Bookmarks, which store web addresses for later access, are especially useful if you can find them. However, many internet users save bookmarks and then forget them, so they have too many bookmarks. Google Chrome has a trick to make it easier for you to manage your bookmarks, though it will still take you quite a bit of time to actually sort through them all.

Step

Method 1 of 4: Using Bookmarks Manager

Step 1. Use Bookmarks Manager to display all bookmarks on one page

This is the easiest way to set up your bookmarks and bookmarks directory, without having to use various menus. Bookmarks Manager lets you manage bookmarks, create and manage directories, rename or edit bookmarks, and search all links.

Make sure you have the latest version of Bookmarks Manager by accessing "About Google Chrome" (URL: chrome://chrome/). If Bookmarks Manager has not been updated, an automatic update will start from that page

Step 2. Click the three gray lines in the top right corner of Chrome to adjust the settings

A white menu starting with New Tab will appear.

The icon is also known as the "Hamburger Icon"

Step 3. Click Bookmarks

A second menu will appear, with several options at the top of the screen and all of your bookmarks below it. From here, you can view and make basic settings for your bookmarks.

  • Click “Bookmark this page” to add the currently open page to the bookmark. “Bookmark all Open Pages” will add bookmarks for all open tabs.
  • Click “Show Bookmark Bar” to show bookmarks as buttons below the search bar.
  • Click and drag bookmarks to rearrange bookmarks, or place bookmarks in a directory.
  • Right-click the link to edit, rename, or copy and paste the bookmark.

Step 4. Select Bookmark Manager to control overall bookmarks

The Bookmark Manager page allows you to easily edit your bookmarks. The bookmarks will appear as a list in the middle of the page, and the entire bookmarks directory will appear in the bar on the left of the screen. Double-clicking a bookmark will open the link in a new tab, and clicking a directory will display the bookmarks in that directory.

Step 5. Notice that Chrome sorts all bookmarks into 2-3 directories automatically

Look at the directory on the left of the screen. Generally, you'll find "children" directories, i.e. directories within directories. All of your bookmarks will be set to one of the three major directories. The bookmark directories are:

  • Bookmarks Bar:

This directory is used to store the most popular bookmarks. Bookmarks in this directory will appear in the bookmarks bar at the top of your Chrome screen.

  • Other Bookmarks:

Bookmarks that are not in the Bookmarks Bar will go to this directory.

  • Mobile Bookmarks:

If you connect your Google account to your phone and computer, this directory will display the bookmarks you saved on your phone's Chrome.

Step 6. Click and drag the bookmark or directory to move it

Organizing bookmarks via Bookmarks Manager is easy -- you just have to click on a link, hold down your mouse, and drag it to the desired directory. Release the mouse to drop the marker.

Step 7. Click "Folder▼" or "Organize▼" to add a bookmark or directory

Clicking a word at the top of Bookmark Manager will display a menu that will allow you to add a new link or directory. You will be asked to name the bookmark and enter a link, or choose a destination directory. Once your changes are saved, you can still move bookmarks and directories by dragging and dropping them.

You can also undo changes from this menu

Step 8. Right-click the link or directory to rename it

You can also edit links, or copy and paste your bookmarks anywhere. Right-click the bookmark and select Edit Bookmark/Folder to add a description, change the URL, or rename the link.

Step 9. Use the search bar to search for bookmarks, including the content of the bookmarks

This is the best feature of Chrome's bookmark manager -- the search bar reads the title of the bookmark and the body of the page, so you can perform a search. For example, if you add some bookmarks on the best Indonesian films, and want to know if "Arisan!" is in the list, you can search by title without having to click on the bookmarks one by one.

This search feature can also be used as a feature to organize bookmarks. You can search for bookmarks with specific keywords, then group the results

Method 2 of 4: Setting Bookmarks in Directory

The bookmarks bar below the search bar contains a collection of links, making it easier for you to find them. You can quickly add a link to your bookmarks bar by clicking the little icon to the left of "http" and dragging it to the bar below the URL. If the bookmarks bar doesn't appear:

  • Click the three dark lines in the upper-right corner of the Chrome window.
  • Click Bookmarks.
  • Click Show bookmarks bar.
  • You can also press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+B to display the bookmarks bar.

Step 3. Use the directory to collect similar bookmarks

The key to keeping your bookmarks tidy is directories, as they save you the hassle and help you find your bookmarks quickly. To create a bookmarks directory, right-click the bookmarks bar and select “Add Folder…” You will see a window that will allow you to name and locate the directory. Some examples of directories include:

  • Journey
  • Work
  • Fun blog
  • Child
  • Game
  • Finance
  • Project

Step 4. Create subdirectories to further organize the directory, especially if you have many bookmark directories

For example, if you have a "Jobs" directory, you can create "Research", "Projects" and "Finance" subdirectories to organize your bookmarks more effectively. To create a subdirectory, click "Add Folder…", then select a destination directory.

To add a bookmark to a subdirectory, find the subdirectory in the "Add Bookmark" window, or click and drag the bookmark to the appropriate directory. Hover over the top directory until the directory opens, then drop the bookmark to the appropriate subdirectory

Step 5. Download the bookmark manager extension to set up bookmarks automatically

Apps for Chrome, or extensions, are additional features that you can use to customize Chrome to your liking. To download the bookmarks manager extension, visit the Chrome Web Store and look for “Bookmark Organizer” in the top-left corner of the site.

  • Make sure you click the box labeled "Extensions" below the search box.
  • Some of the most popular bookmark manager extensions include SuperSorter, Sprucemarks, and Chrome Bookmark Manager. You can use the extension to manage bookmarks, remove excess bookmarks, and create directories.

Step 1. If you can't see your bookmarks, make sure you're signed in to your Google account by clicking Sign in in the top right corner of Bookmark Manager

Chrome remembers the bookmarks in your user account, and brings them to every computer you use. If you're signed into your account on Chrome, you'll be able to see your bookmarks in Bookmarks Manager.

Step 3. If you can't share your bookmarks with others, your bookmarks directory might be set as a private directory

While you can't change the privacy of the bookmarks directory, you can create a new public directory and drag bookmarks into that new directory. After that, you can click “Share this Folder” from Bookmarks Manager.

Note that bookmarks directories will be marked as private directories when they are in a private directory
