Although beautiful to look at, bird nests are quite disturbing if built in the wrong place. Bird nests built into vents, roofs, or gutters are extremely dangerous. If you want to repel and eliminate bird nests near your home, there are several ways to do it. You can place barriers, use non-toxic exterminators, or put up fake predators to scare birds away.
Step
Method 1 of 3: Placing Barriers
Step 1. Use porcupine wire to keep birds from perching on the house rafters
This wire will make the bird's perch uneven, making it difficult for birds to build nests there. Place stainless steel needle wire on the rafters of the house you want to keep away from bird nests.
This wire has branches sticking out in all directions, and can be purchased online or at a hardware store
Step 2. Place the wire fence in the area you want to keep away from the bird's nest
If there is a garden or item you want to protect from bird nests, cover it with a wire fence. As long as the fence is in place, birds and other small animals cannot enter the area.
Plug the wire into the ground with a post to keep the fence from collapsing
Step 3. Use a cover to keep birds from nesting in the vent
Purchase a vent cover or wire mesh from your nearest hardware store and place it in the vent facing out. This will prevent birds from nesting in the vent.
Step 4. Use a wooden plank to cover the ledge
Place the plank at an angle of more than 45 degrees over the ledge you want to keep the bird's nest away. Birds will not be able to perch on ledges covered in wooden planks and will nest elsewhere.
Method 2 of 3: Scare the Birds
Step 1. Place the fake plastic predator in the area you want to protect from bird nests
Birds generally stay away from predators and avoid nesting in unsafe places. Place some fake predators like owls, snakes, or foxes in the area you want to get rid of the bird's nest. When the bird sees the fake predator, it will nest elsewhere.
Step 2. Create a temporary fake predator using balloons
Draw a circle in the middle of the two balloons, then tie the two balloons together. Both balloons will look like scarecrows that have a pair of predatory eyes. When they see a scarecrow, birds will think that the area is not safe.
Step 3. Play the recorded predator sound to scare the birds
Sound recordings of predators or birds suffering can frighten birds around your home. Birds will think that your home is not a safe place. Therefore, place a loudspeaker in the yard of the house and play the recorded sound so that birds do not nest.
- If you don't want to play recorded predators, the sound of wind chimes can also keep birds away.
- Before playing a recorded voice over a loudspeaker, tell your neighbors first.
Step 4. Hang a few pieces of sparkling ribbon or other light-reflecting object
You can confuse birds and prevent them from nesting in your home by placing a few pieces of shiny ribbon around your house, plants, or other objects. If you don't have a shiny ribbon, you can hang other shiny items like CDs, spoons, or forks.
- Mirrors are a good alternative.
- Aluminum pans can also be used as an alternative. The pan will make a noise when blown by the wind.
Method 3 of 3: Using Bird Slayer
Step 1. Purchase a non-toxic bird repellent that is certified by BPOM
In some areas, it is illegal to kill birds using poison. It's best to buy non-toxic bird repellent on the internet or at your local store. Commercial bird repellents can prevent birds from nesting in certain areas without hurting or killing them.
Step 2. Use a sticky bird repellent on the area you want to keep away from the bird's nest
This repellent makes the area sticky and uncomfortable for birds. Apply this bird repellent to plants, balustrades, gutters, roofs, or other areas you want to keep birds away from.
Make sure the exterminator used is BPOM certified. Sticky exterminators that are not BPOM certified can injure or kill birds
Step 3. Spray a lubricant on the roof of the house to prevent birds from perching because it is too slippery
Some lubricants are specially designed to coat an area with a flat, slippery layer that makes it difficult for birds to perch on it. Contact construction workers to find out what lubricants are suitable to use to prevent birds from perching or nesting on your roof.
Step 4. Do not use bird repellent that contains chili
Some people believe that birds can be exterminated by spraying a liquid containing chili peppers on certain areas. However, this repellent will not be effective because birds cannot taste spicy food. Do not use an exterminator that is believed to be able to kill birds with chili content in it.
An exterminator containing chili can kill insects
Warning
- In some areas, it is against the law to disturb a bird's nest. Do not follow this article's guidelines for keeping birds away from the nest that has been built.
- Remember, poisonous bird repellent should not be used in most areas.
