This wikiHow teaches you how to add an image to a Windows or Mac version of Adobe Illustrator, or in Adobe Illustrator Draw on your phone/tablet. Illustrator Draw has fewer features than the desktop version of Illustrator.

Method 1 of 2: Using the Desktop
Step 1. Open a new Illustrator file by clicking "File > Open" in the menu bar and selecting the file you want to insert the image into
To create a new file, click "File > New…".
Step 2. Click File on the menu bar at the top of the screen
Step 3. Click Place…
Step 4. Select the image you want to add
Step 5. Click Place
Step 6. Place the image in the document
Click a corner of the image, then drag the button in or out to resize the image
Step 7. Click Embed on the toolbar at the top of the screen
Step 8. Click File on the menu bar
Step 9. Click Save
The image you selected has now been added to the Illustrator file.
Method 2 of 2: Using Phone/Tablet
Step 1. Tap the black icon with the orange pen head image to open Adobe Illustrator Draw
- Adobe Illustrator Draw is a free application available on the Apple App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Google Play Store (Android).
- If you're not automatically signed in to your Adobe account, enter your account information, or tap the button Sign Up to create an account.
Step 2. Tap on the project you want to insert the image into
Create a new project by tapping the white "+" button in the orange circle in the lower right corner of the screen
Step 3. Tap one of the board sizes from the display on the right of the screen
Step 4. Tap the orange + button in the white circle at the bottom right corner of the screen
Step 5. Tap the Image Layer button at the bottom of the screen
Step 6. Select the image source
- Tap On my [device name] to select a photo from the gallery.
- Tap Take a Photo to take a photo from the device camera.
- Tap My Files to select an image from Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Tap From Market or Adobe Stock to download and/or purchase images from others.
- If prompted, allow Adobe Illustrator Draw to access files and the camera on the device.
Step 7. Select the image you want, or take a new photo
Step 8. Position the image
Tap a corner of the image, then drag the button in or out to resize the image
Step 9. Tap Done
The image you selected has now been added to the Illustrator Draw project.
