Jasmine rice is a kind of oval-shaped fragrant rice from Thailand that has a slightly sticky texture. This rice has a nutty-like taste, so it is suitable as an alternative to white rice. Best of all, you can cook jasmine rice easily and quickly in a rice cooker just like white rice. However, it is very important to wash the jasmine rice before cooking to get rid of the dirt and flour that has stuck to it. That way, you will get delicious and soft rice to serve with your favorite side dish.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (185 grams) jasmine rice
- 1 cup (237 ml) or more water for soaking rice
- teaspoon (3 grams) salt (optional)
Step
Method 1 of 3: Washing Rice
Step 1. Place the rice in a bowl, then pour cold water
Place 1 cup (185 grams) of jasmine rice in a large bowl. Pour enough water until the rice is submerged.
Step 2. Stir the rice in the yoke by hand to clean it
Once the rice is submerged in water, use your hands to gently stir the rice for 3-5 minutes. This will help get rid of the dirt and flour on the surface of the rice. So, over time the water will turn cloudy.
Stir the rice gently. You should not break or press the rice too hard by hand
Step 3. Dry the rice and add water to the bowl
After stirring the rice for a few minutes, pour the contents of the bowl into a sieve to remove any soiled water. Rinse the bowl, put the rice back in, then pour in clean water again until the rice is submerged.
Step 4. Repeat the washing process
Once the rice is submerged in clean water, use your hands to stir it for 2-3 minutes. Dissolved dirt and flour this time less. So, the water should not be too cloudy.
Step 5. Drain the water again
After washing the rice a second time, pour this bowl into a sieve to drain the water. Shake the filter to remove any remaining water.
If the water still looks very cloudy after washing it twice, you will need to repeat the process. Keep washing the rice until the water appears clear
Method 2 of 3: Cooking Rice
Step 1. Put the rice and water in the rice cooker
When the jasmine rice is clean, put it in the rice cooker pot. After that, pour 1 cup (237 ml) of clean water into it.
To cook jasmine rice, use a 1:1 ratio. You can increase the amount of water according to the amount of rice. 1 cup (185 grams) of jasmine rice and 1 cup (237 ml) of water is usually enough for 4-6 servings of rice
Step 2. Add salt
If you want to season the rice before it's cooked, add teaspoon (3 grams) of salt to the rice cooker. Use a wooden spoon to stir it together with the rice and water to mix thoroughly.
Adding salt is an optional step. You can skip it if you want
Step 3. Let the rice soften for an hour
After mixing the rice, water, and salt in the rice cooker, put the lid on and let it rest for an hour. This will soften the rice so that it has a more delicious texture once it is cooked.
Step 4. Cook the rice according to the cooking instructions on the rice cooker
After the rice has been allowed to soften for an hour, turn on the rice cooker. Read the manual for using the rice cooker to find the best setting, as well as the length of time it takes for the rice to cook.
Most rice cookers are programmed to turn off the machine at the selected cooking time. In general, jasmine rice will cook after 25 minutes of cooking in the rice cooker
Method 3 of 3: Finishing the Cooking Process
Step 1. Let the rice sit for at least 10 minutes
Once the jasmine rice is cooked, turn off the rice cooker. However, do not remove the rice in it. Let the rice sit for 10-15 minutes.
Make sure that the lid of the rice cooker remains in place during this process
Step 2. Stir in the rice
After letting it sit for a few minutes, use a wooden spoon to stir it. This will remove any remaining liquid and make the rice texture more fluffy.
Step 3. Transfer the rice to a bowl and serve
Once the rice has risen, use a rice spoon to transfer it to a bowl. Serve the rice while it's still hot as a complement to your favorite meat dishes.
Tips
Do not open the rice cooker to see the jasmine rice as it cooks. This can slow down the cooking process or make the rice taste tough
