You may think that only long hair can be made curly or wavy, when in fact this hairstyle can be made on short hair. Wavy hair will look bouncy, textured, and stylish, and may change the way you normally look with straight hair. There are several ways that you can use to make short wavy hair, including using a flat iron, or styling wet hair to make it wavy. If you're using a tool, the trick is to curl your hair first and then comb it to loosen it up and make it wavy.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Getting Ready
Step 1. Shampoo
If you've washed your hair in the last 24 hours, you don't need to wash it again. However, make sure your hair is still clean and not greasy, limp, or exposed to hair styling products.
If you have short hair, be sure to use only a small amount of shampoo. Using too much shampoo can make your hair limp and dry
Step 2. Dry the hair
Every time you style your hair with a heating device such as a vise, make sure your hair is completely dry. You can let your hair dry on its own or blow dry it with a tool.
- Always apply mousse, spray, or heat protectant to your hair every time you use a heating device such as a hairdryer or straightener.
- To make your hair more bouncy, lower your head and let your hair fall down while blow drying.
Step 3. Choose a vise tool
A flat iron or straightener is actually a very good tool for creating short wavy hair. You just have to choose the right tool. Otherwise, you run the risk of damaging your hair.
- Choose a vise made of 100% ceramic or titanium-coated as these two materials will produce the most even heat.
- Make sure the vise you are using has a temperature gauge. Otherwise, your hair is at risk of being damaged or even burnt by the high temperatures (though the low temperature option in the straightener is usually too low to be effective).
- Look for a vise with a beveled or curved edge instead of a square. The rounded tip of the vise will help create smoother waves.
- You can also use curling irons to create wavy hair, the process is not much different.
Step 4. Heat the vise first
Set the temperature of the vise to 150 degrees Celsius and allow it to heat up to that temperature. Never set the temperature of the vise above 200 degrees Celsius.
Part 2 of 3: Creating Wavy Hair with a Straightener
Step 1. Part hair into 3 sections
You'll find it easier to style your hair by dividing it into top, middle, and bottom sections first. If your hair is too short to pin or tie, just use a few small bobby pins to hold it in place.
- Start by combing your hair with a wide-toothed comb. Tie two of the three sections of hair and start styling the bottom section.
- If there are sections of hair that are too short to curl with a flat iron (less than 2 cm, for example), try tossing them slightly to make them more fluffy and then switch to sections with longer hair.
Step 2. Use a small flat iron (1.5 cm wide) to curl your hair
Start the curl from the hair at the very bottom. Part the hair into smaller sections, which are about 2 cm. If you curl your hair more, the pattern you get will not be very clear.
- Take 2 cm of hair starting from the part that frames the face. Hold the straightener vertically and clip it to the hair near the scalp.
- Rotate the vise 180 degrees toward the back of your head then gently pull it down while keeping the plates together. Using a straightener to curl your hair may sound awkward, but the principle is similar to bending a ribbon with scissors.
- When you get to the ends of your hair, take a moment to see if you manage to curl your hair. If not, repeat this step on the same section of hair until it curls.
- If you are satisfied with the result, let the section cool and continue curling the next section. Repeat the same process.
Step 3. Use a curling iron with a smaller rod instead of a vise
Smaller curling irons can also be used. In addition, you can also use the ends of the larger curling iron. If you are using a curling iron instead of a vise, hold the bar vertically while pointing the tip downward.
- Starting at about 2 cm from your scalp, wrap your hair around the curling iron as much as you want. However, for short hair, you may only be able to wind the hair 1 or 2 times.
- Hold the ends of the hair while curling for 2-5 seconds.
- Remove the ends of the hair and tools. Allow the curled hair to cool and move on to the next section.
- Be sure to wind the hair in different directions on the appliance. That way, you can make the result look more fluffy and full.
Step 4. Repeat the same process on all sections of hair
After curling the entire bottom section of your hair, allow it to cool and repeat the process. That way, the curled hair can be really cool as long as you continue to curl the next section.
For the top hair, part as usual before curling
Step 5. Comb the hair with your fingers to change it from curly to wavy
After curling the entire section of hair and allowing it to cool and firm, it's time to loosen and separate it with your fingers. This step will turn tight curls into loose, wavy hair.
- While brushing your hair with your fingers, also apply a product that maintains a wavy pattern, such as wax or pomade. However, only use this product sparingly, especially if you have short hair. Using too many products will only make your hair limp.
- You can also apply texturizing spray or hairspray near the hair roots under the curly hair layer. This product will make your short hair look much more bouncy.
Part 3 of 3: Make Hair Wavy Without Heat
Step 1. Shampoo or wet hair
Once your hair is clean, you don't need to shampoo again. Just use a shower head or spray bottle to slightly dampen your hair. Don't get your hair wet. You just need to make it slightly damp so it can maintain the wavy shape.
Dry your hair with a soft, highly absorbent towel and then blow it dry until it's slightly damp
Step 2. Decide on a wavy hairstyle without heat
There are three ways you can make wavy hair without heat: a bun, a braid, or a twist braid. However, with hair that is too short, you cannot use this method. The minimum length of hair for a braid is 8 cm, while in order to be in a bun, your hair must be even longer. In all three of these methods, you'll need to style your hair, wrap it in a scarf, and let it dry overnight to make it look wavy. While it can also be used for short hair, your hair should be long enough to be braided or twisted several times.
Braids will produce the tightest curls, twist braids will produce looser curls, and buns will produce the loosest wavy hair
Step 3. Style the hair to make it wavy
Once you've decided what method you want to use, you can start twisting, braiding, or bunting your hair. Make sure your hair is slightly damp while doing this step.
- Braiding hair: for tight wavy hair, make a medium or small braid. Meanwhile, for looser wavy hair, part your hair into 6 sections and then make a large braid.
- Make 2 twisted braids: part the hair in the middle of the head. Take two sections of hair on the left side of the front of the head. Twist the hair, and while twisting, add hair from the front of the head. Continue twisting the hair while continuing to add hair from the front of the head. Repeat twisting until all the hair on the left side of the head is used up then tie the ends with an elastic band. Repeat the same way on the right side of the head. You may only be able to twist your hair a few times according to your hair length.
- Make 2 buns: part the hair in the middle of the head. Gather all the hair on the left side by making a ponytail at the bottom left of the head. Twist all the hair on that side and then wrap it around the ponytail to form a bun. Tie or use hair clips to hold it in place. Repeat the same way for the hair on the right side. If your hair is too short that you can't put it back in a bun, make it a bun on either side of your head.
Step 4. Wrap the hair
Using a soft scarf or scarf, wrap all of your hair so it doesn't come into contact with the pillows and sheets while you sleep. The scarf will also prevent the hair from slipping out of the bun and eventually tangling.
You can tie the scarf or attach an elastic to keep it in place
Step 5. Let hair dry overnight
As long as you let your hair dry in any of the above styles, your hair will form long-lasting waves or curls. The result is the look of wavy hair even without using heat.
You don't have to leave your hair on overnight. However, you will still have to wait a few hours for your hair to dry if you use this method during the day
Step 6. Unravel the hair
Once your hair is completely dry in the morning, remove the scarf and elastic and let your hair down. Gently comb your hair with your fingers to style it the way you want.
