This wikiHow teaches you how to delete a Skype account. Currently, the only way to delete an account is to delete the Microsoft account. This means that you're also deleting data for other services (e.g. Xbox, OneDrive, Outlook, etc.) associated with that account. If you don't want to permanently delete your Microsoft account, you can hide your Skype account from showing up in search.
Step
Part 1 of 2: Deleting a Microsoft Account
Step 1. Visit https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=523898 via a web browser
You will be taken to the login page after that. The only way to delete a Skype account is to delete the Microsoft account.
- Deleting an account also deletes email addresses associated with Outlook.com, Live.com, or Hotmail.com services.
- If this account is associated with a Microsoft product subscription (eg Office 365, OneDrive, or Xbox Live), you will no longer be able to access those products.
Step 2. Enter your Microsoft email address and click Next
Type the email address associated with your Microsoft account into the blank and click the blue button labeled “ Next ”.
Step 3. Enter the account password and click Sign In
You will be signed in to your Microsoft account after that.
Step 4. Click Email or Text Messages.
A verification code will be sent to the email address or phone number associated with your Microsoft account.
Step 5. Get the verification code
You can get the code in several ways, depending on the pre-selected option:
- Short message – Open the messaging app on your phone, then tap a message from Microsoft (usually indicated by a six-digit number). A seven-digit verification code is displayed in the text "Use ####### as Microsoft account security code".
- Email – Open an email account, click the message from Microsoft titled " Microsoft account security code ", then look at the seven-digit number next to the heading " Security code: ", in the middle of the email. Check the " Updates " and " Spam " folders if you don't see the message in a few minutes.
Step 6. Enter the verification code
Type the code into the " Code " field near the web browser tab used to cancel or delete the account.
Step 7. Click Verify
It's a blue button in the lower-right corner of the window. After that, you will be taken to the "Ready to close" page.
You may need to click on the link “ No thanks ” on the next page before arriving at the "Ready to close" page.
Step 8. Click Next
It's in the lower-left corner of the "Make sure [your name] is ready to close" page. This page displays suggested actions you need to take before canceling or deleting your account. These actions include:
- Cancel the service you subscribed to using a Microsoft account.
- Canceling the services of the business or organization you are subscribed to through your Microsoft account.
- Save HealthVault history or records.
- Using the remaining Skype balance.
- Set up automatic email replies on Outlook accounts.
- Turn off the “Reset Protection” option on all Windows devices.
Step 9. Click each box
on the page.
Check the box to the left of each account closure impact on the page.
Step 10. Select the reason for closing the account
Click the drop-down box Select a reason ” at the bottom of the page, then select the reason for closing the account.
Click " My reason isn't listed ” on the menu if you don't have a specific reason.
Step 11. Click Mark account for closure
It's a blue button in the lower-left corner of the page. After that, your Skype account will be added to the deletion list. After 60 days, the account will be permanently deleted.
If the option " Mark account for closure ” is inaccessible (or appears blurry), you have not ticked all the boxes and/or have not selected a reason for closing your account.
Part 2 of 2: Hiding Skype Account
Step 1. Visit https://www.skype.com/en/ via a web browser
This Skype website allows you to edit your profile.
Step 2. Click Sign In
It's in the lower-right corner of the page. After that, a drop-down menu will be displayed.
Step 3. Click My Account
This button is the first option in the drop-down menu.
If you don't automatically sign in to your Microsoft account, you'll be taken to a logon page. Type in the email address associated with your Skype account and click “ Next " After that, enter the account password and click “ Sign In ”.
Step 4. Scroll down and click Edit Profile
This option is the first option under the " Settings and preferences " heading, at the bottom of the screen.
Step 5. Uncheck the box next to the “Discoverability” option
This option is the first option under the "Profile settings" section. With this option, your Skype account will not appear in search results and friend suggestions. You can hide your account from the public, without having to delete your Microsoft account entirely.
