If you have old pants that you don't wear anymore, get ready to enter the world of fashion creation to turn pants into skirts! All you need are scissors to cut fabric, a needle and thread, fabric, and a few hours to create a new collection of clothes in your wardrobe.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Using Horizontal Hems
Step 1. Take the pants you no longer use
The size must match or be larger than yours. If you don't have the right pants, just go to a cheap shirt shop! Jeans, khakis, chinos, slacks – all types of pants can be used.
If the pants are too big, you will need to cut the side creases, cut the oversized fabric and sew it back to the waistline and dna
Step 2. Cut the trouser leg at the crotch
Make sure the pants are flat when cut; no lumps – they should lie flat on the table.
- If your cut isn't perfectly straight, that's okay! As long as the cut is neat, it doesn't matter what angle it is. In fact, the sharper the corners of your skirt, the smoother it will look, not as much of a makeover.
- If you want to use the legs to be joined into a skirt (now the skirt is still too short), don't throw it away!
Step 3. Cut another piece of fabric to lengthen the skirt
You may need a fabric that is about 15 cm or more wide. If you have more fabric left over from old stitches, use it! Or you can use the leg of the pants you just cut. Is the thigh or calf the width you want it to be?
- Cut the fabric 1.25 cm wider than you need for the hem.
- Make sure the fabric is long enough to fit around the skirt.
- If you're using your old jeans, you may need to open the hem to sew on the skirt – otherwise there won't be too many stray threads in one place. And since it's a jeans cut, make sure the fabric is parallel to the width, front and back.
Step 4. Pin the fabric on the edge of the skirt with a pin then sew
Using a 1.25 cm hem, pin the fabric to the edge of the skirt with a pin, fold the rest of the fabric so that it is inside the hem, so that after sewing it is not visible. Turn the skirt inside out, and start sewing by hand or sewing machine.
- If the type of fabric you need requires a hem, sew a hem at the base of the skirt as well. But don't let the skirt be too short!
- If your fabric is difficult to work with, iron it flat. After ironing the fabric will be easier to work with.
Step 5. Add a finishing touch of style
Your skirt is done! But if you want to make it more "personal," add ruffles or lace, fabric paint, or some other fabric on the side. And you can still use dye, glitter, ironing added embellishments, adding ink, and printing!
Method 2 of 3: Using "V" Hems
Step 1. Take any size pants
If it's bigger than your size, you'll need to trim the edges and sew it back to your size, and it works! And any fabric can also be used. Jeans, casual pants, khakis – all good to go.
Step 2. Measure to your desired length and cut
Remember to leave 5 cm for the hem or your skirt will be shorter than you want. Leave the cut section (i.e. the leg) – which will be between the "legs" of your skirt, filling in the middle.
Step 3. Open the seam from the edge of the foot to the crotch
Open the circumference to 0.6 cm below the crotch on both sides. You'll need an unstitching tool to do this step. This will take a lot of time, so just put on your pajamas and sit in front of the TV to work more comfortably.
This is the most boring part. After this all the steps are more fun
Step 4. Fold the bottom edge and attach the pins
All those visible seams must all be removed! Fold inward (approximately 1.25 cm wide) and pin inward. Do this step on both sides, around the pants. You should get a clean "V" line on both sides, even and balanced on both sides.
Step 5. Iron
Don't miss this step! This step may seem unimportant, but the fabric will be much easier to work with when it's flat and all the creases are gone. You'll also be able to see if the lines are straight and the angles are where you want them to be.
Step 6. Take the pant leg that has been cut
Flip the skirt inside out and pin the pant legs around, covering the "V." Scissors until the trouser leg covers the entire opening, pinning the pin so it doesn't change its position.
You'll need to do this on both sides, unless you want a big slit (note: totally inappropriate) on the back (or front!) of your skirt
Step 7. Flip the front out and sew around the edges, starting at the bottom
Sew up to both sides as close as possible to the edges of the fabric meeting. This step can be done by hand, but it is easier to do with a sewing machine.
Step 8. Sew the hem of the skirt then iron it
Since you've made a new cut at the base of your skirt (now the pants are a skirt!), you'll need to trim the cut to make it look pretty. Use 1.25 cm of the edge of the fabric and fold it in, forming a hem. Iron and sew (again, as close to the edges as possible), creating a straight, neat seam line.
Step 9. Trim excess fabric and iron again as a final step
You may still have extra fabric on the inside of the hem that can be cut. After that, take the iron, and iron again as a final step. Simsalabim! It may not turn water into wine but it's pretty cool!
Method 3 of 3: Making a Pencil Skirt
Step 1. Take the pants
If it's the right size, make sure it falls exactly where you want it – that is, for a pencil skirt, around your natural waist. If they fall on your hips, you need to find other pants that are much bigger. The bigger the pants, the easier it is to turn them into a high-waisted skirt.
Pants of any material can be used, other than denim! If your mom has '80s pants, wear them
Step 2. Cut the seams up and down
If the pants are larger than your size, you will need to open the inner and outer seams. If the pants are the right size, you only need to cut the inside of the seam (along the inside of your trouser leg).
Cut the crotch too, so that it falls flat. If you don't cut it, you'll end up with weird mounds of fabric worn when the pants have become skirts. This section is cut so that the fabric is not squiggly anymore
Step 3. Fold in half (at the crotch) and sew straight down in the middle
More fabric at the crotch? The one that comes out in a V? We're not going to use it. You will need to use two long fabrics from the leg of the pants. Cut both legs starting from the widest part near the crotch and cut straight down,.
If you buy pants that are much larger than your body and you work two half pants, you will need to do these steps twice
Step 4. Pin the legs together with a pin and sew with a trail stitch
At the bottom of the straight line you just cut, pin the legs together with pins to match the fabric for your skirt. Pin the pin about 2.5 cm from the edge, leaving room to sew the trail stitch. You can cut more material (length) if you want, or you can sew the whole thing and then adjust the length later. But if you want a slit, don't sew it all the way to the end!
- Your stab stab should be as close to the edge as possible – you can follow any existing crease lines. You can sew by hand or with a sewing machine, whichever works best.
- Again, if you're doing two halves, do this step twice.
Step 5. Flip the skirt from the inside out
Or if you're working with two different pieces (after sewing each one separately), place the top on top of the bottom, the inner side of the fabric facing out.
- If the skirt size is larger than your body, take a skirt that is the right size and place it on top of the skirt you are working on. Then, cut the skirt-pants to the sample sizes, adding 2.5 cm on each side for the hem. If you're not a good seamstress, go 5 cm more – it's easier to make it smaller and not so easy to make it bigger!
- If the skirt fits your body size, you're ready to sew these skirt-pants hem!
Step 6. Pin both sides with pins then sew each side need to be pinned well (top and bottom on both sides) to make sewing easier and to make sure the line is straight
If you are using denim fabric, make sure you use denim thread. You don't have denim thread? Use cotton thread and sew twice.
- Again, if you are using denim, sew very slowly. You may also need to tug on the fabric a little so that it is tight and straight.
- Then try it on! You can adjust the length once you see how the skirt fits your body.
Step 7. Cut to your desired length and sew the fringe you want
After you try on a skirt, decide what length the skirt you use. Mark it by pinning the pins, and opening the skirt, and you're almost done! Cut to the desired length, trim the fringe as desired, and the skirt is done!
You have two main options here: you can sew the hem, creating a clean skirt edge, or you can cut and fray, adjusting the ruffled look. If you choose to hem it, fold the fabric 1 inch (2.5 cm) in and sew along the edge of the skirt. Do the same thing on the slit if there is one
Tips
- This is a great gift for someone close to you! Wear your pants if they suit this person, or buy cheap, size-fitting pants at a thrift store and turn them into brands!
- Sewing ruffles at the base of the skirt is a pretty idea for a pretty base that looks feminine!
- Use creativity! Look for cool fabrics in various patterns and colors!
- Satisfy your taste buds using the materials you love! Apply glitter, decorate with fabric paint, and have fun!
