Showing the Bookmarks Bar (bookmark bar) in Chrome is not difficult. By using a keyboard shortcut or opening the Chrome menu, you can display the Bookmarks Bar. Also, you can open the Chrome menu to access the "Bookmark Manager" to quickly and easily view your bookmarks collection.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using the Bookmarks Bar
Step 1. Show Bookmarks Bar
Press Ctrl + Shift + B if you are using a Windows-based computer or press Commandl + Shift + B if you are using a Mac. The Bookmarks bar will appear horizontally below the URL field (address bar).
As an alternative, you can press the Chrome menu button (the button with three vertical dots) and select " Bookmarks " → "Show bookmarks bar" (Show Bookmarks Bar)
Step 2. Open bookmarks
Your first few bookmarks will appear as buttons on the Bookmarks Bar. Click the » button to the right of the Bookmarks Bar to view other bookmarks in the drop-down menu.
Step 3. Right-click the bookmark to see more options
The following options are available: " Open in a new tab " (Open New Tab), " Edit " (to change the name or URL address of the bookmark), "Delete" (Delete), and other options. In addition, you can also left-click and drag the bookmark to change its position on the Bookmarks Bar.
To right-click on a Mac using a mouse that has only one button, press and hold the " Control " key as you click. When using a trackpad, you can right-click by tapping the trackpad with two fingers. However, only a few laptops have this trackpad feature
Step 4. Create a new directory (folder)
After opening the Bookmarks Manager, press the button in the upper-right corner of the window. After that, select the option "Add new folder" (Add Folder) on the drop-down menu and then the new directory will appear on the Bookmarks Bar. Click and drag the bookmark to add it to the directory.
When you save a web page as a bookmark, you can choose a directory that has been created as a place to save the bookmark. You can select the directory from the " Folder " drop-down menu in the " Bookmarks " window that appears when you use the "Bookmark this page…" option
Step 5. Open all the bookmarks stored in the directory
Right-click the directory and select "Open All Bookmarks" to open all the bookmarks stored in that directory. You can also open bookmarks that are not stored in the directory by right-clicking the "Bookmarks bar" and selecting the "Open all bookmarks" option. Also, you can open bookmarks stored in the "Other Bookmarks" directory by right-clicking this directory and selecting the "Open all bookmarks" option.
Method 2 of 3: Organizing Entire Bookmarks
Step 1. Upgrade Google Chrome
It is highly recommended that you upgrade Google Chrome. From late 2014 to June 2015, Chrome experimented with overhauling the appearance of Bookmark Manager and replacing it with a visual, tiled interface. If you haven't updated Chrome since that time, the instructions listed below will not apply to your browser.
- If you prefer a visual interface system, install the "Bookmark Manager" extension available on the Chrome Web Store.
- Apart from temporary changes in appearance, the features and usage of Bookmark Manager have remained the same since the redesign of Bookmark Manager in 2010 (version 5) and bug fixes in 2011 (version 15).
Step 2. Open Bookmark Manager
Press Ctrl + Option + B for Windows, or press Command + Option + B for Mac. The Bookmarks Manager in a new tab will open.
You can also open Bookmark Manager by clicking the Chrome menu button in the upper right of the window, selecting the " Bookmarks " option in the drop-down menu, and clicking the "Bookmark Manager" option. Additionally, you can also right-click the Bookmarks Bar and select the "Bookmark manager" option from the drop-down menu
Step 3. Organize bookmarks
Click the Bookmarks Bar directory in the left-hand side of the window. Drag the bookmarks to the right of the window to arrange them however you want. In addition, you can also drag rarely used bookmarks to the "Other bookmarks" directory. This directory will only appear in the Chrome bar if it loads bookmarks.
Step 4. Create a new directory
After opening the Bookmarks Manager, click the button to the right of the window. After that, select the "Add new folder" option and then a new directory will appear within the directory you selected. Drag the bookmarks into the directory and arrange them the way you want.
All bookmarks and directories will appear in the "Bookmarks Bar" or "Other Bookmarks" directory. You cannot delete or rename this main directory
Step 5. Arrange the directories alphabetically
Select the directory in the left-hand side of the window. After that, click the button at the top right of the window. Select the "Sort by name" (Reorder by title) option to sort all bookmarks stored in the directory alphabetically.
Method 3 of 3: Using Bookmarks on Mobile
Step 1. Find the " Bookmarks" menu
The mobile version of Chrome does not provide a browser bar. To view bookmarks, tap the button at the top right of the screen and select the " Bookmarks " option.
Step 2. Place the bookmarks in the directory
Tap and hold the bookmark you want to move. Once highlighted, select the other bookmarks you want to move as well. Tap the directory icon with an arrow in the top right of the screen. After that select the directory where you want to save the bookmarks.
Step 3. Sync your bookmarks with other devices
As long as you use the same Google account on each device, you can automatically sync your bookmarks with the Chrome app installed on all of your devices. Here's a quick guide to syncing bookmarks:
- After opening Chrome, click the button at the top right of the screen and select the "Settings" option.
- For the mobile version of Chrome, tap your Google account name and select "Sync" to open the sync settings. If you want to sync only some data, disable the "Sync everything" option. After that, check the box next to the type of data you want to share to sync it with other devices.
- For the computer version of Chrome, click the "Sync" option in the "Settings" menu. After that, select the type of data you want to share.
- Repeat all these steps for each device you want to sync.
Step 4. Display bookmarks as a list
If you want to display your bookmarks as a list instead of icons, try following these steps:
- Enter the text "chrome://flags/#enable-new-ntp" into the URL field.
- Change the "Default" option to "Enable" (Enabled).
- Move the menu down and press the "Relaunch now" button to close and reopen the browser and change settings.
- Note: All options available on the " flags " page are experimental. These options will change frequently and disappear. If the "enable new ntp" option is not available on your version of Chrome, these steps will not work.
Tips
- If you want to display your bookmarks as a column placed on the left side of the screen like other browsers, open a new Chrome window and select Bookmark Manager. Reduce the width of this window to form a narrow column. After that, place the window to the left of the screen. Slightly reduce the width of the browser window so that it can be placed to the right of the new window containing the bookmark.
- A new window containing bookmarks will continue to show the Bookmarks Bar, even if it is hidden in settings.
