Firefox is a great web browser that makes surfing the web fast and fun, as well as having the function of collecting bookmarks as you surf. We'll show you how easy it is to clean and organize all your bookmarks with these simple steps.
Step
Step 1. Start Firefox
If this browser is not on your desktop or dock, please look for it in your Start menu (Windows) or in the Applications Folder (Macintosh).
Step 2. Click on the View menu on your menu bar
choose Sidebar, then Bookmarks.
- A sidebar will appear to the left of the Firefox window.
- You will see at least 3 icons: Bookmarks Toolbar, Bookmarks Menu, and Unsorted Bookmarks.
- Bookmarks Toolbar is the field below your address bar. Feel free to use this toolbar for websites you visit frequently, so you don't have to go to great lengths to find them.
- The Bookmarks Menu is the first thing you see when you click on the Bookmarks menu, and it's likely where most of your bookmarks are stored.
Step 3. Add bookmarks into Bookmarks Toolbar
This will make it easier for you to quickly and easily access the websites you visit frequently.
- From the bookmarks you have collected, drag 5 of your favorite bookmarks into the Bookmarks Toolbar folder. You can add more if you want, but the most efficient way to use the Bookmarks Toolbar is to limit it to sites you visit frequently.
- Add the folder to the Bookmarks Toolbar. If you frequently visit several related sites, save them in one folder, then drag them to the Bookmarks Toolbar folder. This will save space on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Menu options Open All in Tabs will open all the bookmarks in the folder at once in separate tabs.
Step 4. Create a folder
To manage your other bookmarks, create a storage system. What's likely happening is that, even though you have a lot of bookmarks, you have a small number of categories for them. We will create a category in the Bookmarks Menu folder. Some examples for your category folder names are:
- Entertainment
- News
- Computer
- Children
- Shopping
- Tool
- Sport
- Journey
Step 5. Create a new folder
Right-click on the Bookmarks Menu folder (or press Control while clicking). From the menu that appears, select New Folders…
Step 6. Name the folder
In the New Folder window, type a name for the folder, and if you wish, a description or memo about the contents of the folder. The new folder will appear in the sidebar below the folder you clicked on earlier.
Repeat this step until you are satisfied enough for your bookmark storage system. Remember, you can always add more folders
Step 7. Move your old bookmarks into the new folder
Now it's time to sort through your stack of bookmarks and decide which bookmarks fit into which folder.
If you find a bookmark that fits into more than one category, put it in the first category you think fits
Step 8. Select the source folder
Click on the folder that holds your bookmarks.
Step 9. Move a bookmark into a new folder
Click on the bookmark you want to move and drag it into a new folder. Release the mouse button to place the bookmark into the folder.
Repeat this step until all your bookmarks are saved in the correct place. You may have to create new folders for categories that you haven't created before, and you may have created categories that you don't actually use
Step 10. Sort your bookmarks
You can sort bookmarks automatically or manually-or a combination of both.
Step 11. Sort automatically
- Right-click on the folder that holds the bookmarks you want to sort.
- From the menu that appears, click Sort by Name.
- The contents of the folder will be sorted by type, then by name. Folders will be placed at the top, sorted alphabetically, followed by URLs also sorted alphabetically.
Step 12. Sort manually
- Click on a folder to open the folder you want to sort manually.
- Click and drag each bookmark to the position you want.
- If you want to move a bookmark to another folder, simply drag it into the folder and release your mouse button.
Step 13. Temporarily sort
Sometimes, there are times when you want to sort not by name. To do this, open the Library window.
- On the menu bar, click Bookmarks then select Show All Bookmarks.
- In the pane on the left, click the folder you want to view. The contents of the folder will appear in the main window on the right.
-
Click on button Views at the top, then select menu Sort, and then select a sort method.
Note that this will only temporarily sort in the Library window, and will have no effect on your Bookmarks menu or sidebar
Tips
- Do it in an intuitive way. Name the folders using simple names that will help you remember where your bookmarks are. Example: use School Links for sites go to your school's website or websites suggested by your teacher.
- Manage more! Move folders into other folders to create a bookmarks folder structure.
- If more than one person uses the same Firefox profile (Windows account), create a folder for each one so that each person can easily find their own bookmarks.
- Sync your bookmarks. Install the Firefox Add-on called Xmarks from Xmarks.com (formerly Foxmarks) to sync the bookmarks you already manage with different computers. This will equalize the bookmarks you already manage on all the desktop and laptop computers you use at home, work, or school.
Warning
- Don't be too stressed when managing all your bookmarks. If you have a large collection of bookmarks, managing them can be very tedious. Install some of your bookmark management tasks every day.
- While each bookmark folder should have a specific purpose, don't store too many folders. Excess management will cause problems such as lack of management.
