In Spanish, the phrase " buenos días " literally means "good afternoon". However, in Spanish-speaking countries, "buenos días" is used to say "good morning". Other phrases are used to say good afternoon and good night. We can add some words to greet certain people. As is the case in Indonesian, there are several other phrases that are commonly used to say hello in the morning.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Saying "Good Morning"
Step 1. Use "buenos días" (bu-E-nos DI-as) as the standard morning greeting
If you studied Spanish at school, this may be the first phrase you learn, which means "good morning" in Spanish.
Step 2. Use " buen día " (bu-EN DI-a) in other situations
In some countries in Latin America, for example in Puerto Rico and Bolivia, the phrase " buen día " is used to say "good morning" in informal situations.
This greeting is very informal, and is usually considered slang. So, it is better to use it when talking to friends or close acquaintances who are the same age as you
Step 3. Say "¡buenas! " The short form of this informal greeting is derived from " buenos días." While technically it can be used at any time, if you use it in the morning it will mean "good morning".
Pronounce "buenas" as "bu-E-nas."
Method 2 of 3: Greet Specific People
Step 1. Follow the greeting with a greeting for the person
Just as we use "Pak" or "Madam" in Indonesian, we can add " señor ", " señora ", or " señorita " after " buenos días " to greet people more politely or formally.
- Señor (se-NYOR) means "Sir" and can be addressed to any man, especially men who are older than you or domiciled.
- Señora (se-NYO-ra) means "Mom" and should be addressed to a married woman or a woman who is older than you or domiciled.
- Señorita (se-nyo-RI-ta) means "Miss" and is addressed to women who are younger or unmarried, but more polite.
Step 2. Use a specific name or title
If you want to distinguish someone from others, or want to greet them with a different greeting, just add the word or phrase you want after " buenos días ".
For example, if you want to say good morning to your doctor, just say "Buenos días, doctor."
Step 3. Greet a group of people with " muy buenos días a todos " (mu-I bu-E-nos DI-as a TO-dos)
If you are speaking in front of a group of people or walking towards a large number of people, you can say hello to all of them at once using this phrase. The literal translation is "Good morning to all of you."
Since this phrase is a bit formal, use it on more formal occasions. For example, you could greet breakfast at a business meeting by saying "muy buenos días a todos."
Method 3 of 3: Another Good Morning Greetings
Step 1. Call out " ¡arriba! "Greetings" ¡arriba! " (a-RI-ba) literally means "wake up!" This exclamation is often used to greet a child or loved one who is still in bed to tell them to get up.
This greeting is similar to "rise and shine" in English
Step 2. Say "yes amaneció " (yes a-ma-ne-ci-O)
If you want to wake someone while they are still asleep, use this phrase. The literal translation is "it's morning".
The meaning of this phrase is that the day has passed and left those who are still sleeping, and the time for sleep is up. Some people may find this phrase impolite. So. don't use them unless you are close enough to them
Step 3. Ask " Como amaneció usted? " If you want to politely ask how they are this morning, you can use " Cómo amaneció usted? " (KO-mo a-ma-ne-ci-O US-ted), which means "How are you this morning".
- Literally, this question can be translated “How was your morning?” This expression is similar to asking how their condition was when they woke up this morning.
- You can also say " Qué tal va tu mañana? " (qe tal va tu ma-NYA-na), which means "How is it going this morning?" This question is best said in the morning before noon.
Step 4. Use " que tengas buen día " (qe ten-GAS bu-EN DI-a) when separating
While we can use " buenos días " both for meeting and parting in Spanish, you can also use this phrase, which means "have a good day."
- You can also say " que tengas un lindo día " (qe ten-GAS un LIN-do DI-a), which means "have a nice day." This phrase is usually used in informal situations.
- For more formal situations, you can use " que tenga buen día " (qe ten-GA bu-EN DI-a), which means "I wish you a good day."
Step 5. Ask how they slept last night
In Spanish, it is common to ask a close friend or family member how they slept last night, especially early in the morning. The formal way of saying this is " Durmió bien? " (dur-mi-O bi-EN), which means "Did you sleep well?"
