Method 4 of 4: Following Post Upload Etiquette
Step 1. Learn global regulations
These rules control all postings on Reddit:
- Don't upload sexual content featuring children (or minors). This content includes sexually suggestive content.
- Don't send spam. The term spamming refers to the repeated and rapid posting of the same thing, or the filling of posts with repeated information.
- Don't try to influence other people's votes/opinions on your posts. Things like begging to asking politely are prohibited.
- Do not upload personal information. This includes your and other people's personal information.
- Do not damage or interfere with the Reddit site.
Step 2. Follow certain rules for each sub-reddit
The sub-reddit has its own rules that fall under Reddit's global set of rules. Most of these rules are written as content restrictions.
- To learn the rules of a specific sub-reddit, touch the sub-reddit link, tap the menu button in the upper-right corner of the screen, and tap “ Community Info ” (mobile app) or check the right side of the sub-reddit's main page (desktop site).
- Violating the sub-reddit rules won't get you into serious trouble with the Reddit site itself, but you and your posts can be removed from the sub-reddit in question. In addition, other users will feel annoyed.
Step 3. Learn “reddiquette”
The term “reddiquette” is a combination of the words “Reddit” and “etiquette” (etiquette) which describes a set of do's/don'ts for most aspects/segments of the site. Some of the most important etiquette are:
- Show politeness. Other content uploaders or commenters are human, just like you. Before uploading something, think about what you would say if you met other users in person.
- Vote on other users' comments and submissions. Make sure you only use the “dislike” or disagree option on content or comments that don't match the sub-reddit or don't provide benefits/feedback either on the chat/topic.
- Don't give a negative vote just because you don't agree with the other person.
- Make meaningful posts, identify new posts, and carefully link to outside sources. The message conveyed must have an impact/benefit on the topic/chat in the right way. On Reddit users don't take spam or self-promotion for granted. If you believe that the existing link can be a good contribution to the topic and can be applied, upload the link. Outspoken self-promotion or attempts to get massive traffic to your posts are usually not well received by Reddit users.
- Tell us why you're editing a comment that's already been uploaded. As a general courtesy, explain why you're editing a post that's already been uploaded because anyone can see what's been edited.
- Don't be mean on purpose. Reddit is trying to build an active community so that abusive behavior/attitudes from users can undermine the effort.
- Do not initiate or engage in quarrels or hostilities. In a situation like this, one user attacks another user, without contributing to the ongoing discussion.
