Wood is quite susceptible to damage and holes. If you have holes in your walls or wooden furniture, you can fix them using an ice cream stick and wood putty. After filling the hole with wood putty, apply a primer and then paint to make the wood surface smooth and look new.
Step
Part 1 of 3: Preparing the Ice Cream Sticks and the Materials Needed
Step 1. Prepare the materials needed
Choose a putty, primer, and water-based wood paint if the wood you want to repair is indoors. If the wood is outdoors, choose an oil-based putty, primer, and wood paint. Also prepare ice cream sticks, disposable plates, PVA glue, wood glue, 120 sandpaper, and a paint brush.
Don't forget to prepare used clothes, rags, napkins, paint tape, and a paint stirrer
Step 2. Glue some ice cream sticks with glue
The ice cream stick serves to support the wood putty that is applied to the hole. Find out the size of the hole in the wood first, then determine how many ice cream sticks are needed to cover it.
- For example, if a hole in wood can be covered with 3 sticks of ice cream, lay 3 sticks of ice cream on a flat surface side by side. Apply glue to the surface of the 3 ice cream sticks. After that, glue 3 new ice cream sticks on top of the 3 ice cream sticks that have been glued before. This is done so that the thickness is sufficient and strong.
- The number of ice cream sticks needed will depend on how big the hole is in the wood.
- Let the glue dry for 10-15 minutes.
Step 3. Glue the ice cream sticks behind the wooden holes and glue them with wood glue
Apply wood glue around the edges of the wood hole. Stick the ice cream stick to the side of the wood that won't be visible. If you want to patch a hole in a cupboard, wall, or cabinet, stick an ice cream stick inside the hole.
If you want to seal a hole in the wall or a piece of wood that doesn't fit on a flat surface, you may need to hold the ice cream stick firmly for 5 minutes
Part 2 of 3: Applying Wood Putty
Step 1. Stir the wood putty using an ice cream stick on a disposable plate
Follow the instructions for use listed on the wood putty packaging. Instructions for use will vary depending on the brand of putty used. You don't need to mix a large amount of wood putty. Just stir a small amount of putty on a disposable plate.
- Make sure the room has good ventilation because the smell of wood putty is quite strong.
- If the color turns orange-brown, the putty can stop stirring.
Step 2. Apply putty to the ice cream stick to fill the hole
When you're done mixing the wood putty, apply it immediately. Apply putty using an ice cream stick or a paint knife to the ice cream stick that has been glued in the hole. Pre-glued ice cream sticks will serve as supports for the wood putty. The putty should be level and level with the wood surface.
Step 3. Allow the putty to dry for 1 hour before using 120 sandpaper
After the putty dries, smooth it with 120 sandpaper. Rub the sandpaper against the wood putty fairly vigorously. Continue to smooth the putty until it is completely flush with the wood surface.
If using machine sander, it is recommended to use 220 sandpaper. Machine sander is a tool that can sand hard wood
Step 4. Wipe off dust and dirt on the wood with a cloth
Wet the cloth in running water for a few seconds and then wipe the wood that was just patched up. The wood may have to be wiped down several times if it is large enough or a large amount of putty has been used.
It is important to wipe the wood with a cloth before varnishing the wood
Part 3 of 3: Applying Primer and Painting the Wood
Step 1. Place the protective mat on the floor or work area before starting
If you want to paint a wooden wall, place a protective mat on the floor so that dripping paint doesn't stain the floor. If you want to paint a cabinet or other wood furniture that can be moved, place it on a protective mat so that the area around you can be fully protected.
- Remove other furniture before starting to paint. If the size is too large, cover it with a protective mat.
- Protect siding, hinges, and other furniture with paint tape if necessary.
Step 2. Apply primer
The primer will make it easier for the paint to adhere to the wood surface. If you want to paint a wooden wall and have already prepared paint with the same color as the original color of the wall, you only need to apply a primer to the area that has just been patched with putty. If you want to paint an entire piece of wood, you'll need to apply a primer to all of it as well.
Use a paint roller to apply the primer to the wall. Use a paint brush to apply primer to a piece of wood that isn't too big
Step 3. Allow the primer to dry for 3 hours
The primer will dry after about 2 hours. However, if you apply paint to a primer that is still wet, the results will be less attractive. Let the primer dry for about 3 hours. By doing this, the primer will be completely dry and ready to paint.
Do not paint a primer that is still wet. Remember, the primer may feel dry to the touch even though it's not
Step 4. Apply the first coat of paint on the wood
After the primer dries, apply the first coat of paint using a paint brush or roller. Rollers should be used for painting walls or flat surfaces. Use a paint brush to paint the surface of other objects.
- If you only want to paint the putty, use a paint of the exact same color. If you can't find one, visit your nearest paint shop and get some color samples. Compare color samples to the wood in your home to find the right paint color.
- Don't be afraid if too much paint is used. Applying too much paint is much better than applying too little paint. Make sure the paint is applied evenly so that it covers the entire surface of the wood.
- Apply the paint evenly, like applying a primer.
Step 5. Allow the first coat of paint to dry for 2-3 hours
Allow the first coat of paint to dry completely. You may need to wait at least 2 hours. Use a tissue to check whether the paint is dry or not. After that, try to observe the tissue. If there is no paint on the tissue, the paint is dry and ready to be repainted.
It's best to let the paint dry overnight to allow it to dry completely
Step 6. Apply a second coat of paint
Once the first coat is dry, apply a second coat of paint evenly. When you have finished painting the second coat, observe the surface of the wood and determine whether or not you need to apply a third coat. If the color doesn't look right, you may need to apply a third coat of paint.
Step 7. Repeat the above process if necessary to apply a third coat of paint
Allow the previous coat of paint to dry for 2-3 hours before applying the next coat of paint.
