Tissue paper roses are very inexpensive to make yourself, but they can make beautiful handmade decorations. These flowers can be used to decorate anything, from the hall for a wedding reception, to decoration for gifts. You can make them look like roses in bloom or in buds and you can add stems underneath. These roses can be displayed individually or together in a bouquet.

Method 1 of 3: Making a Blooming Rose
Step 1. Prepare tissue paper
Choose a tissue paper color for the rose crown. You can use natural rose colors such as red, pink, white, orange, yellow, and lavender. However, you can also be creative and use other colors or even patterned paper. Black roses will look both elegant and unusual if you are making decorations for a Halloween party. When making a rose bloom, you can use several colors in one flower to make it look like a rainbow.
Step 2. Cut the tissue paper to make a flower crown
Use scissors and cut eight pieces of tissue paper of the same size to form a rounded crown. Don't make a perfect circle because the rose crown is not round. These strands can be made in a variety of sizes, but be aware that their diameter will be half the width of the finished rose.
Step 3. Make the tissue paper slightly curly and wrinkled
This will make the flower crown look more realistic. Stack the crowns on top of each other. Place the tip of the pencil on top of the tissue. Roll the tissue over the pencil and move the pencil up and down and left and right.
Step 4. Make roses that are still in bud
Separate a stack of tissues. Take the first strand and shape it into a cone. Wrap the second strand of the cone around the first, approximately 1 cm above the top of the cone. Repeat this step with the other 3 strands. For the last 3 strands, wrap only about a quarter of a paper towel and let the rest lie flat. The bottom crowns should encircle the entire rose.
Step 5. Tie the rose crown with wire
Cut a small diameter wire approximately 10 cm long. Tie at the bottom where the flower crowns are rolled together. Pinch the bottom crown over the wire to hide it.
Method 2 of 3: Making Rose Buds
Step 1. Choose tissue paper
You need to know, this flower is only made from one sheet of paper. So, you can't make colorful flowers like the rose blooms above, unless you use patterned tissue paper. Start with whatever paper size you have available. The standard size of craft tissue paper is about 50 cm².
Step 2. Squeeze the tissue paper
Squeeze the paper into a ball. A wrinkled texture will give the impression of a full rose. Be careful not to tear the paper.
Step 3. Trim the tissue paper back and cut it in half
If the paper is a rectangle, divide it in half on the long side. Each part can be made into a flower. Take one strand and divide it in half on the long side.
Step 4. Roll the paper into a rose shape
The folded part is placed on top. Take the bottom corner and roll the paper like a cinnamon roll. Slide the paper further down so that the center of the florets is slightly higher and the outside is gradually lowering.
Step 5. Tie the roses
Finish the rose roll by twisting the end of the paper tightly around the bottom of the flower. Tie a small diameter wire or green pipe cleaner around the base of the flower to hold the roll of paper in place. You can also gently poke some kind of small wooden skewer through the gap under the flower. This skewer serves as a support as well as flower stalks.
Method 3 of 3: Making the Stalk
Step 1. Measure and cut 80 cm thick wire
Make sure the ends of the wire are not jagged when cutting. The sharp tip could cut you and tear the tissue paper. You can use a shorter green pipe cleaner instead of thick wire.
Step 2. Fold the wire in thirds to make it thick enough as a flower stalk
Twist and thread the three wires together for a neater look. If you have trouble doing this by hand, use pliers. Wrap the wire with special green floral tape to cover it completely. If you are using a pipe cleaner, skip this step.
Step 3. Cut the leaves
Use green tissue paper. Cut four pieces of paper to form an oval and resemble a leaf blade for each flower. Leaves should be the same length as the diameter of the blooming crown or a quarter of the paper height in the budding flower.
Step 4. Roll out the leaf with a pencil
Roll the leaves at the base of the pencil as described in Step 3 Part 1. Leaves that are slightly curled will give a more realistic look. Focus the curves towards the tips of the leaves to mimic the main veins on the real leaves.
Step 5. Wrap a wire or pipe cleaner at the base of the flower
Roll it up tightly so the tissue paper doesn't stick out. Once the base of the flower is covered, twist the stalk loosely. Keep turning until it is 3 cm long.
Step 6. Add the leaves
Pinch the ends of the leaves and tie the flower stalks around them. Twist the stalk a few more times, then add a second leaf. Continue this pattern until the leaves are used up. Once all the leaves are in place, thread the wire or pipe cleaner loosely until the ends run out.
Tips
- Display real roses or pictures of them near you as a guide when making roses out of tissue paper for a realistic look.
- The special type of tissue paper you are using here is crepe paper. This is a tissue paper with a wrinkled texture and bright color variant that is commonly sold in bookstores, party supply stores, and in craft stores. You can buy crepe paper at the nearest store.
