This wikiHow teaches you how to send an email as a text message from Gmail. To do this, you need to know the phone number and service code (carrier) of the recipient. Keep in mind that while you can easily send a 160-character (or less) SMS message to most cellular service providers, photos, videos, or long text messages sent via email may not always be received on many phones.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Finding Message Address
Step 1. Understand the process of sending SMS via email
To send an email message as an SMS, you need to know the recipient's phone number and the email service code.
- Unfortunately, not all email services support messages sent from an email address.
- Most standard text or SMS messages have a 160 character limit.
Step 2. Open the Email2SMS website
Visit https://email2sms.info/ in your computer's web browser.
You will need to use this site to find out which email service code you need to enter
Step 3. Scroll to the “Search the list” segment
This segment is at the top of the page.
Step 4. Select a country
Click the "Country" drop-down box, then click the name of your home country.
You may need to scroll through the screen to find the country you want
Step 5. Enter the name of the recipient's email service provider
In the " Carrier " text field, type the name of the recipient's email service provider.
For example, if the recipient uses the Sprint email service, type in Sprint
Step 6. Review the "Gateway" results
The address in the " number@[address] " entry next to the " Gateway " heading refers to the address that needs to be used to send the email as a text message or SMS.
- You may need to scroll through the screen to see "Gateway" results.
- Sometimes, you may see several different options related to a subcategory of services. These options usually have the same address.
Part 2 of 2: Sending Text Messages from Gmail
Step 1. Open Gmail
Visit https://www.gmail.com/ via a computer web browser (desktop) or touch the Gmail app icon (mobile device). The Gmail inbox page will appear if you're already signed in to your account.
If not, enter your account email address and password when prompted
Step 2. Click Compose
It's in the top-left corner of the page. After that, a new message window will open on the right side of the page.
-
On mobile devices, touch the pencil-shaped " Compose " icon
Step 3. Type in the recipient's phone number
In the " To " or " Recipient " field, type in the 10-12 digit mobile number of the recipient you want to send the SMS to (including country code).
Step 4. Add the email code
Type in @ followed by the code you found in the previous method. Now you have your phone number and email address in the " To " field.
For example, the code for Verizon's service is "@vtext.com" so you need to type [email protected] in the " To " field to send an SMS to a Verizon number
Step 5. Enter the message
In the large text field at the bottom of the message window, type your message.
- You can add a title line if you want, but not all SMS services can display the message title.
- Make sure the message you send is under 160 characters if you want to send it as a standard SMS message. If there are more than 160 characters, the message will be sent as MMS or EMS which may not be supported by the recipient's phone.
Step 6. Click Send
It's at the bottom of the window. After that, the email will be sent as an SMS.
-
On mobile devices, touch the "Send" icon shaped like a paper airplane
Tips
SMS sending is generally supported by all cellular services. However, sending MMS (eg photo content) is not used very often
Warning
- Google doesn't charge for SMS services, but a standard fee may be charged when your friend replies to an SMS you send on their phone.
- Sending SMS via Gmail may not be possible in Indonesia. In addition, the Indonesian cellular service code has not been registered on the Email2SMS site.
