Stomach so hungry but the rice you just cooked ended up too mushy, sticky and not tasty enough to eat? Do not worry! In fact, rice that is too soft in texture can still be improved, you know! Method 1 of 3: Saving Rice Texture
Step 1. Let the liquid in the pan evaporate
Open the lid of the pot to let the steam out, then turn on the stove over low heat and cook the rice for another 5 minutes. Supposedly, all the remaining water will evaporate after that.
Step 2. Drain the excess liquid on the rice with the help of a basket or small slotted sieve
If there's still some liquid left in the pan, try placing a colander or small slotted basket over the sink and pouring the cooked rice into it. Let stand for one minute to drain excess liquid. If necessary, move the rice from one basket to another to speed up the drying process.
At this stage, the rice may have been saved. If that's the case, you don't need to apply any of the other methods listed in this article
Step 3. Rinse the rice that looks sticky with cold water
Rice is actually overcooked if the final texture looks sticky or mushy. To fix this, try putting the cooked rice into a slotted basket or strainer, then running it under cold water while separating the sticky rice grains with the help of your hands.
Step 4. Bake the rice in the oven for 5 minutes to remove the excess liquid
If the rice is still too mushy or runny afterward, try heating it in the oven at 177°C for 5 minutes to evaporate the excess water. Remember, the rice must be spread evenly on the baking sheet, yes!
Step 5. Cook new rice
In some cases, rice that is too soggy can no longer be saved. If you have free time, immediately cook new rice. At the same time, store overly soggy rice in a plastic container, then place the container in the refrigerator or freezer. Don't worry, rice can be reprocessed into various new recipes in the future!
Cooked rice can last for 4-6 days in the refrigerator, and a maximum of six months in the freezer
Method 2 of 3: Using Overly Soggy Rice
Step 1. Fry the rice
Heat oil in a frying pan and sauté the garlic, onion and ginger until they turn translucent. Then, add vegetables like carrots or peas, and add 1 tbsp. soy sauce if you want. Once the vegetables are soft, add the rice little by little while continuing to stir. After the entire portion of rice has entered the pan and the surface of the pan looks steamy, it means that the fried rice is cooked and ready to be served!
Step 2. Make the rice pudding
Heat the rice on the stove over low heat. Then, add 750 ml of high-fat milk, 250 ml of cream, and 100 grams of sugar. After that, add a stick of vanilla to enrich the taste of the pudding. Increase the heat, then cook the pudding for 35 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the pudding is cooked, remove the vanilla and cool to a temperature before serving.
Split the vanilla stem first, then scrape the contents and pour it into the pudding mixture. After that, add the empty vanilla stick to the pudding mix. Applying this method will allow the vanilla flavor to spread more evenly throughout the pudding
Step 3. Turn the rice into chips
Roll out the rice on a baking sheet as thin as possible, then bake for 2 hours at 93°C. Once cooked, remove the pan and break the rice sheet into small pieces. Then, fry the rice pieces in oil at 204°C. Once the rice chips have floated, scoop them out using a slotted spoon and drain the excess oil on paper towels before enjoying.
Step 4. Make a “hamburger” from rice and vegetables
First of all, process 175 grams of rice with 200 grams of pinto beans, 175 grams of corn, 3 cloves of minced garlic, 20 grams of chopped dried tomatoes, handful of chopped basil, tsp. cumin, and 1 tsp. salt until the texture resembles a very thick puree. Then, round the rice puree until it resembles a hamburger, then fry each side over medium to high heat for 6 minutes.
Method 3 of 3: Cooking Rice Correctly
Step 1. Wash the rice in cold water before cooking
First, put the amount of rice that will be used in a slotted basket or small slotted sieve. Then, run the rice under cold water while stirring with your hands to remove any excess flour that has stuck to the surface. Remember, this step should not be skipped so that the rice does not end up mushy or sticky when cooked.
- If the rice is washed immediately in the pot, discard the washing water and pour clean water back into it. Do this process once or twice before the rice is cooked.
- If the rice is being washed using a slotted basket or colander, gently shake the basket or sieve to drain any excess water.
Step 2. Add the right amount of water
For every one measuring cup of rice, use about 350 to 400 ml of water. Reduce the amount a little if you're using short-grain rice, and increase the amount a little if you're using brown rice. Don't use too much water so the rice doesn't end up being too mushy!
Step 3. Heat a pot of rice over medium heat
Don't use a fire that is too high so the rice doesn't burn and cooks more evenly! Instead, use low to medium heat to allow the water to boil slowly.
Step 4. Place a towel or kitchen paper under the lid of the pot
After the water boils, the amount should be slightly reduced. When that happens, immediately place a towel or kitchen paper under the lid to reduce the level of condensation inside. The excessive evaporation process will make the texture of the rice too soft when cooked.
Don't let the edges of the towels or kitchen paper hang over the sides of the pot to prevent them from getting caught in the fire! Instead, fold the edges and tuck them under the lid of the pot
Step 5. Turn off the heat after the rice is cooked for 15 minutes
After turning off the heat, do not open the lid for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, remove the lid from the pot and stir the rice with a fork. Supposedly, the rice is ready to be served at that stage.
Remember, the rice must be rested so that the bottom texture is not too soft and the surface is too dry
