Are you no longer using Dropbox on your Mac computer? Want to delete it? Follow the steps in this article to make sure the program is completely uninstalled.
Step
Part 1 of 4: Removing the Dropbox Program and Folder
Step 1. Look for Dropbox on the Mac menu bar
Click the Dropbox icon on the menu bar.
Step 2. Close Dropbox
Click the gear icon and select Quit Dropbox.
Step 3. Locate Dropbox in the “Applications” folder
Remove options by right-clicking the icon and selecting Move to Trash, or dragging the icon to the trash (“Trash”).
Step 4. Locate the “Dropbox” folder to delete if you want
Right-click the folder and select Move to Trash, or drag the folder to the trash.
Keep in mind that deleting a folder will also delete its contents. If the files are not already stored in the Dropbox storage space on the internet, you will need to copy them to a safe folder first before the “Dropbox” folder is deleted
Step 5. Remove Dropbox from the sidebar if necessary
If you want to remove Dropbox from the sidebar, right-click the Dropbox name and select Remove from Sidebar.
Part 2 of 4: Removing Dropbox Contextual Menu
Step 1. Open Finder
Click Go and select Go to Folder, or use the keyboard shortcut Shift+⌘ Cmd+G.
Step 2. Type in /Library and hit the Go button
Step 3. Delete the “DropboxHelperTools” file by moving it to the trash (“Trash”)
After that, the Dropbox contextual menu will be removed from the system (if you previously installed it).
Part 3 of 4: Uninstalling Dropbox App Settings
Step 1. Open Finder
Click Go and select Go to Folder, or use the keyboard shortcut Shift+⌘ Cmd+G.
Step 2. Enter the Dropbox directory
Type in ~/.dropbox and hit the Go button.
Step 3. Select all the contents in the “/.dropbox” folder and move it to the trash or “Trash”
After that, the Dropbox app settings will be deleted.
Part 4 of 4: Removing Dropbox from the Finder Toolbar
Step 1. Open Finder
Click View and select Customize Toolbar.
Step 2. Look for the Dropbox icon on the currently active toolbar
Step 3. Click and hold the Dropbox icon
Drag the icon into the customization area and release it until it disappears. Click Done afterwards.
Tips
- The methods above may not be able to remove the app, and instead get rid of other content. You may also get a warning under Dropbox “add-ons” are still in use. In a situation like this, you need to access the directory or extension. To access it, click the Dropbox app icon and click the spacebar to view it. After that, click on the arrow that comes out of the icon. You can see several options after that. Click " more… ", then search for Dropbox from the extension box and uncheck the option. Now, you can completely uninstall the program.
- By deleting Dropbox from your computer, your account will no longer sync with the files on your computer.
- Deleting Dropbox on your computer will not delete your account or automatically delete files from your hard drive (unless you delete them manually as described above).
