French fries, or what Belgians call frieten, are a light but very tasty snack and tend to be quite filling. Most people prefer to eat them in restaurants, or buy frozen potatoes that have been cut into pieces and ready to be fried. In fact, making it yourself in your home kitchen is not that difficult, you know; all you need is a deep fryer (a special tool for frying food by immersing it in oil), a sharp knife and a cutting board.
Ingredients
- 6 medium sized potatoes
- Cooking oil. Nut oil, sunflower oil, or canola oil are good choices
Step
Step 1. Wash six medium-sized potatoes with clean water
If you want, you can fry the potatoes with the skin on. However, if the potato skins look too dirty (or if you don't like eating potato skins), peel the skins off before slicing them.
Step 2. Cut the potato into two equal parts
Cut each piece back in half, then slice the potatoes into matchstick shapes that are a bit thick in diameter. Do not worry; Each piece of potato doesn't have to be exactly the same size you see in restaurants. Just make sure the size is long enough and the diameter is not too thick.
Step 3. Heat the oil in a frying pan until the temperature reaches 200°C
Step 4. Prepare a serving basket or plate near the frying pan, covering the surface with kitchen paper
Step 5. Put the potato wedges in the frying pan, cook for 6-7 minutes or until the skin is crispy and golden brown
Check the condition of the potatoes and stir regularly. Be careful, potatoes are very easy to burn.
Step 6. Once cooked, drain the potatoes and place them in a basket or serving plate
Be careful, the freshly cooked potatoes will be very hot.
Step 7. If desired, let the french fries cool for a few minutes
Step 8. Serve and enjoy the fries warm
Tips
- If you don't want to eat potatoes with their skins on, peel them before cutting them.
- Potatoes can be fried together with other fried foods such as chicken.
- Add chopped onions to fried potatoes to enrich the taste. Ripe potatoes can also be seasoned again according to taste so that it tastes even more delicious.
- Remember, potatoes contain quite a lot of water. That's why it's more likely that the water in the potatoes will splatter if they are exposed to hot oil. Therefore, even if it sounds contradictory, try using more oil so that the potatoes cook perfectly without absorbing too much oil.
Warning
- Don't eat the french fries right out of the frying pan. Remember, freshly cooked potatoes are so hot that they risk hurting your tongue and mouth!
- Remember, very hot oil can cause a fire if spilled; in fact, pouring water on a fire actually risks increasing the fire that appears. Therefore, make sure you put the frying pan in a safe place and it is not easy to be bumped or dropped. If possible, also have a fire extinguisher nearby and make an escape plan in case anything unexpected happens.
- Be careful when cooking with high oil very hot; under any circumstances, try to keep your skin from coming into contact with the hot oil.
