The chassis number is the last six digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (NIK). Thus, you need to know the NIK of the vehicle to determine the chassis number. Cars and motorbikes include NIK in different locations, so you need to pay attention to the type of vehicle you have. The engine number is the number stamped on the vehicle engine. If you're having trouble finding the NIK or engine number on your vehicle, there are several places you can check.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Finding the NIK on the Car
Step 1. Check your documents
If you can't check your current car or don't want to go around the vehicle looking for your NIK, there are several documents that should include it. Here are some documents you can check out:
- Certificate of vehicle ownership
- Registration card
- Handbook for vehicle owners
- Insurance documents
- Workshop repair notes
- Police report
- Vehicle history report
Step 2. Look in the vehicle dashboard
The vehicle ID is often in the lower-left corner of the dashboard. You should be able to find the NIK on the driver's side of the windshield.
Step 3. Check the side of the driver's door
The NIK may also be on the side of the frame or the driver's door. Open the driver's door and look for the small white sticker on the edge of the door frame.
- If the vehicle's NIK is on the door frame, the sticker should be just below the height of the rearview mirror.
- The NIK number can also be behind the side of the driver's door, near the driver's seat belt button.
Step 4. Open the hood
If you can't find your vehicle ID, open the hood and look at the front of the engine block. NIK can be listed in front of the engine block.
Step 5. Check the vehicle frame
Sometimes, the NIK is listed on the front of the vehicle frame, near the windshield cleaning fluid container. Go to the front of the car, open the hood, and look for a container of car glass cleaner, close the hood, and check the vehicle frame near this area for a NIK.
Step 6. Lift your spare tire
If you have a spare tire in the trunk and still can't find your vehicle identification number, open the trunk of the vehicle, take the spare tire, and see where your car spare tire is stored. Your vehicle's NIK may be listed in this area.
Step 7. Peek under the wheel well
The wheel wells are the spaces where the vehicle's wheels are installed, and your vehicle's NIK may be listed on the rear wheel well. Get in the back of the car, crouch down, and look at your vehicle's wheel well. Check both sides of the wheel well for your vehicle's NIK.
Maybe you need a flashlight to see the NIK
Step 8. Record the NIK of the vehicle somewhere
If you have found your NIK, make sure you write it down somewhere that is easily accessible whenever you need it. Save the NIK in a notebook, computer file, or send it to your email address.
Step 9. Identify your vehicle's chassis number
The chassis number is the last six digits of the NIK. Look at the NIK of the vehicle you recorded and circle the last six digits to find out the chassis number of your vehicle.
Method 2 of 3: Finding your NIK on a Motorcycle, Scooter or ATV
Step 1. Find the NIK on the neck of the handlebars
On motorcycles, the NIK is most often listed on the neck of the handlebars. You can find this by turning the handlebars sideways and looking at the neck of the handlebar which is a metal cylinder that extends down from the handle. The motorcycle NIK should be engraved on the metal.
You may need to check both sides of the handlebar neck to find the NIK
Step 2. Check the motor of the vehicle
Sometimes the NIK is on the motorbike of your vehicle. If you don't find the NIK on the neck of the handlebars, check on the motor vehicle. The NIK should be near the base of the motor cylinder.
Step 3. Check the front frame of the vehicle
On ATVs and some motorcycles, the NIK may be printed on the frame, but finding it can be a bit difficult. You may need a flashlight and look for the NIK on the inside of the motorcycle.
- Check the outer frame of the vehicle first. The NIK may be just below the motorcycle shifter on the left side of the motorcycle. If you can't find it in the exoskeleton, try to find the inside.
- Some vehicle manufacturers stamp the NIK in certain areas of the frame. For example, Honda stamps the NIK on the right side of the handlebars and on the frame area just above the motorcycle on the left side of the motorcycle. Check with your vehicle manufacturer to see if there are certain areas that need to be checked first
Step 4. Don't forget to circle the last six digits
The motorcycle chassis number is the last six digits of its NIK. Circle the last six digits of your NIK to find out the chassis number of your vehicle.
Method 3 of 3: Finding the Machine Number
Step 1. Check the machine
Your vehicle's engine number should be stamped directly on the engine. Open the hood or look at the side of your motorcycle engine. The machine number will be clearly stated on the sticker on the machine.
Step 2. Refer to the vehicle owner's manual
If you can't see the sticker on the engine, check the owner's manual for the vehicle's engine number. This number should appear on the first few pages of the manual.
Your vehicle owner's manual should include a picture of how to find this number on the engine block
Step 3. Identify your machine number
The vehicle engine number is a six-digit number followed by a three-digit engine code. Maybe the number you get is a three-digit number followed by a six-digit number. If so, the first three digits are the engine code and the last six digits are the vehicle engine number.
