A circle skirt is a wavy skirt that is named after its shape when it is stretched out. You can make your own circle skirt from fabric sold in stores or with a pattern you make yourself. Even if you're just learning to sew, you can finish a hoop skirt in an hour.

Step

Part 1 of 3: Getting Ready

Step 1. Prepare the necessary cloth and tools

Circle skirts are easy to make, even without a pattern. Before making a circle skirt, you need to prepare:

  • One meter long t-shirt fabric (any color)
  • The bottom skirt you usually wear
  • Scissors
  • Pen needle
  • Sewing machine

Step 2. Fold the fabric into quarters

Prepare the fabric to be sewn and then fold it into two equal parts with the short sides of the same length. After that, fold the long side in half again so that the fabric is folded into four equal parts.

  • If you are using a patterned fabric, fold the fabric so that the pattern is inside.
  • Place the cloth on the floor when it is finished folding.

Step 3. Cut the fabric for the waistband

You will need to prepare two long pieces of cloth to make a waistband. Cut the short side of the fabric 8-10 cm wide from the open edge of the fabric. Do not cut the folds of the fabric.

Save this long piece of cloth first

Step 4. Use the skirt you normally wear to determine your waist size

Fold the waistband of your skirt into four equal lengths and place them in the corner of the folded fabric. Use the width of the waistband to determine the waist circumference of the skirt to be sewn.

  • To make a waistband, cut the fabric in a semi-circle for a waistband that is the same width as the folded skirt's waist.
  • Cut the waist of the skirt a bit smaller because the fabric stretches and can still be enlarged if needed.
  • Alternatively, you can measure the waist circumference with a tape measure and then divide by four to determine the width of the fabric to cut for the skirt waist.

Step 5. Cut the bottom of the skirt

The next step, cut the fabric for the bottom of the skirt on the edge of the fabric that is not folded. Make sure the skirt you make forms a circle with the same radius from the waist to the bottom of the skirt. You may need to cut the fabric in certain areas to make it completely circular.

Don't worry if the bottom of the skirt is not neat because this part will be hemmed so that small flaws can be overcome

Part 2 of 3: Making Waistbands

Step 1. Measure the length of the waistband

Unfold the skirt so that it forms a semi-circle. Open the folds of the waist of the skirt you usually wear and compare the size of the waist circumference of the two skirts. Thus, you can determine whether the waist circumference of the circle skirt is correct.

If it's still too small, you can make it a little bigger

Step 2. Measure the fabric to make a waistband

Take the piece of fabric that you have prepared for the waistband and place it next to the waist of the circle skirt. There should be two long pieces of fabric stacked on top of each other with a pattern facing each other (if your fabric has a pattern). Place this long cloth near the waist of the circle skirt and then trim the ends leaving a seam so that it can still be hem.

Since the waist is semicircular and the long fabric is straight, you will need to measure that area or at least cut the fabric at the waist a little more

Step 3. Sew the strips of fabric for the waistband

Take the strips of fabric for the waistband and place them on top of each other. If your fabric is patterned, the outer side of the fabric must be on the inside. Sew the short side of the waistband to connect it. After that, hem the long side of the waistband by folding the fabric inward 1 cm wide and then sew using a machine.

  • Use regular stitches to hem the waistband.
  • You don't need to use elastic to make a waistband because the fabric stretches.

Step 4. Attach the waistband to the skirt using a pin

Unfold the skirt and spread it out on a table or on the floor. Take a waistband and attach it to the waist of the skirt using a pin. Before installing the waistband, make sure the outer sides of the skirt and waistband are facing each other.

  • The two ends of the waistband must meet after being joined to the fringes of the skirt fabric.
  • Start by joining one end of the waistband with the skirt using a pin and then joining the other end with the skirt. After that, attach the pin to the center of the waistband. Thread the pins around the edges of the fabric until the entire waistband is securely in place.

Step 5. Sew the waistband and skirt hem

Once the needle is done, start sewing to join the waistband with the circle skirt using a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch. Remove the pins one at a time when the fabric is sewn.

  • During machine sewing, you should tug a little on both sheets of fabric to make the seams neater.
  • When you're done sewing, fold the waistband inward when you put it on.

Part 3 of 3: Finishing the Skirt

Step 1. Fold the bottom edge of the skirt

Before hemming the bottom of the skirt, you must first fold it. Fold the entire edge of the fabric one cm wide. Use a pin to make sure the folds are the same size or you can hem as you sew.

  • You can baste to mark the hem. Run one cm from the edge of the fabric and use this basting as a guide as you fold and sew the hem. Fold it on the straight as if following the perforation line. After that, you can remove the basting thread or fold it again and sew it.
  • For a neater look, sew the ribbon on the inside of the bottom hem of the skirt. Fold the ribbon and sew again. With the ribbon, your skirt will be more beautiful and more fluffy.

Step 2. Sew the hem of the skirt

Sew the hem with a regular stitch. Make sure the hem is the same width as the entire skirt. To make it neater, you can baste first and then hem with regular stitches if you are satisfied with the result.

  • Hemming a skirt is usually a bit difficult because of its curvy shape. Be patient and take it slow.
  • You can iron the edges of the skirt before sewing to prevent the fabric from creasing.

Step 3. Trim the excess yarn and then put on your skirt

When you've finished hemming, cut out and remove any excess thread from the hem and waistband. Now, your skirt is ready to wear! You can wear a circle skirt in a number of ways. So, start experimenting.
