Pounds (lbs) and kilograms (kg) are used to measure weight or mass. The pound is the imperial unit commonly used in the United States, while the kilogram is a metric unit used almost all over the world. Note that 1 pound equals 0.454 kilograms and 1 kilogram equals 2.2046 pounds. There are easy ways to convert between the two units.
Step
Method 1 of 2: Convert Pounds to Kilograms
Step 1. Divide the pound number by 2.2046 using the standard equation
For example, if you want to convert 50 pounds to kilograms, divide 50 by 2.2046, which equals 22.67985 kg. To convert 200 pounds to kilograms, divide 200 by 2.2046, which equals 90.71940 kg.
Step 2. Multiply the pound number by 0.454 as an alternative
If you prefer multiplication over division, use another conversion factor to convert pounds to kilograms. For example, to convert 100 pounds to kilograms, multiply 100 by 0.454, which equals 45.4 kg.
Step 3. Round your answer to two digits after the comma
Usually, you don't need more than 2 digits after the comma. So if your answer is 22, 67985, round up to 22, 68. For another example, 90, 71940 are rounded up to 90, 72.
Try not to round the number before converting it to kilograms
Method 2 of 2: Converting Kilograms to Pounds
Step 1. Multiply the kilogram number by 2.2046 using the traditional formula
For example, to convert 75 kilograms to pounds, multiply 75 by 2.2046, which equals 165.345 pounds. To convert 350 kilograms to pounds, multiply 350 by 2.2046, which equals 771.61 pounds.
Step 2. Divide the kilogram number by 0.454, if that's easier
If it's easier for you to do division, try converting kilograms to pounds. For example, if you want to convert 25 kilograms to pounds, divide 25 by 0.454, which equals 55.066 pounds. You can also divide 500 kilograms by 0.454 to get 1101, 321 pounds.
Step 3. Remember that there are more pounds than kilograms
Since 1 kilogram equals 2.2046 pounds, the converted number of pounds is always more than the kilogram. Keep this in mind and double-check the calculation if your pound number is greater than kilograms.
