This wikiHow teaches you how to connect a DVD player to a Samsung television. The DVD player can be connected to the television using an HDMI cable, composite, component, or S-Video cable. Checks to see if the Samsung television connection supports DVD or Blu-ray players. Then, you need to select the correct source or input on the television to display the DVD player when it is connected.

Step 1. Connect the cable to the back of the DVD
The type of cable a DVD player uses may vary depending on the age of the DVD player. Connect the cable to the appropriate port on the back of the DVD player. Below is a list of four types of cables that can be used to connect a DVD player to a television.

HDMI:
HDMI is a thick cable that is commonly used in most high definition televisions (high definition aka HD). This cable connects to the port labeled HDMI on the back of DVD players and televisions.

Component:
Component cables also support high-definition video. This cable consists of five colored connectors. The red, green, and blue connectors are video connectors. The separate red and white wires are the video connectors. Simply insert each color-coded cable into the port on the back of the DVD player.

Composite:
Composite cable (sometimes called "AV" or "RCA") is an older format cable. This cable does not support high-definition video, and only standard-definition (SD) video. This cable is similar to a component cable, except that it only has one yellow video connector, along with a red and white connector for audio. Connect the yellow cable to the yellow port on the back of the DVD player, then connect the red and white audio cables to the same colored port on the back of the DVD player.

S-Videos:
S-Video cable is another older format that doesn't support high-definition video, although standard-definition picture quality is still better than composite cable. The S-Video cable has 4 pins and a small label. Match the pins on the S-Video cable with the holes in the S-Video port on the back of the DVD player and connect. You will also need to connect two red and white composite audio cables with their respective ports on the back of the DVD player because the S-video cable has no audio signal.

Step 2. Connect the cable to the back of the television
Depending on the type of cable used to connect the DVD player, plug it into the proper port on the back of the Samsung television. An HDMI cable is connected to the port labeled “HDMI”. The component and composite cables are connected to the colored ports on the back of the television. The S-Video cable is connected to the S-Video port by matching the pins to the holes in the port.
Some new televisions have shared ports for component and composite cables. If you are connecting only one of these ports, connect the yellow video cable to the back of the television
Step 3. Connect the DVD player power cable and turn it on
Make sure there is an electrical outlet near the television to connect to the DVD player. Otherwise, you can use a connecting cable to get to the DVD player.
Step 4. Select the source on the television
There is a source on each port on the back of the television. Press the source button on the television remote to select the input source until you find the DVD player. Most DVD and Blu-ray players have a startup screen that appears when the television reaches its proper source.
