Step 12. Design your survey
After creating an account, it's time to get to work. Organize effective surveys to find the data you need. That is, you must know in advance what data is needed. Creating a survey without a clear goal will only make it difficult for you and the respondent. In addition, respondents may feel lazy to answer or consider your survey as spam if you include questions at random. To design survey content, keep the following in mind:
- When creating a survey, include relevant questions. Do not try to include questions that deviate from the topic of the survey, as they may surprise the respondent. In effect, their answers will be less "legitimate".
- Creating anonymous surveys is one way to get respondents to answer to their heart's content. Provide the option to hide names, unless you really need the information. If you collect respondent names, always explain how you will protect the data (eg by presenting results in an aggregated manner so that respondents will not be personally identified). If you feel that people don't want to mention their names while you need that data too, offer incentives. For example, offer digital books for respondents who are willing to be contacted again.
- Effective survey questions are generally short, relevant, and free of jargon. Avoid questions that are based on assumptions and "lead" the respondent to a specific answer.
- Put sensitive or demographic-related information at the end of the survey because respondents will generally feel reluctant to answer the question if the question is asked at the beginning. Don't forget to ask interesting questions at the beginning of the survey.
- Resist the urge to fill the survey page. Use spaces, and only ask one question per line.
- Test the survey before submitting it so you can find errors or anything else you don't want. To explore responses, ask some friends or family to fill out your survey.
Tips
- When selecting a survey template, you can preview the template by clicking the "Preview" button in the right corner of the screen.
- Make sure you release the survey at the right time. During the holidays or towards the end of the year, people may not have time to fill out your survey.
- Consider your relationship with potential respondents. Instead, choose respondents you know (such as friends or fans on Facebook, or classmates). Try to find things in common between you and potential respondents so that your survey "hit" the respondents more.
- Include a reminder to complete the survey. However, don't overdo the reminder. Just one or two reminders will suffice.
Warning
- SurveyMonkey is not the only way to create surveys for free. You can create free surveys with the Google Docs form builder.
- Not all SurveyMonkey features are available if you have a free account. You can upgrade to a Select, Gold or Platinum account to access additional features.
- Don't spam invites. Also avoid words that lead to spam, and don't send surveys to people you don't know. Set up a professional reply address.
