This wikiHow teaches you how to create a new line when you press the “Enter” key on Facebook Messenger, instead of sending a prewritten message. This procedure is only necessary when you are using the Facebook website because the “Enter”/” Return” buttons are separate from the “Send” button on the Facebook mobile app.

Step 1. Visit the Facebook site in a web browser
Enter the account username and password, then click “ Log in " ("Enter").
Step 2. Click Messenger
It's in the left pane below your profile photo.
Step 3. Click on an existing chat
Step 4. Enter the text in the message field
Step 5. Hold down Shift. key and press the button Enter.
The typing cursor will move to the next line and the message you have created will not be sent immediately.
- This step can also be followed in the chat window that is loaded on the main Facebook page.
- Although previously available, you cannot change the primary action for using the “Enter” key when sending messages.
- When using the Messenger mobile app, using the “Enter” or “Return” key will create a new line and the message you are currently composing will not be sent immediately because these applications have a separate “Send” or “Send” button.
