You can remove stains or hair dye marks from your carpet using the right materials and techniques. First, try removing the stain without harsh chemicals. You can use a mixture of water, vinegar, and dish soap, as well as alcohol. For a stronger cleaning agent, use an ammonia-based cleaning product. As a last resort, use hydrogen peroxide for a powerful stain remover. If the rug is discolored after you've removed the hair dye stain, try re-coloring the rug using a felt-tip pen or marker.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Dishwashing Soap, Vinegar and Alcohol
Step 1. Mix dish soap, vinegar and water
Prepare a large bowl or bucket, then pour 480 ml of warm water. Add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of dish soap and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of vinegar. Mix the ingredients afterwards.
Step 2. Blot the mixture on the stain using a clean washcloth
Dip a clean washcloth in the cleaning mixture. Squeeze the cloth to prevent the carpet from getting wet. After that, carefully press the cloth against the stain. Do not rub the cloth against the stain to prevent the dye from going deeper into the carpet fibers.
Step 3. Remove the stain with a dry cloth
After using the cleaning mixture on the hair dye stain, use a clean, dry cloth to remove the stain. The dry cloth will absorb any excess paint that has been removed by the cleaning mixture. Alternately, use the cleaning mixture and remove with a dry towel until the stain is gone.
Use a rag that you don't mind getting dirty
Step 4. Wet the stained area with a sponge and water, then remove the stain again with a dry cloth
Once the stain is removed, dab a sponge dipped in clean water on the same area. Wet the entire area. Use a clean, dry cloth to absorb the water from the carpet afterwards.
Step 5. Use alcohol if necessary
If there is any remaining hair dye, use rubbing alcohol to remove it. Pour the alcohol into a clean washcloth and dab on the stain. Repeat this process until the entire stain is removed.
Method 2 of 3: Using Ammonia Mixture
Step 1. Make an ammonia-based cleaning mixture
If dish soap, vinegar, and alcohol don't remove the dye from the carpet, make an ammonia-based cleaning mixture. Take a bowl or bucket and mix 480 ml of warm water with 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of dish soap and 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of ammonia. Open doors and windows to encourage ventilation when you use this mixture as the mixture can cause poisoning.
Step 2. Use the mixture on the stain
Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands. Dip a clean washcloth in the ammonia mixture and wring it out. After that, dab the cloth on the hair dye spill stain so that the entire stain is covered.
Step 3. Let the mixture sit on the stain for 30 minutes
Once the stain is coated with the cleaning mixture, allow the mixture to set for it to work. Set a timer or phone alarm so you can set a time limit. Keep children and pets away from the work area.
Step 4. Reapply the cleaning mixture with the sponge every 5 minutes until the stain is gone
After 30 minutes, dip a moth ball (or sponge) in the cleaning mixture. Squeeze a sponge or cloth. After that, blot it back on the stain and let the mixture sit for 5 minutes.
Step 5. Rinse the carpet with a sponge and cold water, then air dry it
Once the stain is removed, dampen a clean washcloth or sponge with water. Blot it evenly on the carpet and use another washcloth to remove any remaining moisture and stains. After that, let the carpet dry for 24 hours.
Method 3 of 3: Remove Stubborn Stains Using Hydrogen Peroxide
Step 1. Coat the stain with hydrogen peroxide using a pipette
Make sure you coat the stain thoroughly. However, don't let the hydrogen peroxide hit other parts of the carpet. If you don't have an eyedropper, you can gently apply the hydrogen peroxide to the stain using a teaspoon.
Keep in mind that hydrogen peroxide can lift the color from the carpet. Therefore, use this method as a last resort after you have tried other methods
Step 2. Allow the carpet to dry for 24 hours
Leave a layer of hydrogen peroxide on the carpet so it can lift the stain. Keep children and pets away from the work area during this time. Wait for 24 hours without touching the stain.
Step 3. Dab a damp sponge on the stain area
After 24 hours, remove the hydrogen peroxide from the carpet with water. Wet a clean sponge and gently press it against the surface of the stain. After that, dry the area that has been cleaned by aerating it.
Step 4. Repaint the faded carpet
If the hydrogen peroxide mixture causes discoloration or fading of the carpet, purchase a fabric pen or marker in a color that most closely resembles the original color of the carpet at a craft supply store. Use a pen or marker in light strokes on the faded area of the carpet until evenly distributed. After that, let the area dry for 24 hours and repaint the carpet if necessary.
