut
- Spinach leaves can be used instead of lettuce.
- Add other fillers if you like, even if they are not on the list above.
- You don't have to roll the sandwich, but it's okay! Rolled up the tasty ingredients stay inside and squeeze a little until they are denser inside.
- You can also use the microwave instead of the oven to melt the cheese.
