After dyeing your hair, you may be concerned about it fading, especially if you opt for bright shades or a rainbow effect. Luckily, you just need to follow a few easy steps to keep your hair bright and shiny for as long as possible.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Dye-Safe Products
Step 1. Choose a color-protecting shampoo and conditioner
In this case, any previous shampoo and conditioner will not work. Look for products specially formulated for color-treated hair. These products are gentler and free from harsh chemicals that can fade colors. If you object to this option, ask your hair stylist for advice.
Avoid using clarifying shampoos, which can quickly strip your hair of color
Step 2. Use a dye-safe dry shampoo in between washes
Since you won't be washing your hair as often as you used to, you can use a dry shampoo to absorb the oil, add texture, and keep your hair looking fresh and smelling good. Spray dry shampoo at a distance of about 15 cm from the hair, focusing on the roots. Massage your scalp to rub it in and comb your hair to distribute the product.
Step 3. Make sure the hair products you use are free of sulfates and alcohol
When choosing a shampoo, conditioner, heat protectant, gel, mousse, hair spray or other product, read the product ingredient list carefully. Sulfates and alcohol strip color and dry out hair, so avoid anything containing these harsh chemicals. Also, avoid anything that contains salt or detergent as they can fade the color of your hair.
- Look for products that contain natural oils, such as coconut or jojoba oil, and gentle cleansers like sodium myreth or tricedeth.
- Check the ingredients list to ensure that the product does not contain sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, or ammonium laureth sulfate.
Step 4. Use a deep conditioner once a week
To keep hair healthy and shiny, do deep conditioning regularly. Choose a deep-conditioner formulated for color-treated hair, such as one that contains aloe vera, argan oil, and panthenol. Apply deep conditioner in the shower, after washing your hair, by coating each strand from the top of the hair roots to the tips. Leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.
If you want, you can wear a shower cap to allow the heat from the scalp to support the results
Step 5. Apply a heat protectant before using a blow dryer or straightener
Heat protection products are important for maintaining hair color. Look for products formulated for your hair type or ask your stylist for recommendations. Make sure to wear it every time you use a hot styling tool. Allow the product to dry completely before using a straightener or curling iron on your hair.
Method 2 of 3: Cleaning Hair and Using Conditioner
Step 1. Wait for at least 24 hours to wash your hair after coloring it
It's important to give your hair time to absorb the dye into its cuticles. After the first wash to remove excess dye, you should wait 24-72 hours before washing your hair again. Washing your hair too quickly can result in a dull, faded color.
Step 2. Wash your hair at most every two days
Washing too often can fade hair color faster than anything else. Hair should only be washed 2-3 times a week and no more than twice a day. You can still use the shower, just keep your hair dry by wearing a shower cap, or give your hair a quick rinse to remove excess oil.
Step 3. Add a little dye to the conditioner
If your hair is only 1 shade, you can maintain the color by adding a little dye to the conditioner. Keep some of the dye out of the box, or ask your stylist to leave a little dye to add to the conditioner. Mix or shake the conditioner container thoroughly to distribute the dye. Use it every time you shower to lighten your hair color while moisturizing each strand.
Step 4. Apply conditioner to your hair after washing it
Choose a conditioner that is rich in moisture and contains oils such as obliphica, coconut, or jojoba. Coat each strand of hair thoroughly with conditioner every time you wash your hair, starting from the middle to the ends. Avoid applying conditioner to your scalp or hair roots as it can make your hair look greasy.
Conditioner can even be used when you shower but don't use shampoo to keep it strong and soft
Step 5. Rinse hair using cold water
Hot water opens the cuticles and allows the hair color to wear off. On the other hand, cold water closes the cuticle and keeps the hair color in it. Always rinse your hair with cold water to maintain its color and brightness.
Method 3 of 3: Nourishing Hair
Step 1. Dry your hair gently with a microfiber towel or T-shirt
Avoid rubbing and rubbing the hair with a regular towel, this can cause the color to fade and the structure to weaken. Instead, use a microfiber towel or a soft t-shirt to dry your hair. Squeeze out excess water slowly; do not squeeze or twist hair.
Step 2. Limit the use of hot styling tools
Heat is another factor that can make hair color fade quickly. To keep the color from fading, reduce the use of blow dryers, curlers, and straighteners. Instead, let your hair dry naturally and try hairstyles that don't require heat, such as braids and beach waves. You can also curl your hair with rollers or straighten it using a hair mask.
Step 3. Wear a hat or scarf to protect your hair from the sun
Sunlight can quickly fade hair color, turning it from bright to dull. If you plan to be outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat or cover your hair with a scarf. Choose a few different hat styles or scarf colors or patterns so you have supplies to match your fashion style or mood.
Also, use an ultraviolet-protective spray to prevent the sun's rays from damaging your hair
Step 4. Avoid swimming in chlorinated water
Chlorine is a harsh chemical that can strip hair color. To keep hair bright and shiny, avoid swimming pools or wear a swim cap to preserve the color. If you don't want to wear a swim cap while swimming, wet your hair with fresh water and apply a leave-in conditioner before dipping into the pool.
