Method 3 of 3: Writing Good Comments
Step 1. Learn the YouTube community rules
YouTube's community rules prohibit nudity/sexual, violent/vulgar, hateful, spam, harmful/harmful content, threats, and content that does not violate copyright. For comments, the relevant prohibitions include hate comments, threats, and spam.
Step 2. Think about why you commented on the video in question
What is your goal in commenting on the video? Did the video inspire you? Did the video make you laugh? Do you feel the video creator missed something and could improve the quality of the content? Would you like to start a discussion thread? Instead of being noticed, your account can be blocked if you leave a rude or “uncontained” comment so think about your comments before uploading them.
For example, maybe you watch dance tutorial videos for beginners on YouTube. Maybe you are a beginner dancer and even though the video tutorial is made for an audience like you, the dance is still too difficult. You can explain to the teacher in the video that the dance is still quite difficult to learn
Step 3. Read other comments to avoid unnecessary comments
Before commenting on a video, go through as many comments as you can to make sure you don't repeat what others have already discussed.
If you find a comment that matches what you want to say, try liking it (click the “thumbs up” icon below the comment) and/or replying to the comment instead of uploading a new comment
Step 4. Show respect
If you don't like a particular video, it's okay to express your dislike. However, make sure you speak it politely. If your first response after watching the video was “Wow! So bad! This video is just a waste of time!”, why waste more time commenting on it? If you do have to comment on a video, determine what makes you hate the video, and offer suggestions for making the video better.
- Avoid comments like “What a bad teaching style! Waste of time! Study first to be a good teacher!!!!”
- Try using comments like “Thanks for making this tutorial! I'm still a beginner and even though this video is made for beginners, I'm still having a hard time. Apparently, it would be better if this dance was divided into more segments with several repetitions at the end of each segment. At the end of the video, instead of going straight into the dance complete with music, it would be better if the dance was tried twice at a slower tempo and without music."
Step 5. Add something to the conversation
Ideally, social media is a place to share ideas and build connections. If the only comment you have is “Duh! So ugly!”, you won't be helping anyone or adding any topic to the conversation. The video may be ridiculous or ugly. If that's what the video is and you need to comment on it, try to make comments that are informative, supportive, or (at least) witty.
- In the example of comments on dance tutorial videos, users have made informative comments by offering suggestions for video creators to improve the quality of their content. Ideally, video creators will consider these suggestions for future video tutorials.
- For additional help, commenters can share links to other dance tutorial videos that they find more helpful (if any).
Step 6. Leave a short comment
YouTube comments have an unlimited character count. However, that does not mean that you can write essays. The longer your comment, the less likely someone will read it. Try to keep comments as short as possible, while still showing respect and keeping their informative side.
Step 7. Avoid using capital letters
Typing in all capital letters is tantamount to screaming online. When your entire comment is typed in capital letters, people will not take you seriously. They may even make fun of you for your inability to speak or type properly.
Tips
-
You can format YouTube captions to be bold, italic, or strikethrough:
- Comments with text thick or bold is made by placing an asterisk (*) at the end of the side of the text (eg *this text will be bolded*).
- Italicized comment text is created by placing an underscore (_) at both ends of the text (i.e. _this text will be italicized_).
- Strikethrough text is created by placing a hyphen (-) at both ends (e.g. -this text is crossed out-).
- Promotions for your own YouTube channel or other services (e.g. your website) in comments are generally less favorable. In addition, your comments may be reported as spam.
