Step
Part 1 of 5: Using Curlers and a Sasak Comb
Step 1. Trim hair with a comb, then part hair to make it easier to style
You can divide your hair into sections according to their thickness. However, splitting the hair into 2 sections may be enough. Part your hair into 2 sections (top and bottom are usually easier to style), tie one section and set it aside.
You can also part your hair to the right and left if you like. Although splitting the hair up and down will usually be easier to put together later
Step 2. Holding the curling iron with opposite hands, wrap a section of hair around the tool
The thickness of the part of the hair that is wrapped should be about 2.5 cm. Make sure your hair stays flat and doesn't twist while you wind it in the curling iron.
Leave 2.5-5 cm of hair straight while the rest is wavy. That way, the results will look more natural
Step 3. Change the tilt of the curler to change the result
You may want to adjust the density of the waves in your hair according to your desired result. The way you hold the curling iron will determine how wavy or curly your hair looks. You can even try 2-3 ways to create a texture in your hair that will make it look more natural. For example:
- Tilt the curling iron up as you wind your hair to create looser curls.
- Tilt the tool down to create tighter curls.
- Tilt the sharp tool down, almost vertically to create even tighter curls.
- Twist the hair as you wrap it around the tool so that it is even tighter to create very tight curls.
Step 4. Comb your hair briefly after you're done curling it to make it look more wavy
Use a comb or hairbrush to loosen the lower sections of your hair for a soft, wavy look that's less "curly".
Step 5. Spray a little hairspray on a hair brush, then move it up and down your hair
This step will make the waves in your hair look beautiful. Comb the hair little by little, bobbing up and down, adding more hairspray if necessary.
Step 6. Spray hairspray onto hair to keep it in shape, and you're good to go
This is all you need to do. Try using the curling iron and comb in a variety of ways to get the look that works best for you.
Part 2 of 5: Squeezing Hair
Step 1. Prepare the diffuser funnel to attach to the hairdryer
Most hair dryers are equipped with a diffuser funnel that can be attached and removed. This diffusing funnel will radiate heat over a wider area of your hair, instead of just spraying it in one direction. This tool can help create wavy but not frizzy hair.
Choose a circular diffuser funnel that is concave in the middle, and not flat like a duck's snout. A funnel shape like this is the best option because it will help curly hair dry in a more natural shape once it's affixed with a round funnel and dried in its natural "clump."
Step 2. Wash your hair before squeezing it
You should wash your hair this way, as the hair will be dried from a wet state using a diffuser to curly. Generally, wavy hair is also dry. You can buy moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to wash your hair. However, you can also use any shampoo that suits your hair.
- Consider cleaning your hair with a no poo, low poo, or just conditioner instead of shampoo. No poo or low poo is a shampoo that does not contain detergent. The detergents and sulfates contained in regular shampoo can dry out the cuticles and cause frizz, many people with naturally curly hair start cleaning their hair without shampoo.
- Choose a shampoo that doesn't contain sulfates if you want to stick with it. Sulfates are cleaning agents that can dry out hair, and make wavy hair look messy.
Step 3. Use a towel or leave your hair damp
Wait until your hair is damp before proceeding to the next step. If you want to avoid frizz, use a soft microfiber towel or a soft t-shirt and pat your hair to remove any excess water.
- Use a soft towel and pat it at the roots of your hair first.
- Part your hair and pat a towel over the wet area.
- Leave your hair in for about half an hour or so until it's more damp and less wet when you start using the blow dryer. Alternatively, you can also wrap a soft towel around your head for 15-20 minutes to absorb any remaining water from your hair.
- Don't squeeze your hair too hard or rub the towel into your hair too hard, as this can damage it. Hair that is still wet is more prone to breakage, so be careful when handling wet hair, and don't pull it unnecessarily.
Step 4. Apply the product to the hair surface
Apply mousse, gel or hair cream of your choice. You can also use a heat protectant spray or cream to protect it from heat damage. If your natural hair is wavy, chances are your hair is dry too, and a thick, moisturizing hair cream might work.
- Rub the cream or mousse into your palms, but don't apply from the roots to the hair. Simply squeeze the hair gently into sections from bottom to top with your palms to evenly distribute the cream onto the natural sections of the hair. If you have short hair, do the same and cover the curls, or those that will be curled from above by squeezing the hair with product-coated hands. This technique can help create a curly look that expands and doesn't appear to fall off.
- If your natural hair is dry, avoid styling products that contain alcohol as they will dry out your hair even more.
Step 5. Squeeze the hair into sections
Flip the hair from top to bottom, and use a diffusing funnel to dry the hair while styling it with the other hand. Aim the dryer from below, not from above. Take a section of hair, stick it with a diffuser funnel. The hair should start forming natural waves with the help of the heat in the diffuser. After that, remove the hair with the diffuser, and with the palm of your hand forming a claw, take the section of hair and gently squeeze it from the bottom. While kneading the hair by hand, try to direct the blow dryer into the crevices of your fingers.
Remove the hair when most of it has dried, and repeat for the other section. Continue kneading part by part of the hair, blow-drying the hair completely until it is about 90% dry. Then, let your hair dry completely by blowing cool air into the waves
Step 6. Blow cool air into the hair waves
Set your hairdryer to cool, and air dry your hair for 30 seconds to 1 minute to help stabilize your hairstyle. Most hair dryers have a cool temperature option, or have a button that you can press to release cool air. The cold air will help lock the hair cuticles so that the wavy shape can be maintained.
Step 7. Spray lightly hairspray onto wavy hair
Turn your head and spray hairspray to maintain the finished wave. Use your claw-like hands and squeeze the hair upwards in sections to help hold it in shape. You should use a low, flexible, or medium hold hairspray to keep your hair from looking stiff and hard. Flip the hair back and style it however you want.
- Leave about 15 cm between your hair and the hairspray bottle so you don't spray it too close to your head.
- There are hairspray products that can strengthen and make hair more shiny without making it heavy. Dove and Garnier have hairspray products that are lightweight, moisture-resistant, and can make hair shiny, which will maintain the waves in your hair.
Part 3 of 5: Braiding Hair
Step 1. Wash your hair and apply conditioner before going to bed
In this way, your hair should be damp because the braid will be left overnight while you sleep to create wavy hair. Wash your hair as usual before braiding it.
Step 2. Allow hair to dampen
Your hair should be damp before braiding so it will dry overnight. Do not let the hair too dry, because it will not be too wavy.
Step 3. Part your hair into 5 or 7.5 cm wide sections, then pin them up
Starting on the right or left side of your head, use bobby pins or a hair tie to part your hair into 5 or 7.5 cm wide sections. Once the top ends of your hair are pinned, slide them in succession from one side of your head to the other until all of your hair is pinned. Continue by creating a second row below it. Then continue until the hair on half of your head is divided.
Step 4. Braid each section of hair
For maximum wavy hair, make a french braid. However, you can also braid as usual to make it wavy. Start at the roots of your hair, divide into 3, and braid all the way to the ends. Braid all the way to the ends of your hair, then tie with an elastic but not rubber band if you have one.
Step 5. Leave the braided hair, then sleep
For some people, braided hair will dry within 6 hours. Get plenty of sleep when you want to make your hair wavy this way, especially if you have thick hair. If your hair is still wet in the morning, you can use a tool to dry the braids. Just be careful because using a blow dryer can make your hair tangle. So, you should let the hair braid dry naturally.
Step 6. Remove the braid in the morning
Remove the braids one at a time, starting from one side of the head and then working the other way. Let the hair loose gently and comb it gently. Keep the waves in your hair, don't run your fingers roughly through them.
Step 7. Change the position of the hair to style it according to taste
Use your fingers to smooth and grow your hair to your liking. Gently smooth out the tangled hair with your fingers. However, do not use a comb as this can damage the waves and make them tangle.
Part 4 of 5: Putting Up Little Hair
Step 1. Wash your hair before putting it in a bun
Your hair will need to be damp to make it wavy this way because the little buns will be left on overnight. You can also use a spray bottle to moisturize your hair instead of having to wash it.
Step 2. Make sure your hair is completely damp
Dry off any excess water before bundling your hair. Your hair should be moderately damp, but no longer wet and dripping. Hair that is too wet won't dry overnight.
Step 3. Part your hair into 7, 5-10 cm thick sections
Smaller sections of hair will create smaller buns and tighter waves, while larger sections will create looser waves. Choose a style you like, or combine several styles and create tight waves in the front and loose waves in the back. Part the hair in succession and pin it into sections 7.5-10 cm thick in a row from left to right. Then, continue to make the second row under the first row until it reaches the base of the head, and the hair is on the sides of the head as usual.
- When you're done making little buns on one side of your head, move to the other side of your head and part your hair in succession again.
- Parting your hair like this will create more regular waves. If you want a more random look, you can make a random bun on your head too.
Step 4. Twist each section of hair into a coil, and pin it together at the top of your head
Just like making a regular bun, twist sections of hair all the way to the ends. Once twisted, make a circular coil with the hair on your scalp so that it overlaps. Place bobby pins or hair ties (not rubber bands) on either side of the bun to keep it in place.
Step 5. Repeat steps 5 to 7 on the rest of the hair until you're done in a bun
Ask friends or family to help you attach hair clips to the bun at the back of your head. If no one is there to help, part your hair at the back and bring it forward so that it is on either side of your head. Use two mirrors to help attach the pins and place the bun if you're also making a bun at the back of your head.
Step 6. Leave the bun and sleep
Depending on hair type, the bun will dry in at least 6 hours for most people. Sleep long enough in a bun overnight to create wavy hair, especially if you have thick hair.
Step 7. Remove the bun in the morning
Starting at the back, carefully remove the hairpins from each bun. Release sequentially forward until completely released. Let the hair loose gently by shaking your head to loosen the twist or gently touching it. Just don't brush your hair with your fingers too much if you don't want the waves to break.
Step 8. Trim the hair with your fingers
Use your fingers to loosen the waves and gently smooth the curls. Try not to use a comb because your hair will look tangled.
Step 9. Consider applying a light hairspray to your hair
Spray hairspray several times with a distance of about 30 cm from your head. Furthermore, you can also use your palms like claws and squeeze sections of hair to help maintain the waves.
Part 5 of 5: Bearing Up As One
Step 1. Wash your hair before putting it in a bun
Or spray water into the middle and ends of your hair until it's damp. Your hair must be damp to make it wavy this way as it will have to dry during the bun and form waves.
Step 2. Dry your hair roots with a blow dryer, but leave the ends and the middle part still damp
Point the hair dryer at the top of your head and dry the hair roots there. Next, pull a section of hair sideways and dry the hair roots in that section. Keep the ends and middle of your hair damp.
Step 3. Part the hair at the back of the head and twist the two together
You don't have to split the hair evenly, just grab about half of the hair with both hands. Twist each side of the hair in one direction all the way to the roots. If you want to create inward waves, twist the right side of the hair counterclockwise and the left side clockwise. If you want to create an outward wave, twist both sides of your hair the other way around.
Step 4. Twist the two sides of the hair together
Once the hair is twisted at the roots, unite and twist the two strands of hair until it looks like a braid. Continue braiding your hair down your neck to the ends. Your hair should now be twisted together. Be sure to hold on tight to the ends of the strands so they don't fall off.
Step 5. Twist your hair into a bun at the back of your head
Wrap the twisted hair into a tight coil at the back of your head. Your bun should be at the back of your head slightly above the nape of your neck. Keep the bun in position with a hair tie or a few bobby pins.
Step 6. Leave the bun until your hair is dry
The time it takes your hair to dry may vary according to its thickness. For people with short and thin hair, it may take only a few hours. Meanwhile, for people with thick hair, it may take all day.
Step 7. Remove the bun and style your hair
Gently remove the hair from the back of the head. Don't pull it too hard. Style your hair to your liking with your fingers. Don't use a comb or comb your fingers too much, as touching your hair will make the waves fall apart.
