CCleaner is a useful utility for cleaning accumulated internet residue or files. While reading this, it is recommended that you read this article to tips before starting to remove using CCleaner.
Step
Method 1 of 2: File Cleaner
Step 1. Open CCleaner
Step 2. Go to the Cleaner tab and you are faced with a very confusing line or checkbox
Step 3. Check the items you want to clean from the browser and other recommended programs
Under internet explorer check for temporary internet files, cookies, and the location of the last download. Most users don't really need this file. Leave history and bookmarks unchecked. History can be deleted but you can lose sites that have been flagged. You can leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced.
Step 4. Run CCleaner and start deleting files
Step 5. There is no need to read the full list of cleaned files, as the list is several pages long
Method 2 of 2: Registry Cleaner
Step 1. Know who can use a registry cleaner and what can be used for cleaning
Use a registry cleaner after uninstalling programs, as uninstallers often leave behind faulty registry entries. Registry cleaners are recommended for slightly more savvy users.
Step 2. Click the "Registry" tab on the left side of the program
Step 3. Check the items you want to clean
Most items will make this process complete.
Step 4. Click the "Scan for issues" button at the bottom of the program
Step 5. Give the program a few moments to run and search for any potential registry problems
Step 6. Click the "Fix Selected issues" button
Step 7. Make (always) backup copies of the registry files
Sometimes these cleaners tend to make a complete mess of the registry, causing other major problems and leaving your computer completely damaged. Keep a copy of the registry in an accessible and safe place before repairing it. You may not need a copy of this, but it can't hurt to keep one just in case.
Step 8. Click "Fix All Selected Issues" when the dialog box appears
Step 9. Click the "Close" box to close the dialog box and return to the previous program box
Tips
- You can check the Recycle bin, as CCleaner automatically empties it.
- Cnet also offers a CCleaner extension called "CCEnhancer". This program gives you more options that might improve various cleanings better.
- Look at the Applications tab under Clean. Firefox users may need to uncheck some options to prevent the program from deleting history.
- Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and check for remaining registry entries will take less time.
- In Options you can specify how CCleaner should clean files.
- Make sure you don't delete the files you need. Hit Analyze before cleaning, and back up your registry.
- The Tools tab is useful for uninstalling programs and setting the default program. Why do you need this if Windows has all the features? This applies especially to Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer (the original program) does not pick up some entries (although the device explorer is easier to use).
Warning
- Be careful when deleting files, you risk messing up your computer.
- Watch out for some items. Let the dialog box warn you when you are cleaning items. Cleaning this action can cost you data or worse. Cleaning up data points in Microsoft Security Essentials can make restore points disappear (or whatever). Read the dialog box that appears and do the suggestions!
- The Vista computer seems to mess with program compatibility, but it seems to work on Home Premium. Make sure you don't install too many programs at once.
