The Xbox One is designed to be constantly connected to the internet, and updates generally download without the need for player interaction. You can change console settings so that updates are downloaded automatically or manually. You can also fix the issue of Xbox One not being able to install updates.

Step

Method 1 of 3: Getting Automatic Updates

Step 1. Enable Instant-on mode

Xbox One is designed to always be connected to the internet, and instant-on mode will download any available updates and install them automatically. To use instant-on, your Xbox must be connected to the internet.

  • Go to the Xbox One home screen.
  • On the Xbox controller, press the Menu button.
  • Select Settings, then select Power and startup.
  • Set the Power mode option to Instant-on.
  • Make sure the Automatically download updates option is checked.

Step 2. Turn off the Xbox when finished playing

With Instant-on, the console will not turn off completely, but will enter low power mode. In low-power mode, every night the console will scan for updates and then try to install those updates.

Step 3. Use the Xbox as usual

For most updates, you don't need to do anything, although sometimes you are asked to confirm to install the update.

Method 2 of 3: Updating Xbox Manually

Step 1. Make sure your Xbox is connected to Xbox Live

To update your console, your Xbox must be connected to Xbox Live. Read on how to connect your console to Xbox Live on the internet.

If you don't have an internet connection, you can contact Microsoft to find out how to apply manual updates. Microsoft may be able to provide you with a link to an update file that can be installed on your Xbox One via USB. The update file is only available for Xbox users who cannot connect the console to the internet

Step 2. Open the Settings menu

If you don't have Instant-on enabled, or the update appears while you're using the console, you can apply the update from the Settings menu on the main screen.

Updates are divided into two types, namely Available and Mandatory. Available updates can be downloaded at any time, and are not required to connect to Xbox Live. After some time, the Available update will become Mandatory, so you must install the update to get into Xbox Live. If you don't have the Mandatory update installed, you won't be able to connect to Xbox Live

Step 5. Select Start update, then press A to start the update process

The update will be downloaded and installed. Your Xbox One might restart during the installation process.

If you don't want to install updates, select Disconnect and Close. Your connection to the Xbox One will be lost, but you will still be able to play offline games on the console. You cannot play online or download game updates until you install the Mandatory update

Method 3 of 3: Troubleshooting

Step 1. If you see the message Your Xbox is almost full when updating a game or app (this message won't appear for system updates), follow these steps:

  • Open the My Games & Apps menu.
  • Choose a game, app, or trailer that you don't use anymore.
  • Press the Menu key, then select Uninstall.
  • Once the storage space is freed up, repeat the update process.

Step 2. If you see the message There was a problem with the update while updating the console, the message is caused by a network problem

Follow these steps:

  • Make sure you're still connected to Xbox Live, then try the update again.
  • If you still can't update your console, turn off your Xbox One, then unplug the power cord for at least 30 seconds. After that, restart the Xbox One and try updating again.
  • If you still can't download the update, try downloading the Offline System Update Diagnostic Tool from the official Microsoft website, then follow the user guide on the same site. To use the program, you must have an NTFS-formatted USB drive with at least 2 GB of free space. Running the program on Xbox One may take a while.
  • If none of the above steps work, you may need to contact Microsoft for a console repair.
