Gutters and vertical gutters are designed to divert and carry rainwater away from the foundation of your home, which helps to maintain the integrity of the construction. Gutters help prevent soil erosion, wall damage, and basement leaks. It is very important that rain gutters and vertical gutters are properly measured, adjusted and installed in order to function properly. Gutter installation is a job that many homeowners can tackle on their own with a little effort and the right tools. Read the article below for instructions on how to install rain gutters.
Step
Step 1. Calculate and purchase at least the required total length of gutters and the correct number of vertical lengths of pipe along with additional fasteners
Rain gutters should be installed on a shower-wide plank along the roof, and terminate in a vertical gutter pipe. If the gutter is more than 12.2 meters, the gutter must be placed for adjustment from the middle, towards the vertical gutter pipe at each end. A shower-wide board tie is attached at each end of the rib, or approximately every 81.3 cm.
Step 2. Measure and capture the layout lines using the chalk line
- Determine the starting point, or the highest point of the gutter line.
- Mark a point on the shower-wide board, 3.2 cm below the joint between the wall and the roof tile.
- Find the end point, or location of the gutter line vertical gutter.
- Mark the bottom end point of the shower board-width when calculating the slope of the 0.6 cm gutter for every 3 m of length.
- Use a line marker between the two points.
Step 3. Cut the gutters to size
Use a hacksaw or large metal cutting hand shears to cut the chamfer to the proper size.
Step 4. Install the gutter fastener
The binder can be installed on the gutter or simply attached to the surface board first, depending on the type of gutter you purchased. Review the manufacturer's recommendations regarding your gutter type.
Step 5. Mark the location of the vertical gutter pipe opening on the gutter
Use a jigsaw to cut a rectangular opening at the correct place in the gutter.
Step 6. Attach the vertical gutter pipe joint and cover plug to the gutter using silicone sealant and short metal screws
Closing plugs must be used on gutter lines that are open at the ends.
Step 7. Glue the chamfer
Adhesive should be applied to the surface board every 61 cm. Use large stainless steel screw bolts that are long enough to penetrate a surface board of at least 5.1 cm.
Step 8. Attach the vertical gutter pipe to the gutter through the vertical gutter pipe connection
Make sure that the tapered end of the vertical gutter is facing down and is pointing in the right direction.
Step 9. Secure the gutter joint crease using heavy bead seal and let it dry overnight
Tips
- Test newly installed gutters for leaks and properly divert water using the hose at the highest point.
- Install a leaf filter to prevent gutter clogging if your house is located in a densely treed area.
- Repair shower-wide board rot and roof edge damage prior to gutter installation.
