Method 1 of 2: Performing Updates Directly on the Device (Over-the-Air)
Step 1. Back up the data on your iOS device
Step 2. Open the settings menu
(“Settings”).
This menu is indicated by the gray gear icon which is usually displayed on the home screen.
Step 3. Swipe screen and touch
General.
Step 4. Touch Software Update
It's at the top of the menu.
Step 5. Touch Download and Install or Install Now.
If the software update has already been downloaded, an Install Now button will appear below the update description.
You need to receive legal approval before manually downloading updates
Step 6. Enter the passcode if prompted
Type in the passcode used to unlock the phone.
- The phone will restart and the update process will begin.
- Sometimes, you need to reset your phone. However, all applications and data will remain intact.
Method 2 of 2: Using iTunes
Step 1. Connect the device to the computer
Use the USB cable that came with the device purchase package.
Touch Trust on the device screen if prompted after connecting it to the computer
Step 2. Open iTunes
You'll need to open iTunes manually if the program doesn't start automatically when the device is connected to the computer.
Step 3. Click the device icon located on the top bar of the iTunes window
It may take a while for this icon to appear.
Step 4. Click the Back Up Now button
Before updating your device, it is always recommended that you back up your data in case any problems occur during the update process. The backup only takes a minute or two, and allows you to restore your iOS device settings and all their data if an error occurs during the update process.
Step 5. Click Check for Updates
This button is on the “Summary” page once the iOS device is selected.
You may be prompted to update your device automatically the first time you launch iTunes after connecting your device to your computer. A notification will be displayed if the device is running the latest operating system
Step 6. Click Download and Update
The update will be downloaded to the computer and applied to the iOS device. This process may take some time and you can monitor the progress of the update via the device screen.
Step 7. Reset the device
Once the update is installed on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, you will need to complete the process by entering your passcode or signing in with your Apple ID.
