If you have tight curls and want to change your look with looser big curls, you'll need to go through several steps to change the structure of your hair. For a soft, wavy look, you can do this at home using medium heat rollers and style it while your hair is still wet. However, the results are only temporary. Changing the way you care for your hair on a daily basis can also help your curls become more wavy.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Make Wavy Hair at Home
Step 1. Prepare the equipment
If you want hair with very loose, soft wavy curls, you'll need to use heat. After showering and drying your hair, go to the bedroom. Humidity can make hair frizzy and the air in the bedroom is not as humid as in the bathroom. Prepare the following required equipment before starting:
- Heat protection product.
- Medium size hot roller. Prepare hair rollers with a minimum size of 4-5 cm to get loose and shiny curls.
- Hair dryer.
Step 2. Heat the hair roller
Plug in the device and let the rollers heat up while you prepare your hair.
Step 3. While the hair is still wet, apply a hair protection product
You can buy it at a convenience store (in the hair care section) or a beauty store. This product protects hair from damage caused by using heat-producing styling tools. Since you will be using hot rollers and a hairdryer, it is very important to protect your hair.
Skipping this step can damage your hair, especially if your hair is curly. If you don't have a heat protectant, try applying a hair serum or leave-in conditioner
Step 4. Divide the hair into four sections
You'll need to divide your hair into two sections left and right, then the top and bottom halves. Use your hands to part the hair. You will start with the hair on the left and right sides first. So, divide your hair into top and bottom sections first, then pin each section.
Step 5. Roll the top layer of hair on the right
Lift the top right layer of hair so that you get a lock of hair. Comb straight from root to tip, then place the ends of your hair on the hot rollers. Use your hands to roll your hair over the rollers, and do this until the rollers stick to your head. Tighten with tweezers so it doesn't come off.
- Try to curl your hair neatly while doing it as tightly as possible.
- Be sure not to curl too much hair on one roller. The hair you pick up should be able to fit snugly on the rollers.
Step 6. Roll the hair in the lower right layer
Lift the bottom layer of the right section of hair so that you get a lock of hair. Comb straight, then place the ends of the hair on the hot rollers. Use your hands to roll the hair over the rollers. Do this until the roller sticks to the head. Tighten with tweezers so it doesn't come off.
- Try to curl your hair neatly while doing it as tightly as possible.
- If there's excess hair that doesn't fit in the rollers, continue working until you've finished curling all the hair on the right side using the same technique.
Step 7. Roll the top layer of hair on the left
Lift the top left layer of hair so that you get a lock of hair.
Step 8. Roll the bottom layer of hair on the left
Lift the top left layer of hair so that you get a lock of hair.
- If there's excess hair that doesn't fit in the rollers, continue working until you've finished curling all the hair on the right side using the same technique.
Step 9. Roll up the front of the hair
Remove the bobby pins holding the front hairs in place. Lift the hair (just above the forehead) so that you get a lock of hair. Comb straight from root to tip, then place the ends of your hair on the hot rollers. Use your hands to roll your hair over the rollers (roll them backwards, not forwards), and do so until the rollers rest on your head. Tighten with tweezers so it doesn't come off.
Try to curl your hair neatly while doing it as tightly as possible
Step 10. Finish curling the hair at the top of the head
Lift the hair on the top of the head that has not been rolled. Comb straight from root to tip, then place the ends of your hair on the hot rollers. Use your hands to roll your hair over the rollers (roll them backwards, not forwards), and do so until the rollers stick to your head. Tighten with tweezers so it doesn't come off.
Try to curl your hair neatly while doing it as tightly as possible
Step 11. Roll the hair in the back
Remove the bobby pins holding the back of the hair and use the same technique to curl it. Take a lock of hair.
Step 12. Dry your hair with a blow dryer
Direct the hot air over the curled hair a few inches apart to help dry the hair faster. Move the dryer over the entire surface of your head to evenly dry your hair from all angles. Continue until hair is completely dry to the touch. If you remove the rollers before the hair is dry, it will curl again.
Step 13. Remove the roller
Remove the bobby pins holding the rollers and let the waves flow. Use a wide-toothed comb to style your hair the way you want and use a medium-strength hair spray to make the waves last longer.
Method 2 of 2: Creating Loose and Smoother Curls
Step 1. Use conditioner to wash your hair
Shampoo contains harsh chemicals that can strip hair of its natural oils and make it dry, frizzy and bouncy. Many people with curly hair no longer use shampoo and opt for conditioner to keep their hair shiny and soft, like waves. Conditioning your hair, otherwise known as “co-washing” is easy and will save you money by not having to buy shampoo. Here's how to wash your hair with conditioner:
- Wet hair in the shower and massage the conditioner into the scalp. Rub the scalp in a circular motion and make sure that no part is missed.
- Use your fingers to spread the conditioner all the way to the ends of your hair.
- Rinse with warm or cold water to close the cuticles so the hair doesn't stretch.
Step 2. Wash your hair less frequently
People with curly hair don't need to wash their hair as often as people with straight hair. The natural oils produced by the scalp take a long time to reach the ends of the hair. Washing your hair too often will make it dry and brittle, so your hair will be bouncy, not wavy. Reduce the frequency of washing your hair to 2 times or even once a week and you will see results.
Step 3. Use a wide-toothed comb in the bathroom
Carefully untangle the tangled hair with a wide-toothed comb. Never use a fine-toothed comb or hairbrush. A wide-toothed comb will keep the strands from separating from each other, which will result in frizzy hair.
Step 4. Pat your hair with a towel, then let it dry on its own
Instead of rubbing your hair with a towel, use a soft, fluffy towel to pat your hair down when you want to style your hair for a special occasion. If you use it too often, curly hair will be damaged.
Step 5. Use hair oil or hair straightening serum
Before your hair is completely dry, apply a small amount of hair oil, anti-frizz serum or straightening serum. Use your fingers to work it all over the hair, concentrating on the ends. Once hair is completely dry, the serum will seep into the hair fiber and hair will look smoother, shinier, and sway freely.
- Argan oil is a natural remedy that is good for people with curly hair. The oil makes hair look shiny and healthy.
- You can also try a little coconut oil (a little is enough). The oil will protect your hair and prevent it from breaking all day long.
Step 6. Sleep on a satin pillowcase
This fun solution is great for hair and skin. The cotton pillowcase absorbs moisture and oil, leaving hair dry in the morning. A satin pillowcase will make your curls look loose and beautiful, uncluttered and bouncy.
Step 7. Consider straightening your hair
If you really want wavy, not curly hair, you can ask a professional to chemically straighten your hair. That way, you will get the look you want. However, this is not a long-term solution because if you do it too often, the chemicals will damage your hair.
- When straightening hair, chemicals are applied to the hair so that the hair becomes permanently straight. You can also make your hair permanently wavy as you wish; You can choose tighter or looser waves.
- Make sure you consult a professional stylist with experience with very frizzy hair.
Step 8. Done
Now you can flaunt your beautiful wavy hair.
Tips
- Read the label on the product you buy! Some note that the product is heat activated. That means you have to blow dry your hair for the product to work.
- Try not to wet your hair too often. When wet, hair tends to shrink. However, after drying for a long time, the hair will slowly become limp and become more wavy, less frizzy.
- The hair tie does not automatically tangle. Learn the different ways to care for and style it, and make sure to untangle it!
- Before going to bed, make lots of braids and tie them. In the morning, after waking up, you can remove the braid and the hair will be wavy.
- You just need to braid your hair overnight and put it to sleep. In the morning, you will get wavy hair.
- You can also try other methods. Make sure your hair is very damp. Before going to bed, straighten your hair. Tie your hair into a loose ponytail and go to sleep. When you wake up, turn the curling iron on to its highest temperature. Roll the hair a little at a time (just 5 cm at a time). Use hair spray that can make hair shiny while protecting and hydrating after the curling process.
- If you only wash your hair with conditioner, over time it will dry out and lose its shine. So, it is recommended to wash it with shampoo once a week.
Warning
- Don't wet your hair before straightening it.
- Hair straighteners can burn hair if used incorrectly. So you should read all the instructions carefully before starting to use it.
