Forts or blanket houses are easy to build and can provide hours of fun for children and adults alike. This fort can be made using everyday household items such as blankets, sheets, chairs, and rubber bands. To make a blanket fort you have to frame the furniture, drape the blanket over the frame, and then tie it together.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Gathering Materials
Step 1. Find a place with enough space
Make sure the room you want to use to build the fort has enough space. The space that is generally used is the living room, dining room, or bedroom.
The room doesn't have to be empty without stuff. The furniture in the room can be used as the "wall" of the fort
Step 2. Find materials to build the skeleton
Chairs are often used because the back can be used as a benchmark for the height of the fort. Also consider using furniture such as tables, couches, and sofas to help build the framework of the fort.
Use furniture of different heights to create different rooms in the castle
Step 3. Gather some blankets and pillows
You'll need some blankets to drape over the fort's frame. Sheets make good hangers because they are light and don't sag. You will also need blankets and pillows inside the fort for comfort.
Part 2 of 3: Building a Structure
Step 1. Determine the location of the walls
Place the collected furniture around the room to build the fort frame. Be sure to add room for passages, doors, and secret passages within the fort.
Step 2. Hang the blanket over the frame
Once the frame is finished, start draping the blanket over it. Use blankets of different weights to create different spaces within the fort.
- For example, hang sheets over the frame to allow light and air to enter the fort.
- Add heavy comforters to the frame sections to create dark spaces within the fort.
Step 3. Secure the blanket
Use clothespins or rubber bands to help secure the blankets that serve as the walls and roof of the fort. Large pillows or sofa cushions can also be used to secure the blanket by placing it against the fort frame.
Part 3 of 3: Making the Room Cozy
Step 1. Create the floor using a blanket
Spread a blanket on the floor of the castle for more comfort. Sleeping bags can be added inside the fort as a bed.
Step 2. Add pillows for more comfort
Carefully place pillows inside the fort to make sofas, chairs and beds. Since you will be resting on the floor, a number of pillows will provide comfort for the castle guests.
Step 3. Add light to the castle
Christmas lights or flashlights are a great addition to any fort. This light can be used for reading or playing board games inside the fort structure.
Step 4. Add a fan to keep the room cool
Place fans in the open parts of the fort to help circulate air throughout the fort. Be careful and avoid hanging the blanket behind the fan.
Tips
- Provide snacks or board games for more fun.
- Use chairs or tables of different heights to create multiple rooms and aisles.
- If you have an electronic device, make sure your fort is close to a plug so you can charge your device.
