Hijab is a principle of modesty in Islam, it is also a word to refer to the cloth covering the face and head of Muslim women. Muslim women have the right to interpret the rules of modest dress in the Koran. So, there is not only one proper way to dress modestly for Muslim women or girls, but there are various ways. Although many women choose to wear the hijab, many also choose not to wear it.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Making Knowledge-Based Decisions
Step 1. Study and evaluate religious and scientific books on modesty in Muslim culture
For centuries, Muslim scholars have debated about the modest dress code laid down for adherents of the Islamic faith. By understanding the debate and interpreting the verses of the Koran, you can understand the benefits of wearing the hijab and make informed choices.

Step 2. Discuss the topic of politeness with parents
Talk to your mom and dad to find out what their expectations are about your style of dress, and ask them for advice and guidance. Ask them what they think about modest attire. Are they comfortable letting you wear a long shirt or skirt, or do they prefer you to wear an abaya? What do they think about the veil?
- Buy clothes with mom and/or dad.
- Talk to the women in your family about their process of understanding the necessity of wearing the hijab.
Step 3. Determine what it means to dress modestly
This decision is a personal choice based primarily on belief, as well as political opinion and cultural understanding.
- Resolve to fully commit to wearing the hijab every day.
- The use of hijab occasionally or sometimes yes and sometimes it should not be avoided because Allah loves consistency in worship.
- Hijab is not just a piece of cloth, but shows modesty. Wearing the hijab does not automatically make you a polite person. Hijab is a way of life.
Step 4. Reconfirm your decision periodically
Even though you initially chose to wear the hijab as a teenager, you may feel tempted to take it off as an adult. This is very common. Feel free to review the instructions and rationale for wearing the hijab in the Quran and Sunnah if you need a reminder.
Method 2 of 3: Dress Modestly with Hijab
Step 1. Wear a hijab or head covering
In the Qur'an, Allah commands Muslim women to only reveal what is normally exposed. Many understand this rule with the interpretation that only the palms of a woman's hands and face (sometimes feet) are allowed to be shown. Muslim women obey this rule by wearing the hijab, a cloth that covers their heads and only shows their face, while covering their hair, neck and chest. You can choose different types of hijab or head covering. Choose the one that's right for you:
- Shayla, or hijab. Wrap this rectangular scarf around your head and use safety pins to secure it over your shoulders.
- Khimar. This wide scarf is tightly wrapped around the head, and falls down the middle of the back.
- Chador. If you want a more covering fabric, opt for this floor-length scarf. Chador is a longer version of the khimar.
- Niqab, or veil. The veil is a face covering that many Muslim women choose as additional protection.
- Burqa, or burqa. The burkak is a veil that covers head to toe, the only part that is exposed is a small net in front of the eyes.
- Traditionally, the hijab is plain and not flashy in colors, such as black, white, blue, and brown. If you are comfortable wearing patterns and colors, you can choose a fashionable scarf from a clothing store to replace a plain hijab.
Step 2. Wear loose clothing
As a complement to the hijab, wear loose tops and bottoms that don't show your curves. See-through or tight clothing should be avoided.
- Remember, the clothes you choose depend entirely on your comfort level and understanding of the rules of modesty. Ask your parents for a secondary opinion if you're unsure about a particular outfit.
- If you want to cover your body completely, buy maxi skirts, wide-pipe pants, robes, and abayas.
- Want to wear jeans or leggings? Match it with a top or long dress.
- If you want a tighter outfit, cover it with a robe or abaya.
Step 3. Make up your face naturally
As with striking colors and patterns of clothing, facial makeup should also not be excessive. If you want to apply daily makeup, choose natural makeup. Use a little foundation, blush, mascara, and lip gloss just to showcase your natural beauty and facial features.
For special occasions, such as Eid, you can wear more dramatic makeup
Step 4. Limit the jewelry you wear
Avoid bulky necklaces and flashy earrings. Instead, choose small jewelry that is easy to tuck under the hijab.
- If you want to wear accessories, try to choose accessories that are not flashy.
- Avoid prestigious brands or designer hijabs.
Method 3 of 3: Dress Modestly Without Hijab
Step 1. Wear clothes that don't show your curves
You can still dress modestly even if you don't wear a hijab. Choose wide-pipe pants and matching long-sleeved shirts instead of tight, revealing tops and bottoms. Consider traditional clothing such as a long tunic or brackets and baggy pants.
- Choose clothes based on your comfort level.
- Maxi skirts, long dresses, and loose tops are essential items that you must have if you want to dress modestly.
- Get a second opinion if you're not sure if your outfit is too tight.
- Closed clothes don't have to be old-fashioned and look old. Mix and match trendy or classic outfits with essentials to create a stylish look. Pair black jeans with boots, a long coat, and a turtleneck sweater. Remember that the reason you wear cover-up is not to attract men's attention. So, choose clothes that do not reveal the curves of the body. Do not wear short clothes, choose a long top that covers the buttocks.
Step 2. Wear layers of clothing
Layered clothing is the key to creating a trendy, modest look. Do you have a nice short cut? Wear it over a blouse or long-sleeved shirt. Add a scarf for extra cover and color. Wear tight jeans with a long sweater, coat, or flannel blouse tied around the waist.
Don't hesitate to be creative. Try on several layers of clothing until you find the one that is most comfortable
Step 3. Wear a top with a high neckline
Determine the height of the neckline by measuring the distance between the collarbone and the top of the shirt using your fingers or a tape measure. The ideal width is one to four fingers, while five fingers are almost open. Cover the cleavage with a turtleneck top, a sabrina, and a collared blouse.
- Tie a scarf to cover the low neckline.
- Wear a high-necked camis under a shirt that has a neck that is too low.
Step 4. Check how you look in the mirror
Before going out, stand in front of a body-high mirror. Bend forward, lean back, and tilt to the side. Try sitting up and raising your arms. If your shirt lifts up to reveal your waist or chest, change it or add layers before leaving.
Step 5. Put on natural makeup
Choose light makeup when dressing up. Use a small amount of concealer, blush, mascara, and lip gloss to create a fresh and simple makeup. Makeup is only to support natural beauty, not to cover or highlight.
- During special occasions, such as Eid, choose a more dramatic and festive look. Try smoky eyes and purplish lips.
- Ask for tips on makeup from mom or friends. How can they apply makeup naturally?
Step 6. Limit the jewelry you wear
Simple, unobtrusive jewelry can also have a big impact on your appearance. Choose a necklace and small earrings.
